Abstract

This study aims to achieve two main objectives. First, it identifies the types of moral values embedded in the video game Resident Evil 6 using the theoretical framework by Sulistyorini and Andalas. Second, it examines the relevance of these moral values in contemporary social and political contexts. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research highlights how moral values serve as guidelines for ethical behavior and decision-making, particularly in addressing crises and upholding justice in modern society. Interactive media like Resident Evil 6 integrate these values, reflecting real-world ethical challenges. The findings reveal 17 moral values in the game, including individual values (e.g., responsibility, justice, honesty, obedience, sacrifice, respect, prudence, wisdom) and social values (e.g., empathy, perseverance for the common good, loyalty, helpfulness, fairness, tolerance, trustworthiness), alongside the religious value of faith. These values are expressed through character dialogues and actions. The study concludes that these moral principles remain relevant today, particularly in themes like leadership accountability, collective struggle, justice, cooperation, and ethical decision-making in global crises.

Abstract

This study analyzes the forms of struggle of the main character in the novel Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson. Using a qualitative content analysis method with the approach of Badio's struggle theory (2022), this study identifies and classifies the various types of struggles experienced by David Balfour. The results of the study show that there are 28 valid forms of struggle, divided into four main categories: (1) 7 heroic struggles, (2) 11 never-give-up struggles, (3) 2 family-related struggles, and (4) 8 selflessness struggles. Interesting findings show the absence of elements of nationalism-based struggle in the story narrative. This study provides a new perspective on character development through life challenges in classic literary works.

Abstract

This thesis analyzes the narrative structure of Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 adaptation of The Great Gatsby using A.J. Greimas’ actantial model. The study aims to explore how the roles of actants influence the story’s progression and themes, and how the narrative structure shapes character relationships within the film. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research identifies and categorizes the six actants—Subject, Object, Sender, Receiver, Helper, and Opponent—within the movie’s plot. The analysis reveals that Jay Gatsby functions as the Subject in pursuit of Daisy Buchanan, the Object, with the supporting characters embodying various actantial roles that shape the film’s development. The study also applies Greimas’ canonical narrative schema to examine the narrative progression through stages of Manipulation, Competence, Performance, and Sanction. Findings show that the movie’s narrative structure not only follows a classical storytelling model but also reflects deeper socio-cultural themes such as the illusion of the American Dream, class struggle, and identity. Through this approach, the research highlights how structuralist narrative theory enhances the understanding of character dynamics and thematic complexity in cinematic adaptations of literary works.

Abstract

This study aims to identify vocabulary learning strategy used, analysis repetition strategy implementation, examine effectiveness on vocabulary retention, and formulate an adaptive model for local contexts. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected from one primary and three supporting informants through interviews, observations, document analysis, and stimulated recall sessions. Analysis revealed that the primary informant developed a sophisticated multi – modal repetition system with four techniques; temporal spacing, multi – modal reinforcement, contextual variation, and self- testing. Developments factors included prior learning experiences, parental influence, teacher methodology, and assessment patterns. Thematic analysis yielded five themes: systematic organization, multimodal implementation, metacognitive awareness, contextual influences, and strategy evolution. This research strategies gaps in literature by examining vocabulary learning in rural coastal schools, adaption of repetition strategies to local contexts, and integration of traditional strategies with innovative elements under limited technological resources. Findings contribute to developing more inclusive vocabulary learning models for diverse educational contexts in Indonesia.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze gender inequality in Theodore Dreiser's Sister Carrie (1900), focusing on the intersection of social structure and economic inequality. Using a qualitative research method, as outlined by Creswell (2013), this study examines the ways in which gender roles and social class disparities shape the lives and experiences of the novel's central characters. The theoretical framework draws upon Fakih’s (2013) perspective on gender inequality, which highlights the systemic nature of gender-based oppression within social and economic structures. Through a close reading of Sister Carrie, the research explores how Carrie Meeber’s social mobility and relationships are impacted by her gender, as well as how economic systems reinforce her position as a marginalized woman. The analysis reveals the intricate ways in which gender inequality is intertwined with class structures and economic forces, influencing the choices and agency of female characters in a capitalist society. This study contributes to understanding the role of gender and economic inequality in early 20th-century American literature, shedding light on the enduring relevance of these issues in contemporary society.
