Abstract

Parody is one of the intertextual artistic statements with a certain character that has been recognized for a long time not only for witty satire but also for criticism. The object of this research was the Eternals movie (2021) and the Eternals comic(1967-1977). Using a qualitative method, this research is intended to identify the parody. There are two main sources of data collection: film and comic. Then, a series of data collection consists of watching films and taking scenes, dialog, and film visuals, juxtaposing the comic data taken using the reading method, and recording the results of the data found. This study uses Linda Hutcheon's theory of political parody. The result shows that (1) there are forms of parody in the Eternals film, which are described from two perspectives, namely the existence of subversion and legitimacy in several elements such as character function, character gender, storytelling structure, and cultural dilution. (2) There are parodied representations of God in movies and comics. (3) Parody not only changes but also creates incongruity in the placement of women as superior, the portrayal of superheroes, and the portrayal of villains in movies.

Abstract

This research aims to describe discourse and racism in the Hidden Figures movie using discourse and racism theory based on Dijk's approach. The results showed that the ten aspects of Dijk's theory of discourse and racism could be found in several characters such as speech, expressions, and actions that refer to the use of discourse and racism in the Hidden Figures movie. Two aspects of discourse and racism are most dominantly depicted in this movie, namely aspects of nonverbal structure and aspects of syntax. In the nonverbal structure aspect, the visible form of racism is the depiction of facial expressions such as anger, annoyance, and dislike as well as body movements refusing to interact for a long time with black people. Discourse and racism in the Hidden Figures movie also display racist behavior towards black people as a reflection of a system of prejudice, namely negative emotional reactions and stereotypes, namely judgments or assumptions based on groups and people's characteristics. This is illustrated by the experiences of Katherine, Dorothy, and Mary regarding the separation of public facilities such as toilets, libraries, and education.

Abstract

This research discusses the aspects of action and speech that are contained in The Invisible Man movie based on the theory of Jespersen and Palmer (2007) in the sub-categories commissive, directive, and volitive. The objective of this research is to describe deontic modality in three sub-categories commissive, directive, and volitive in The Invisible Man movie. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The sources of data of this research are audio visual as primary data and written utterances from screenshotting and transcribing as secondary data. The data is from The Invisible Man movie. Data collection was carried out by searching and downloading movies, watching movies, screenshotting, classifying, and coding. Data were analyzed by presenting, describing, interpreting, and concluding data to answer research questions from this research. The results show that 18 data are included in the sub-categories commissive, directive, and volitive. Deontic modality appears because it is made by several characters in the movie that make promises and threats (commissive), make requests, order others to do something, give suggestions, carry out obligations (directive), and hope for something (volitive). The researcher found that the characters in The Invisible Man movie adopt deontic modality aspects that focus on the sub-categories commissive, directive, and volitive modality because many scenes show how aspects of the three sub-categories are used by characters to overcome existing problems. These three sub-categories are related to each other, the existence of a commissive that will lead to the directive to volitive.
