Abstract

Objective: The objective of this study is to explore the role of context in directing Quranic readings, particularly in light of the transition of verbal discourse, by linking verbs to their preceding and succeeding contexts. It aims to define context, explain the guidance of Quranic readings, and analyze discourse transition. Theoretical Framework: This research is based on the hermeneutics of the Qur’an, particularly the contextual approach in interpretation. This theory emphasizes that the meaning of the Qur’an depends not only on the text but also on its linguistic and historical context. Literature Review: The literature review discusses previous studies on contextual interpretation in Quranic readings, highlighting the contributions of classical and modern scholars. Methods: The study employs a descriptive, analytical, and contextual approach as its methodology, analyzing different types of verbal discourse transitions in Quranic readings and providing examples that illustrate their contextual significance. Results: The results indicate that scholars guiding Quranic readings prioritize interpretations that align with the context, considering them stronger and more appropriate than alternative readings. Context is categorized into internal linguistic context and external situational context, both of which play a comprehensive role in directing Quranic readings. Implications: This research enriches the methodology of Qur’anic interpretation by emphasizing the role of context in understanding discourse transitions, helping scholars, religious leaders, and society interpret verses more accurately and relevantly. Novelty: The novelty of this study lies in its focused exploration of the role of discourse transition in contextualizing Quranic readings, an area that has not been extensively examined in previous research.

Abstract

Objective: This study explores the pivotal role of Umar Ibn Abdulaziz (may Allah have mercy on him), the eighth Umayyad Caliph, in initiating the official compilation of Hadith. Recognized for his piety and administrative reforms, his efforts to preserve the Sunnah marked a transformative phase in Islamic intellectual history. The primary objective of this research is to analyze the motivations, methodologies, and impacts of his directive to collect and document the sayings and practices of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Theoretical Framework: The theoretical framework of this study is grounded in the principles of Islamic historiography and the science of Hadith, emphasizing the role of codification in religious preservation. Additionally, it adopts an epistemological approach to analyze the transmission and authentication of Hadith. Literature Review: The literature review explores previous research on Hadith compilation, particularly examining the works of early Hadith scholars such as Imam Malik, Al-Bukhari, and Muslim, whose collections were influenced by Umar Ibn Abdulaziz’s initiative. Methods: This study employs a qualitative historical research method, analyzing primary and secondary sources, including classical Hadith literature, historical chronicles, and contemporary scholarly discussions. By examining original edicts and narrations regarding Umar Ibn Abdulaziz’s policies, the study reconstructs the intellectual and political context of the first formal Hadith compilation. Results: Findings reveal that Umar Ibn Abdulaziz’s directive significantly mitigated the risks of Hadith distortion and loss, providing a systematic foundation for later Hadith scholars. His initiative institutionalized the Hadith collection, inspiring subsequent scholars to develop rigorous methodologies for authentication and classification. Implications: The study further highlights the implications of his codification efforts in shaping the framework of Islamic jurisprudence and Hadith studies. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in its detailed analysis of the methodological transformation introduced during Umar Ibn Abdulaziz’s reign and its long-term impact on Islamic scholarship. By bridging historical narratives with modern epistemological perspectives, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the development of Hadith sciences and Islamic legal thought.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the optimization of zakat, infaq, and sadaqah (ZIS) funds in improving human resource quality at the Asia Moslem Charity Foundation (YAM). The foundation focuses on managing ZIS funds to support various social programs, particularly in enhancing education and human resource capacity. Proper allocation of ZIS funds can significantly contribute to improving educational quality and the effectiveness of human resource development in the community. Theoretical Framework: The theoretical framework of this study is based on the principles of Islamic philanthropy and Shariah compliance, emphasizing the effective and transparent distribution of zakat funds for socio-economic development. Literature Review: Literature review findings highlight that previous studies have extensively discussed the role of zakat in poverty alleviation and economic empowerment but have not thoroughly explored its impact on human resource development within Islamic foundations. Methods: This research adopts a qualitative approach using a case study method. Data collection involved in-depth interviews with foundation managers, teachers, and beneficiaries, as well as document analysis related to ZIS fund management at YAM. Additionally, an evaluation of human resource programs funded by ZIS was conducted to determine their contribution to education and workforce development. Results: The results indicate that ZIS funds at YAM have been effectively utilized to support various educational programs, such as scholarships for underprivileged students, procurement of educational facilities, and teacher training. In the field of human resource development, ZIS funds have also been used for community-based training, digital skills development, and da’i (Islamic preacher) training. However, challenges remain, particularly regarding transparency in fund management and the need for improved coordination between divisions. Implications: The implications of this study emphasize the importance of strengthening financial accountability and strategic planning in ZIS fund distribution to enhance human resource quality. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in its in-depth analysis of the integration between ZIS fund management and strategies to improve human resource capacity within Islamic foundations. This study also provides practical recommendations for ZIS fund managers to enhance the effectiveness of fund allocation, ensuring broader social welfare impacts.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the optimization of health insurance programs in Islamic boarding schools through the lens of Maqashid Sharia. Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), as religious-based educational institutions accommodating thousands of students, face various challenges in providing adequate and sustainable health services. The health insurance program initiated by the Health Social Security Administration Agency has emerged as a potential solution to improve health access within these institutions. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework of this research is built upon the integration of Islamic legal philosophy (Maqashid Sharia) with public policy analysis in health management. Literature review: Previous literature highlights the significance of Maqashid Sharia in evaluating welfare-oriented programs, yet little attention has been paid to health program implementation in faith-based educational institutions. Methods: Using a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach, this study collected data through in-depth interviews with pesantren administrators, students, and BPJS representatives, complemented by document analysis of regulations and policies related to health programs in pesantren. Results: The findings reveal that the health insurance program has brought significant benefits in ensuring access to health services and protecting student welfare, particularly in terms of hifz an-nafs. However, several obstacles remain, including limited awareness among stakeholders, insufficient socialization of the program, and administrative complexities in premium management. From the Maqashid Sharia perspective, the program contributes positively to the protection of life but requires further optimization to align with broader sharia objectives, such as safeguarding wealth and intellect. Implications: The implication of this study emphasizes the need for policy improvements, targeted socialization strategies, and integration of sharia-based health education in pesantren. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in its interdisciplinary analysis, combining Islamic legal theory with contemporary health program evaluation, which offers a new perspective in the field of Islamic social welfare studies.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to explore the role of Islamic banks in managing remittance inflows in Bangladesh, focusing on their contribution to economic stability and financial inclusion. Theoretical framework: This study is based on Islamic economic and financial development theory, which emphasizes the role of Islamic financial institutions in supporting economic growth through the principles of sharia compliance, distribution fairness, and operational efficiency in financial transactions. Literature review: The literature review includes data and publications from Bangladesh banks, Islamic bank reports, academic journals, and previous articles, as well as global data sources such as the World Bank, which highlights the dynamics of remittances and the role of Islamic financial institutions in the macroeconomic context of Bangladesh. Methods: This study uses secondary data from three base quarters (October–December 2018, 2020, and 2022), which are then compared with the previous quarter and the same quarter of the previous year, to analyze the growth of Islamic bank branches, remittance market share, and their operational strength. Results: The results of the study show that Islamic banks, especially Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited, dominate the remittance market, followed by Al-Arafah Islami Bank Limited. Despite the growth, these banks also face some operational challenges that need to be addressed. Implications: These findings provide important implications for policymakers and the Islamic banking industry, namely the need to strengthen infrastructure and operational strategies to increase remittance flows through Islamic channels to promote national economic stability. Novelty: The novelty of this study lies in its cross-quarter comparative approach and specific focus on the contribution of Islamic banks in remittances, which has not been systematically studied in the context of Bangladesh.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to investigate the feasibility and implications of integrating Zakat, an Islamic obligatory almsgiving system, into modern state taxation structures within Muslim-majority countries. Theoretical framework: The research is grounded in two complementary theoretical frameworks: fiscal sociology, which explores how taxation reflects socio-legal norms, and Islamic economic theory, which emphasizes wealth redistribution through moral and religious obligations.  Literature review: The literature review highlights that while scholars such as Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Monzer Kahf, and Habib Ahmed have extensively discussed zakat’s socio-economic role, there remains a gap in practical models that link zakat to national tax regimes without compromising Sharia principles or state fiscal efficiency. The coexistence of these systems often leads to conceptual confusion and administrative inefficiencies, particularly in countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia. Methods: Methodologically, this research adopts a qualitative, comparative legal and economic approach, drawing on policy documents, legal statutes, and case studies from selected Muslim-majority countries. It critically examines institutional frameworks, public finance policies, and compliance behavior, while also employing doctrinal analysis of maqāṣid al-sharīʿah (objectives of Islamic law) to assess religious alignment. Results: The findings reveal that integration is hampered by legal fragmentation, institutional redundancy, and low public trust. However, models that incorporate zakat into the tax system—either through deductions, exemptions, or parallel recognition—demonstrate improved compliance, reduced welfare burdens on the state, and enhanced civic participation rooted in religious ethics. The study proposes a Hybrid Integration Framework comprising legal recognition, digital registries, transparent oversight, taxpayer choice mechanisms, and intersectoral collaboration. Implications: The implications of this research are significant for policymakers seeking to harmonize Sharia-based obligations with secular governance systems. By fostering synergy between religious mandates and public finance tools, this study offers a pathway toward more equitable and accountable fiscal models. Novelty: The novelty of this study lies in its dual-theoretical lens and the practical policy framework it develops for integrating religious and civic financial duties in a way that aligns with both ethical and administrative imperatives.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the integration of Islamic philosophy with the concept of health and its influence on the development of modern pharmacy, especially in the application of Islamic values to halal, ethical, and sustainability standards. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework of this research is based on the maqasid sharia, which emphasizes the preservation of the soul, health, and well-being, as well as the philosophical thought of Islamic science represented by the contributions of classical scientists such as Al-Razi, Ibn Sina, and Al-Zahrawi in the development of pharmaceuticals. Literature review: A literature review involved 15 journals accessed through trusted databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar), which discussed the contributions of Muslim scientists to herbal medicine, clinical observation, pharmaceutical innovation, and the application of Islamic values in pharmaceutical research and production. Methods: This study uses a literature review method with a qualitative approach, analyzing relevant academic articles and journals to identify the integration of Islamic values in modern pharmacy. Results: The results of the study show that classical Muslim scientists made significant contributions to modern pharmacy, including herbal medicine techniques and pharmaceutical innovations. In addition, Islamic values encourage the application of halal standards in the ingredients, production, and distribution of medicines. The challenges that arise include regulatory limitations and gaps in understanding the application of Islamic values in the pharmaceutical industry. Implications: These findings emphasize the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration between academia, industry, and regulators to develop modern pharmaceuticals based on Islamic values. This approach is considered more ethical, sustainable, and by the needs of the Muslim community. Novelty: This research offers a new perspective by integrating Islamic philosophy of science and health concepts into the development of modern pharmaceuticals, which have rarely been comprehensively discussed in previous research.
