Abstract

This study examines the forms of implicature in the lyrics ofLove Will Prevailby Maher Zain using a pragmatic approach based on HP Grice's theory of implicature. The research aims to identify the types of conventional and conversational implicatures found in the song and to analyze how situational and cultural contexts influence the interpretation of its implied meanings. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, with the song lyrics serving as the primary data source. Data were analyzed through identification, classification, and interpretation of implicature types, followed by contextual analysis.  The findings reveal that both conventional and conversational implicatures are present in the lyrics. However, conversational implicature is more dominant (62.5%) than conventional implicature (37.5%). The flouting of conversational maxims particularly the maxims of quantity, relevance, and manner functions as a strategic rhetorical device to convey emotional depth, collective suffering, hope, and spiritual resilience. Furthermore, the interpretation of implicature is strongly influenced by situational context, such as global humanitarian crises, and cultural-religious values embedded in the lyrics. These contextual dimensions expand the meaning beyond literal interpretation and position the song as a form of moral and humanitarian discourse. The study concludes that song lyrics function not only as artistic expression but also as pragmatic communication rich in implicit meaning. The application of Grice's theory demonstrates its continued relevance in analyzing contemporary musical discourse.

Abstract

Film functions as a powerful cultural medium that communicates social values, identities, and ideologies through visual and narrative signs, making it an important site for examining representations of gender and motherhood in contemporary cinema. While previous studies on horror films have largely discussed maternal figures from feminist perspectives or idealized constructions of motherhood, less attention has been paid to the symbolic and ideological meanings that emerge when maternal identity intersects with monstrosity. This study analyzes how motherhood and monstrosity are constructed and interconnected in the character of Nadja in Blood Red Sky (2021) by applying Roland Barthes’s semiotic theory of denotation, connotation, and myth. We employed a qualitative descriptive method with purposive sampling, and examined selected key scenes through visual and narrative signs such as color symbolism, lighting, facial expressions, body movement, and cinematographic techniques. The findings show that motherhood is represented through emotional care, moral responsibility, and ultimate sacrifice, while monstrosity is framed as a transformative process driven by maternal necessity rather than as a purely destructive force. At the mythic level, the film naturalizes the ideology that maternal love can legitimize transformation, violence, and self-sacrifice, positioning the maternal body as a space where vulnerability and power coexist. This study offers a novel contribution by demonstrating that monstrosity in Blood Red Sky is not opposed to motherhood but becomes an integral part of it. These findings are significant for literary and film studies because they expand semiotic and feminist readings of maternal figures, showing how contemporary narratives reinterpret motherhood as a complex, ambivalent, and ideologically negotiated identity rather than a fixed or purely nurturing role.

Abstract

Language style plays a crucial role in shaping communication dynamics in media, particularly in talk shows where formal and informal exchanges often coexist. However, limited studies have explored how language styles manifest in humorous interview formats, revealing a gap between theoretical classifications and real-life applications. This study aims to examine the language styles employed in the “Ushi and Dushi” talk show episode featuring Adele. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the research involved downloading and transcribing the episode from YouTube to analyze the verbal interactions between the host (Ushi) and the guest (Adele). The dialogues were categorized based on Joos’ (1967) five language style classifications: frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate. The analysis identified 17 instances of language style use, consisting of 1 formal, 8 casual, 2 consultative, 2 frozen, and 4 intimate styles. The findings reveal that casual style is predominantly used by the host, contributing to the comedic and informal tone of the show, whereas the interviewee primarily employs formal style, possibly due to the structured setting resembling a news broadcast. This contrast illustrates the interplay between setting, role, and communicative intent in shaping linguistic choices. The study concludes that even in entertainment-focused formats, language style serves strategic functions and is influenced by both context and participant roles, offering valuable insight into pragmatic language use in media discourse.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze of verbal humor in Jimmy O. Yang's stand-up comedy special Guess How Much using Shade's theory of verbal humor classification and the General Theory of Verbal Humor (GTVH) by Raskin and Attardo. Shade categorizes verbal humor into twelve types: pun, riddle, joke, satire, limerick, parody, anecdote, farce, irony, sarcasm, tall tale, and wit. Meanwhile, GTVH identifies six interrelated knowledge resources used to construct humor: Script Opposition (SO), Logical Mechanism (LM), Situation (SI), Target (TA), Narrative Strategy (NS), and Language (LA). This research uses a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected from the transcript of the performance video, focusing on utterances that contain verbal humor. The results show that 11 out of 12 types of verbal humor appear in the performance, with anecdote being the most dominant, found in 15 out of 61 humorous utterances. This reflects Jimmy O. Yang's storytelling-based comedic style, which relies heavily on personal experiences, cultural background, and everyday life. Based on the types of humor found, the results also indicate that all six Knowledge Resources from GTVH are used in constructing the verbal humor. This study reveals that Jimmy O. Yang's humor is not only entertaining but also reflects his identity as an Asian-American and his experience growing up in an immigrant family. The combination of Shade's theory and GTVH provides a comprehensive understanding of how verbal humor is structured and meaningful. The findings show that verbal humor in stand-up comedy can serve as a vehicle for cultural expression, identity construction, and social commentary, while also engaging the audience through powerful and personal storytelling.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the verbal humor techniques employed by Jake Peralta and explain the function of humor in his interactions with other characters. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with Berger's (1993) humor technique theory to analyze the verbal humor techniques employed by Jake Peralta and and Nilsen & Nilsen's (2018) humor function theory to analyze the functions of verbal humor used by Jake Peralta. Data were taken from Jake Peralta's dialogues in nine episodes selected purposively. The results show that there are 13 humor techniques, including puns, sarcasm, irony, ridicule, insults, facetiousness, exaggeration, absurdity, ignorance, impersonation, imitation, mimicry, and parody. In terms of the function of humor, it was found that the social function was the most common, followed by the psychological function. Jake Peralta used verbal humor to create a  more relaxed working atmosphere, strengthen relationships with his colleagues, and ease tension in stressful situations. These results show that Jake Peralta's verbal humor is not just entertainment, but also an important communication strategy in building character dynamics and storyline in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the language disorders experienced by the main character with mental disabilities and the impact of these disorders on his social interactions in the film I Am Sam through a psycholinguistic approach. This study uses Bloom & Lahey's (1978) theory of language disorders and Vygotsky's (1978) theory of social interaction and a psycholinguistic approach that focuses on the relationship between mental processes and individual language abilities. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques in the form of observations of dialogues and scenes in the film that represent symptoms of language disorders. The results of the study show that Sam experiences several forms of language disorders, including receptive language disorder, expressive language disorder, and pragmatic language disorder. Sam's language disorder has a significant impact on his ability to interact socially, where he often experiences misunderstandings, limitations in expressing emotions, and dependence on his immediate social environment. These findings reinforce the understanding that cognitive limitations due to mental disabilities greatly affect language aspects, both receptively and productively.

Abstract

This study aims to analyzes the symbolism found in the library depicted Matt Haig's novel The Midnight Library. The purpose of this study is to identify and interpret the symbols that appear in the library. The method used is qualitative descriptive, with a focus on text data interpretation. Edward Sapir's (1934) classification of symbols was used to determine the types of symbols that  appear, while Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach was applied to understand the process of meaning formation through the relationship between representamen, object, and interpretant. The results of the study show that there are nine main symbols divided into referential symbols and condensation symbols. The referential has three symbols, those are The Book of Regrets, The Static Clock 00:00:00, and The Game of Chess. Where is condensation has six symbols, namely The Light, The Green Book, The Midnight Library, The Moving Shelves, Mrs. Elm, and Nora Seed. In terms of meaning, the referential symbols directly reflect Nora's experiences, choices, and regrets, while the condensation symbols combine various ideas and emotions, such as hope, uncertainty, the search for identity, and the potential for change. These findings confirm that the symbols in the library serve not only as narrative elements but also as semiotic devices that reveal the main character's existential struggles and process of self-reflection.

Abstract

The concept of green flag in romantic relationships has gained increasing attention as a representation of healthy and supportive partner. However, its application in literary studies, particularly in relation to masculinity remains underexplored. This study aims to analyze the representation of the green flag concept in relationships through the character of Atlas Corrigan in the novel It Starts With Us by Colleen Hoover. It also highlights how Atlas’s actions and behaviors reflect green flag traits and demonstrate a form of non-hegemonic masculinity within a contemporary social context. This study adopts a sociological approach in literature, which sees literary works as a reflection of social realities, cultural values, and norms of interaction that exist in society. The theoretical framework applied includes the concept of the green flag in relationships, Judith Butler's (1990) theory of Gender Performativity, as well as research on masculinity. This research method uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data sourced from dialogues, narratives, and character interactions of Atlas Corrigan that are relevant to the focus of the research. Data were collected using a close reading technique and analyzed using thematic coding based on the green flag indicators, gender performativity, and masculinity type. The findings show that atlas consistently demonstrates green flag traits such as empathy, healthy communication, respect for boundaries, and emotional support. These repeated behaviors construct a non-hegemonic masculinity that is more egalitarian and supportive, reflecting a shift in contemporary social values toward healthier romantic relationship and more inclusive masculine identities in popular literature. This study contributes to literary studies by offering a new perspective on positive masculinity and encouraging the inclusion of healthy relationship representations in literary works.
