Abstract

Tomohon is a city located in North Sulawesi Province, which is unique in that it has no ocean but is flanked by two volcanic mountains, Mount Lokon and Mount Mahawu. Both mountains are still active, but are considered to provide fertility for agriculture and plantations for local residents. Mahawu Mount has been designated as a special interest tourist attraction, where the local government has arranged infrastructure and facilities. However, the availability of existing facilities does not guarantee good management of the area, there are still many things that need attention. The purpose of this study was to examine visitor perceptions of the management of the Mahawu Mount tourist attraction facilities in Tomohon City. This research method uses a survey method conducted on 100 respondents who visit tourist sites.  The research instruments used were questionnaires and observations.  The  Likert scale is used to categorize each question, as well as the use of score interpretation to facilitate answers to respondents' assessments. The analysis used is descriptive, using tables and percentages.

Abstract

Sustainable development is a common agenda of various world countries including Indonesia. This development is applied in various sectors, one of which is tourism, known as the sustainable tourism development approach. This concept supports tourism activities that pay attention to natural, cultural, and environmental aspects in their management. One form of alternative tourism that can support sustainability is scientific tourism. This form of tourism is usually carried out by researchers who travel in the context of research or data collection. One of the locations that has become the destination of scientific tourism is Baduy Village. Various studies were conducted with respondents in the form of the Baduy tribe community, both with a co-production approach and through an extractive approach. The high intensity of research conducted for various interests, while the benefits of the research are not necessarily felt by the Baduy community. It is feared that it will have a negative impact on the Baduy community, especially in the socio-cultural aspect. In anticipation of this, efforts to control tourism activities need to be made. One of the ways that can be taken is the provision of boundary parties that ensure that the interaction between the community and tourists is safe, which can be in the form of tour guides and the formation of boundary organizations. The role of boundary parties is to provide access and provide education services by adjusting to the needs of researchers.

Abstract

The BSc tourism studies programme at the National Open University of Nigeria’s (NOUN) major study centres is experiencing instability in student enrolment. This study examined the attracting and retaining strategies being used by 10 key administrators of the NOUN to boost student enrolment in the programme, using a semi-structured interview technique, based Koch et al.’s student enrolment model. The research participants comprised 6 study centre directors (1 from each of the 6 geopolitical zones of Nigeria), the director of the NOUN’s learners support services, the dean of the faculty where the programme is domiciled, and the head of the programme. Results from the transcribed interviews which were content-analysed based on the student enrolment model and emergent themes show that although the NOUN’s stakeholders are making efforts, including visiting public places with flyers to inform prospective students about the programme, more needs to be done, especially by the host department to boost student enrolment in the programme. Consequently, these findings suggest the need for concerted efforts among the NOUN’s stakeholders to adopt and design measures to help identify and address low student enrolment in the programme, including changing its name to e.g., BSc Tourism and Hospitality Management.

Abstract

The incidence of crime and the effects it has on the operating performance of hotels has received a lot of attention, but it is hardly researched in African contexts. The study aims to examine the effect of crime on the hotel operating performance in Ibadan, Nigeria. Questionnaires were used to collect the data for the study. A systematic sampling technique was used in the selection of hotel staff for this study. Mean, correlation, ANOVA, and Stepwise regression were used in the analysis and interpretation of data. The study discovered that theft was the most occurring crime in hotel settings. The use of Stepwise regression shows that guest satisfaction, guest loyalty, patronage level of guests, employee turnover, revenue generation, achievement of organization goals, and sales of hotel products were the significant parameters of hotel performance that were affected while wastage of organizational resources was not. The study showed that there is a correlation between crime and hotel operating performance. It was concluded based on the findings that the incidence of crime strongly affected the operating performance of the hotel business in the study area. This study addressed both theoretical implications that provide support for the framework (routine activity theory and hot spot theory) and practical implications that offer suggestions for effective crime prevention strategies.

Abstract

Bali is renowned as a premier tourist destination, yet it faces significant challenges in terms of human resources within the tourism sector. This study aimed to analyze the current state of tourism human resources in Bali by examining their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Employing qualitative research methods, the study included thematic analysis based on insights from eight HR professionals in hotels and travel agencies across the island. The findings revealed that tourism HR in Bali possess adequate knowledge, skills, and a positive attitude toward their work. However, challenges persist, including a lack of mental readiness among younger professionals, limited English proficiency, uneven quality among tourism human resources, and insufficient supporting facilities for development. Addressing these issues is crucial for enhancing the overall quality of service and competitiveness in Bali's tourism sector, ensuring that it continues to thrive in an increasingly global market. This study highlights the need for targeted interventions to improve human resource capabilities and align them with the evolving demands of the industry.
