As a predominantly Muslim country, Indonesia is home to a diverse range of local cultures. Islam, which originated outside of Indonesia, brought with it not only religious doctrines but also cultural influences. The interaction between Islam— as the majority religion— and the unique cultural identity of Indonesia is a central theme of the journal. The journal focuses on exploring the dynamics between Islam and Indonesian identity, examining how the two intersect and influence each other. Scope The dynamics between Islam and Indonesian identity enable a diverse range of scientific studies. Therefore, the scope of Jurnal Penelitian includes issues related to: - The relationship between Islam and local culture in Indonesia, - Islamic movements vis-a-vis the state in Indonesia, - Mainstreaming religious moderation in Indonesia, - Islamic education and appreciation of local culture in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the innovation of digital-based Arabic learning models, particularly regarding Human Resource (HR) innovations and the utilization of digital facilities at three Islamic Higher Education (Perguruan Tinggi Keagamaan Islam/PTKI) Institutions in Southeast Sulawesi. This qualitative research employs a phenomenological approach, with data collected from primary and secondary sources through observation, interviews, Focus Group Discussions (FGD), and document studies. The data was analyzed using categorization, description, and synthesis techniques, with data validity tested through triangulation. The findings of this article indicate that the State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Kendari, the Islamic College (STAI) YPIQ Baubau, and the Islamic Institute (IAI) Al-Mawaddah Warahmah Kolaka have implemented innovations in digital-based Arabic learning models. The creativity of human resources (lecturers, students, and administrative staff) shows different adaptation styles in utilizing digital facilities. These innovations have facilitated Arabic language learning but have not been fully supported by the digital competence of human resources at these three institutions. In terms of digital facilities meeting standard requirements, the three Islamic Higher Education Institutions exhibit varying levels of innovation in digital-based Arabic learning models, especially in operational digital formats, HR competence readiness, and availability of facilities. The digital-based Arabic learning model innovations at these institutions offer advantages, compatibility, and religious complexity. These innovations are implemented with a commitment to enhancing HR creativity and providing representative digital facilities based on needs.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the hegemony of religious leaders (Ulama) in contemporary politics and how Ulama exercise their hegemonic roles in the political process in Central Java. Data was obtained through primary and secondary sources, with primary data collected through field research using interviews, and secondary data gathered through literature research. The findings indicate that the entanglement between Ulama and politics is caused by two factors: political oligarchy within political parties and the political hegemony of Ulama. The political hegemony of Ulama in the political constellation of Central Java makes them highly influential in political affairs. However, from the perspective of real political dimensions in Central Java, Ulama have yet to secure strategic positions in either the executive or legislative branches.

Abstract

This study aims to elucidate the role of the state as the primary actor in managing the extensive use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the realm of da’wah (calling others to practice the teachings of Islam), which has both positive and negative consequences. The identified negative impacts include the delegitimization of religious teachings and the authority of religious figures. This research utilizes a literature review approach, collecting and analyzing data from various sources such as books, websites, articles, and newspapers related to the application of AI in da’wah. The findings indicate that state intervention is crucial in regulating AI use through three main mechanisms: first, regulation; second, strengthening the roles of relevant actors; and third, supervision. Without proper regulation, the use of AI in da’wah can become unmanageable, leading to disinformation and the erosion of authoritative references. Therefore, this study underscores the importance of state involvement in ensuring that AI is employed ethically and effectively to support da’wah activities in Indonesia. These findings affirm that the state must actively regulate AI to maintain the integrity of religious teachings and the authority of religious figures, as well as to fully harness the positive potential of AI in the context of da’wah.

Abstract

This research examines the complexity of Rohingya refugee integration in Aceh using a qualitative approach and the social religious phenomenology method. The main focus is on the interaction between international law, local norms, religion, mass media, and the social dynamics that influence refugee reception and integration. Data collection methods include in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis, with informants comprising religious leaders, local government officials, Rohingya refugees, and local journalists. Thematic and narrative analyses are employed to identify and interpret relevant themes related to the application of the non-refoulement principle, the role of Islam, the influence of mass media, and the psychological well-being of refugees. The findings reveal the complexity of Rohingya refugee integration in Aceh, shaped by the interplay of international law, local norms, religion, mass media, and social dynamics. Legal pluralism theory highlights a gap between the non-refoulement principle and Aceh's local wisdom. Religious solidarity theory explains the initial drive for refugee acceptance, though collective historical experiences contribute to resistance. Agenda-setting theory uncovers media bias. The study’s limitations suggest the need for further research, particularly through a comparative approach to understand effective strategies for integrating international law with local norms.

Abstract

Various efforts have been made by the leadership of Islamic Higher Education institutions to prevent the infiltration of radical ideologies on their campuses. These efforts range from internalizing religious moderation to monitoring deviant student organizations, both of which have been intensively pursued by institutional leaders. However, since the declaration of these initiatives, there has been no empirical evaluation to assess whether students in Islamic Higher Education, particularly in Papua and West Papua, have a proper understanding of the concept of moderate Islam. This gap could hinder policymakers' ability to effectively combat the spread of radical ideas. This study employs a mixed-method approach, surveying 1,309 students from three Islamic Higher Education institutions in West Papua: IAIN Sorong, STIT Yapis Manokwari, and STAI Al Mahdi Fakfak. The quantitative component consists of surveys designed to evaluate key indicators of religious moderation, including tolerance, anti-violence attitudes, and national commitment—critical factors that influence pro-violent extremism views in Islamic Higher Education. Additionally, qualitative studies were conducted through focus group discussions with selected key informants to gain deeper insight into the students' understanding, actions, and efforts to build moderation capacity. The study’s findings revealed that, although students' knowledge of religious moderation is relatively high, the factors of tolerance and anti-violence attitudes are strong predictors of pro-violent extremism. Therefore, it is essential to strengthen the role of "moderation houses" from an institutional perspective, and integrated programs must serve as the foundation for building religious moderation capacity, particularly for students in Islamic Higher Education.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between religious literacy and scientific attitudes to the learning outcomes of Islamic religious education in Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri 13 Kota Jambi. This study uses a quantitative research method. The population in this study was 179 students, and we used purposive sampling techniques to select a research sample from 124. Data collection techniques include tests, questionnaires, and documentation. The findings of the study showed that: 1) The relationship of religious literacy to the learning outcomes of Islamic Religious Education obtained a value of 0.404 > 0.05, meaning that there was no significant relationship between the religious literacy variable and the Islamic Religious Education learning outcome variable; 2) The relationship of scientific attitudes on the learning outcomes of Islamic Religious Education obtained a Sig. Value of 0.914 > 0.05, meaning that there was no significant relationship between the variables of scientific attitudes and the variables of Islamic Religious Education learning outcomes; 3) Religious literacy and scientific attitude simultaneously obtained a Sig. F change value of 0.667 > 0.05, meaning that it did not have a significant relationship to the learning outcomes of Islamic Religious Education. Furthermore, this study does not address the other variables that account for the remaining 99.3% of the simultaneous relationship, resulting in a confidence level of 0.7%.

Abstract

This research explores the Islamic paradigm of spiritual health assessment, particularly its divergence from Christian traditions in measuring religiosity. While spiritual health is often equated with religious well-being, especially among Muslim scholars, assessing religiosity may violate on privacy, induce insecurity, and contradict Islamic jurisprudential principles. This research aims to clarify whether Islamic doctrine permits the evaluation of religiosity and the collection of spiritual histories through confession or inquiry. Employing a mixed-methods approach based on Creswell’s sequential explanatory model and the Sound Heart Theory, this research integrates qualitative content analysis with quantitative data from clinical implementation. Validity is ensured through triangulation and expert review in spiritual health scholarship. The findings indicate that Islam prohibits the investigation of hidden beliefs, confessions of sin, and intrusive questioning, as such practices violate human dignity and privacy. In contrast to Catholic traditions, Islamic jurisprudence prioritizes the protection of spiritual secrecy and discourages external measurements of faith. The research concludes that spiritual health providers should adopt culturally grounded, non-invasive strategies, avoiding religiosity metrics and instead promoting family-centered spiritual self-care education. These findings advocate for paradigm-sensitive approaches in spiritual care across diverse religious contexts and underscore the necessity of aligning assessment models with theological principles and sociocultural norms.

Abstract

This research examines the political dimensions of religious conversion among Indigenous Peoples in Indonesia, focusing on the experiences of the Baduy in Banten, the Akur Sunda Wiwitan in West Java, and the Suku Anak Dalam in Jambi. It aims to understand how political structures—particularly state policies and identity politics—drive religious conversion, often under the pretext of social inclusion. While conventional studies on conversion emphasize psychological or sociocultural factors, this research situates conversion within the broader framework of political hegemony and state control over officially recognized religions. Employing a qualitative methodology, this research draws on fieldwork, in-depth interviews, and documentary analysis, integrating anthropological, sociological, and political science approaches. The findings indicate that religious conversion among Indigenous groups is often not spiritually motivated but rather a strategic response to institutional discrimination, legal exclusion, and the pursuit of citizenship rights. This highlights the crucial role of state power in shaping religious identities and marginalizing traditional belief systems. By foregrounding the non-Western realities of political coercion and exclusion, this research contributes to the decolonization of conversion studies. It calls for policy reforms that uphold religious freedom and protect Indigenous religious identities within a pluralistic and democratic framework.

Abstract

Preventing radicalism among youth is a crucial challenge in the modern era, particularly in major cities like Medan, which have a high level of religious diversity. This research is essential due to the potential conflicts that may trigger social instability. The aim of this study is to explore strategies that can be implemented to educate and equip adolescents with religious moderation literacy, considering the rising tendency of radicalism that could disrupt social stability. The methodology used is qualitative, employing a phenomenological approach, which includes in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and document collection. Data were gathered from students and young people in Medan to understand their perspectives on religious moderation. The findings of the study suggest that religious moderation literacy can be fostered through several means, such as youth involvement in the creation of digital content, interfaith mentorship programs, and the establishment of interfaith youth networks. Community-based training and the utilization of social media as a tool for disseminating information also play a significant role in shaping moderate attitudes. These findings indicate that enhancing moderate religious literacy can reduce the potential for radicalization among youth, while simultaneously fostering a better climate of tolerance within society.

Abstract

The neo-Salafi movement Wahdah Islamiyah plays a significant role in shaping the religious identity of the urban Muslim middle class in South Sulawesi and Gorontalo. This research aims to review how Wahdah Islamiyah influences urban Muslim communities, leading to a high interest in religious studies and community education organized by this religious organization. The research method used is field research. This method was chosen because the researcher intends to gain clarity on a local and current event under study. This research concludes that Wahdah Islamiyah successfully manages its organization (framing) as a social movement to enhance its appeal to the public. Wahdah Islamiyah bridges or mediates the views between conservative-traditionalist Salafis and a more modern, open organizational management concept similar to Muhammadiyah. Wahdah Islamiyah adopts an organizational development concept through modern education by establishing Islamic schools, universities, social care institutions, and philanthropic organizations. The success of Wahdah Islamiyah’s framing gives the impression of an Islamic organization relatively open to modernity, yet still rooted in puritanical Islamic values like the Salafis, especially regarding fundamental religious issues such as aqidah (creed) and sharia (Islamic law). This religious model has proven to attract the Muslim middle class in South Sulawesi and Gorontalo.
