Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the experience of trauma and the process of trauma recovery are represented in selected poems from the book Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur. The objectives of this study are to (1) identify the depiction of trauma through Lucien Goldmann's (1977) Genetic Structuralism approach, and (2) examine the process of recovery from trauma based on Judith Herman's (2001) Trauma and Recovery theory. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative method and selected poems from the hurting and the healing section of Milk and Honey as primary data. The findings on the poems from the hurting section depict deep psychological trauma through fragmented language and minimalist style. Using Goldmann's genetic structuralism, the researcher found that the trauma depicted in the poems reflects not only personal suffering, but also the collective consciousness of women silenced by patriarchal structures. In addition, other findings show that the poems reflect the three main stages of trauma recovery proposed by Judith Herman: establishing a sense of safety, remembering and mourning, and reconnecting. These stages are found especially in some of the healing chapter poems, where characters express self-empowerment, healing, and emotional recovery after experiencing abuse, violence, and loss

Abstract

This study aims to explore the portrayal of South Sudanese cultural identity in the film The Good Lie, focusing on the main characters' efforts to maintain their cultural heritage while facing the challenges of displacement and resettlement in the United States. Using Evason (2018) theory of South Sudanese cultural identity and Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis, this study examines the ways in which South Sudanese cultural values, traditions, and social ties are portrayed in the film. The analysis highlights key cultural elements such as family ties, religious practices, and food sharing customs, which play an important role in preserving identity amidst change. The findings suggest that The Good Lie not only represents the resilience of Sudanese refugees in maintaining their cultural roots but also sheds light on the structural barriers that influence their resettlement process. This research contributes to discussions on cultural representation in media and provides insight into the complexities of identity preservation among displaced communities.

Abstract

This research discusses Maleficent's motherhood instinct towards her former lover's child in the movie "Maleficent 1 & 2". This research aims to analyze and understand the role and changes in Maleficent's character as a surrogate mother figure towards the child. The qualitative method of analysis involves an in-depth review of the two films, focusing on Maleficent's interactions with the child, the dynamics of their relationship, and the impact of key events in the narrative on Maleficent's character evolution. The findings of this study highlight Maleficent's emotional complexity and inner conflict in assuming the role of surrogate mother. The results of the analysis show that Maleficent's character undergoes a profound emotional transformation, from a conflicted beginning to finally becoming a figure who has a strong emotional bond with the child. Factors such as betrayal, forgiveness, and character growth are the main focus in discussing the dynamics of this relationship. In addition, this study can provide additional insights into the representation of gender roles and family relationship dynamics in the context of fantasy films. As such, this research contributes to our understanding of character complexity in film narratives, especially in portraying the unexpected maternal instincts of characters commonly associated with evil or antagonistic sides. Keywords: Instinct, Conflict, Motherhood, Character

Abstract

Contemporary hip-hop has established itself as one of the most powerful forms of social commentary in popular music, yet limited scholarly attention has been paid to how satirical techniques specifically function within contemporary albums as both artistic devices and tools for social critique. This study examines the satirical elements in Kendrick Lamar's 2015 album "To Pimp a Butterfly" and analyzes how these elements are constructed through the interplay of musical composition, lyrical content, and cultural context. Using an integrated theoretical framework combining Linda Hutcheon's satirical theory and Philip Tagg's song analysis theory, this qualitative research employs thematic analysis to identify and categorize satirical techniques across the album's content. The analysis reveals six distinct types of satirical elements: irony and contradiction, personification and allegorical satire, exaggeration and hyperbole, parody and cultural mimicry, temporal satire and anachronism, and meta-satirical self-critique. Among these, irony and contradiction emerged as the most prevalent technique, functioning as the foundation of Lamar's critical approach to exposing contradictions inherent in American society. The study demonstrates how satirical meaning in contemporary hip-hop emerges from complex multi-modal expression rather than from lyrical content alone, contributing to understanding of how popular music functions as a vehicle for sophisticated social critique while maintaining commercial viability and artistic authenticity.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the main character's change as a victim of sexual violence in the film "Speak" using the semiotics of signs. The focus of this research is to find out and examine the semiotics sign and the meaning in the film “Speak” (2004). This research follows the theory of semiotics sign by Roland Barthes (1968 & 1972). Semiotics is the study of signs and their relationship with other signs and the meaning of signs. This research uses qualitative methods and watching and taking screenshots in the form of pictures or images that will contain paint, action, words, gestures, expressions, and appearances that are part of scenarios or scenes in the film "Speak" as the technique for collecting data. In data analysis, the research took the theory by Miles, Huberman, & Saldana (2014). Semiotic signs obtained in the film "Speak" include positive and negative changes with signs of distrust, anger, helplessness, fear, desperation, self-blame, embarrassment, trust, courage, and self-esteem and also the meaning of these signs concerning the main character's change as a victim of sexual violence. It can be concluded that the signs obtained are interrelated with each other. The changes in the main character are related to the incident, the perpetrator, the environment, and the stigma from outside and within, shown through the thoughts, feelings, and behavior of the victim as a result of a bad experience.

Abstract

This study explores how hyperbolic expressions in the lyrics of Radiohead’s OK Computer represent depression and influence listeners' perceptions of mental health. Using psychological theories from Edward Bibring and Sigmund Freud, alongside Hans Georg Gadamer’s hermeneutic approach, the research examines how exaggerated phrases intensify themes of overwhelming mental struggle, invasive thoughts, despair, and alienation. These hyperbolic expressions vividly portray the emotional chaos and isolation of depression, making it more relatable for listeners. The findings show that these expressions evoke strong emotional responses, deepening empathy and shaping listeners' understanding of depression. This study highlights the role of music in influencing public perceptions of mental health.

Abstract

This research aims to analyse gender differences between men and women in Barbie film by using Roland Barthes’(1968 & 1972) theory of semiotics signs which are classified into denotation, connotation, and myth. This research used a descriptive qualitative method where the data taken from the scenes and the dialogues from the film. The scenes are examples of non-verbal signs while the dialogues are examples of verbal signs. Furthermore, the research is also supported by theory of gender performativity from Judith Butler (1999). Performativity is a repetitive act as a human (men or women) to present themselves. Through 20 instances, the result of this study explores the gender differences conveyed by physical appearance, activities, roles, and characteristics of women and man characters in Barbie film.
