Abstract

This paper aims to capture the resistance of the marginalized Sunda Wiwitan community against the hegemony of the majority religion, in order to survive. In collecting data, this study uses literature from previous research, as well as direct observations and interviews with key figures from the Sunda Wiwitan community. The analysis is based on the theory of New Social Movements, which has been widely discussed by scholars. The study concludes that throughout the three leadership periods of Sunda Wiwitan, all have faced discrimination. This discrimination comes from the state bureaucracy, such as the existence of laws against religious blasphemy, regulations for accepting a religion, unregistered marriages, and more. Discrimination also comes from society, particularly from the orthodox Islamic community, especially from the Darul Islam/Islamic State (DI)/Indonesian Islamic Army (TII) groups (hereafter abbreviated as DI/TII), bullying, and negative stigma with labels such as infidels, heretics, uncircumcised, etc. The difficulties faced by Sunda Wiwitan in finding employment and their limited opportunities for societal development have led them to engage in social movements for survival. These social movements involve reorganizing, reviving the Seren Taun harvest festival, and reconstructing their identity. Based on Erikson's classification, the strategy employed by Sunda Wiwitan is a combination of voice and loyalty. Although their existence is not officially recognized by the state (especially before the Constitutional Court's decision regarding the identity column in ID cards), Sunda Wiwitan does not engage in a frontal movement to separate from the state, but instead creates a strategy of loyalty to the state, while still striving to voice their aspirations.

Abstract

Kenduri , a form of slametan ritual rooted in Javanese traditions, integrates religious devotion with cultural and social dimensions. It symbolizes collective identity, sustains moral values, and links individuals to the divine. This study aimed to understand how kenduri functions as a symbolic communication system, transmitting meanings through foods, prayers, spatial arrangements, and adaptive practices. Ethnographic fieldwork was conducted in a Javanese diaspora community in North Sumatra, employing participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. Data were coded and thematically analyzed to uncover how participants interpret and negotiate the ritual’s symbolic elements. The results indicate that kenduri ’s constituent symbols—such as bubur merah putih and ingkung—convey notions of purity, spirituality, and life cycles, while seating arrangements and prayer recitations foster communal unity and reinforce moral cohesion. Local adaptations, including the incorporation of regional ingredients, demonstrate kenduri ’s resilience in a pluralistic environment. These findings reveal kenduri as a dynamic communicative event, linking cultural heritage with contemporary realities and maintaining relevance despite historical shifts and demographic changes. By underscoring the ritual’s integrative and adaptive nature, this research advances our understanding of how religious practices generate and convey meaning across diverse contexts. Ultimately, kenduri exemplifies how ritual communication can preserve core values, reinforce community solidarity, and guide spiritual engagement, offering valuable insights for future comparative and interdisciplinary studies.

Abstract

This study examines the trends and development of academic research on religious tolerance using bibliometric methods and data from Scopus, analyzed through VOSviewer. The findings show that scholarly attention peaked in 2017, with a subsequent decline up to 2024, reflecting shifts in academic focus from social prejudice to themes such as religious pluralism, interfaith relations, and education’s role in fostering tolerance. Indonesia plays a central role in this global discourse, particularly through the practice of Islamic moderation and the contributions of religious organizations such as Nahdlatul Ulama. Geographic analysis reveals that while the United States leads in publication volume, Indonesia ranks second, highlighting its growing influence. The study also maps thematic evolutions and keyword networks, underscoring the transition toward a deeper understanding of pluralism and inclusive social policies. Although limited by reliance on a single database and the exclusion of non-English literature, the research offers valuable insights into Indonesia’s strategic position in the global religious tolerance landscape and suggests directions for future studies on digital media, globalization, and minority experiences. These findings have significant implications for policymakers, educators, and social organizations aiming to promote peaceful coexistence in diverse societies.

Abstract

This study focuses on a qualitative discourse analysis to understand how the concepts of halal and tayyib are constructed and disseminated on social media to influence consumer perceptions. While the study provides a theoretical framework to understand this phenomenon, it does not present quantitative data on the direct increase in consumer purchasing decisions. The findings reveal that social media has transformed how the people of Medan interact with the concepts of halal and tayyib. These platforms serve not only as sources of information but also as spaces for community building and influencing purchasing behavior. For business actors, understanding the dynamics of social media interaction is crucial for developing effective marketing strategies. The study concludes that social media has reshaped the landscape of halal product consumption in Medan. These platforms function as both information hubs and community builders that influence consumer choices. Social, psychological, and technological factors interact in the diffusion process of halal product innovations..
