Abstract

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are crucial contributors to Indonesia’s economy but continue to face barriers in adopting digital transformation, particularly in business communication, branding, and customer relationship management. Many MSME owners lack sufficient digital knowledge and confidence to implement effective online strategies, resulting in limited market visibility and customer engagement. To address these challenges, a community empowerment initiative was conducted with the primary goal of enhancing entrepreneurs’ digital competence and strengthening their ability to build brand identity and customer loyalty. The program applied the Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, emphasizing collaborative involvement across stages of needs assessment, training, mentoring, and evaluation. Twenty MSME participants from the culinary, fashion, service, and household product sectors actively took part.  The results indicated significant improvements in understanding digital communication, developing creative content, and integrating social media into business strategies. Participants also demonstrated stronger collaboration, initiative, and confidence in digital marketing practices. These outcomes highlight the importance of hands-on, collaborative learning in bridging the digital literacy gap and fostering innovation among MSMEs. By improving their digital capabilities, MSMEs are better positioned to sustain growth, expand market reach, and contribute to a more inclusive digital economy. The initiative supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) through continuous learning and skills development, SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) through entrepreneurship empowerment, and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) by promoting innovation and sustainable digital transformation.

Abstract

This community service program aims to enhance the digital financial literacy of Micro, small, and medium-sized businesses (MSMEs) can learn how to use the Indonesian Standard Quick Response Code (QRIS) as a different way to pay online. The program activities involved culinary, service, and retail practitioners from MSMEs, as claimed by the State University of Medan. These activities were differentiated and grouped into planning, socialization and education, technical training and simulation, mentoring and monitoring, and evaluation, within the framework of the Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach. This approach helps MSME practitioners who need assistance to learn and practice digital transactions, as well as reflect on their experiences afterwards. There are positive results related to participants' knowledge, confidence, and technical competence in using QRIS. Moreover, the program fostered behavioral change and collaboration among MSME actors in adopting digital transaction systems. The implementation of QRIS also contributed to more efficient, secure, and transparent financial management within their businesses. Overall, this community service initiative demonstrates that participatory and practice-based education combined with continuous mentoring is an effective strategy to accelerate digital transformation and promote financial inclusion among MSMEs. This initiative is also closely aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, and Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities. By improving digital financial literacy and promoting inclusive access to digital payment systems, the program supports the creation of a more resilient, innovative, and equitable economic ecosystem for MSMEs in Indonesia.

Abstract

This community service program was implemented at SMKS Pesantren Alam Indonesia (PAI) Barru, South Sulawesi, the only Islamic boarding vocational school in agriculture committed to producing graduates who are both spiritually and technically competent. The area’s potential, such as approximately 5 hectares of fertile land, agricultural practice facilities, and strong social support from the local community, makes it ideal for developing a pesantren-based techno-edutourism center. However, resource management remains conventional and has not yet integrated modern technologies. The main problems include the absence of an Internet of Things (IoT)-based monitoring system, the lack of a modern irrigation system, and limited digital promotion for edutourism management. To address these challenges, the program applied the Service Learning (SL) approach, which integrates academic learning with direct community engagement. The implementation involved lectures, demonstrations, and participatory discussions, structured into three stages: preparation, training and hands-on practice, and evaluation. The activities focused on introducing agricultural drone technology, IoT-based monitoring systems, and the development of automated irrigation systems, complemented by digital branding simulations for edutourism. The results indicate an increase in teachers’ and students’ knowledge of smart farming, improved efficiency in agricultural practices, and the establishment of a digital promotion system to support edutourism development. This program contributes to five Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), while also serving as a sustainable pesantren empowerment model that can be replicated in other regions.
