Abstract

The phenomenon of hoax news dissemination is a recurring social issue in society, including in the Telaga Biru Sub-district. This study aims to examine how the community in Telaga Biru constructs social meaning regarding hoax news during the 2024 election campaign, particularly as disseminated through the social media platform WhatsApp. This research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. The theoretical framework used is the social construction theory by Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and documentation. The data analysis process involved three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the social construction of hoax news among residents of Telaga Biru aged 35 to 65 has changed in terms of interpretation and response, influenced by their actions and interactions on WhatsApp during the 2024 election campaign. Previously, they tended to believe in and be influenced by such news, often struggling to distinguish between factual and false information. However, they have now developed a more critical mindset and are capable of verifying information before accepting or spreading it. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the dynamic relationship between local values and politics. It also serves as a reference for digital literacy efforts and public communication policies in addressing the spread of hoaxes during election campaigns. Further research is recommended to explore the community’s social construction of hoax news using other social media platforms or from different theoretical perspectives.

Abstract

The phenomenon of childfree, which is the decision not to have children in marriage, has attracted increasing attention in Indonesia because it contradicts traditional norms that regard children as a symbol of family perfection. This study aims to explore the views of students at the Islamic State University of Antasari Banjarmasin on the childfree phenomenon and examine how religious and social values shape their meanings and responses to the phenomenon. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data collection techniques used observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The results showed that UIN Antasari Banjarmasin students have an open view towards childfree choices, although there are significant differences in personal values and perceptions. Some students see childfree as a rational and personal consideration that can be accepted if it is based on careful consideration. Others view childfree as contrary to religious and social norms that emphasise the importance of procreation and family. Social media also plays an important role in disseminating information and forming opinions about childfree, but the final decision is still influenced by personal beliefs and couple agreement. Derrida's deconstruction approach is used to understand the phenomenon of childfree as the formation of new meanings in marriage and family, which challenges traditional norms and opens space for a more inclusive interpretation of individual life choices. This research provides insight into the dynamics between religious values and modernity in university students' views on childfree. Further research is recommended to explore the factors that influence the childfree decision from a gender perspective, as well as analysing the role of social media in shaping opinions about childfree.

Abstract

The performance of human resources (HR) plays a crucial role in determining the success of the company, including in the service sector such as airports. This study aims to analyse the influence of the big five personality model dimensions on employee performance in the Operations Department of PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia at Syamsudin Noor National Airport Banjarmasin. The five dimensions of personality analysed include openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. The research method used a quantitative approach with data collection techniques through a Likert scale-based questionnaire survey. The research sample totalled 48 employees, determined using the Isaac and Michael formula with an error rate of 5%. Data analysis involves classical assumption tests, such as normality test, heteroscedasticity test, and multicollinearity test, as well as hypothesis testing using multiple linear regression, partial test (T test), and coefficient of determination test. The results showed that the dimensions of openness to experience (t = 2.056, p = 0.046), conscientiousness (t = 2.899, p = 0.006), and agreeableness (t = 2.218, p = 0.032) had a significant effect on employee performance. In contrast, the dimensions of extraversion (t = -0.333, p = 0.741) and neuroticism (t = 1.029, p = 0.309) have no significant effect on employee performance. The coefficient of determination analysis showed that the regression model used was able to explain 70.6% of the variation in employee performance (R² = 0.706). The findings confirm the importance of considering personality characteristics, particularly openness to experience, conscientiousness, and agreeableness, in HRM to improve employee performance. This research provides a practical contribution to HRM in the service industry, as well as a reference for management in designing performance improvement strategies based on employee personality characteristics.

Abstract

Peatland degradation, particularly the increasing risks of fires and flooding due to climate change, necessitates transformative efforts by communities to sustain their livelihoods. This study aims to examine the social resilience of the community in Jambu Baru Village in terms of maintaining their climate-affected livelihoods. The research uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings show that climate change significantly affects the livelihoods of the Jambu Baru Village community, which relies heavily on peatland resources. Resilience is demonstrated through adaptation based on local knowledge. The community's resilience is reflected in diversifying livelihood sources, where households are not dependent on a single income source. Each family typically engages in multiple livelihood activities, such as maiwak, manggau kayu galam, manetes uwey, mamuai banyir, beje management, and others. Furthermore, community resilience is supported by strengthened social solidarity. Resilience emerges from the integration of enhanced economic adaptation, utilization of social capital, and environmental conservation, which are key to sustainable livelihoods. The community also develops local wisdom to reduce the risks of fire and flood disasters. Academically, it is recommended to conduct comparative research on community resilience across different peatland communities to further explore the forms of resilience in the face of increasingly complex climate change impacts. Practically, it is advised that communities develop innovations to produce products with higher economic value.

Abstract

Waste management in Bambangin Village, located along the riverbank, has become a major issue. To address this, a Waste Bank program was initiated as a community-based solution. This study aims to analyze the formation and sustainability of the program through the lens of community empowerment. A qualitative, descriptive approach was used, with data analyzed using an interactive model that includes data collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusion. The Waste Bank was launched by the village head in response to the village’s growing waste problem. It functioned effectively in 2023, but ceased operation in 2024 due to several challenges. The program’s collapse followed the death of the village head, the inability of the management team to continue, a lack of funding, minimal external support, and weak community commitment. The failure was also linked to poor community engagement and the absence of enabling conditions for sustainable participation. The community was not adequately equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary for independent waste management. Without practical experience in Waste Bank operations, empowerment efforts fell short. Consequently, improper waste disposal resumed, leading to environmental pollution. This research highlights key challenges and reasons behind the program’s failure, offering valuable lessons for similar initiatives in the future. Further studies should focus on developing sustainable strategies involving stakeholders, exploring funding models, and implementing effective education to boost community participation and ensure the long-term success of Waste Bank programs.

Abstract

The Old Market in Banjarmasin City is a traditional trading hub with significant historical, economic, and social value for the local community. However, the planned land acquisition in the Pasar Batuah area presents serious challenges for economic actors and residents who rely on the market for their livelihoods. This study aims to evaluate the social impacts of the land acquisition and analyze the roles and dynamics of the actors involved in the process. A qualitative descriptive approach was used, with data collected through field observations, interviews with traders, affected residents, government officials, and documentation from media and archives. The findings reveal that land acquisition produces dual impacts: on one hand, it offers opportunities for urban spatial planning and infrastructure development; on the other, it leads to economic uncertainty, loss of livelihoods, and social fragmentation, particularly due to inherited land disputes. Divergent perceptions between the government and the community contribute to tensions that affect the relocation process. Unanticipated impacts also emerged, such as increased vulnerability among marginalized groups and the erosion of community bonds within the market. Key actors, including local government, community leaders, NGOs, and the media, play a significant role in shaping & policy direction and public response. These findings highlight the need for participatory approaches in land acquisition projects to ensure that development does not compromise social sustainability. Further research should explore the socio-economic dimensions of land acquisition in traditional markets, the role of cultural identity in sustaining market communities, and inclusive policy strategies that protect the rights of affected populations.

Abstract

Amid growing social openness, the Islamic organization LDII (Lembaga Dakwah Islam Indonesia) in Banjarbaru continues to uphold endogamous marriage practices. This study aims to explore how such practices are rooted within the organization. Using a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method, the research applies Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann’s theory of social construction as its analytical framework. Data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model: data collection, reduction, presentation, and conclusion. The findings show that the social construction of endogamous marriage unfolds through three stages: (1) externalization, values are disseminated via religious gatherings, preacher guidance, and forums; (2) objectivation, teachings become institutionalized and reinforced by a Marriage Team, forming an accepted social reality; and (3) internalization, individuals embrace these values as part of their religious and moral identity. Contributing factors include parental influence, preacher roles, adherence to organizational norms, and member interactions, which collectively shape a shared consciousness that sustains the practice across generations. In conclusion, endogamous marriage within LDII functions as a strategic means of preserving organizational identity amid ongoing social change. These findings contribute to studies in the sociology of religion and family, particularly regarding marriage practices in Indonesian religious organizations.

Abstract

Amid the challenges of modernization and declining interest among younger generations in local traditions, the traditional art of masukkiri, a combination of Maulid Al-Barzanji recitation and the unique rebana percussion of the Bugis Pagatan community in Pakatellu Village, continues to be preserved as an important Islamic and cultural heritage. This study analyzes the social functions of masukkiri in promoting social integration, reinforcing religious values, and sustaining the community’s collective identity. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the research is framed by Structural Functionalism and Talcott Parsons’ AGIL scheme. Data were gathered through non-participant observation, semi-structured interviews with traditional leaders, performers, and community members, as well as documentation. Analysis was conducted using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. The findings indicate that Masukkiri serves as an integrative platform that bridges generations and social groups through shared spiritual and social experiences. It functions as a medium for transmitting religious and moral values and for cultural socialization across generations. Through the performance of Maulid Al-Barzanji accompanied by rebana in religious and traditional events, Masukkiri strengthens social cohesion and helps preserve local cultural identity. This study contributes to the sociological discourse on how traditional arts function as adaptive and dynamic systems that maintain community structure amidst changing social contexts. The preservation of masukkiri is recommended through community-based cultural education, collaboration among stakeholders, supportive policy, and digital media engagement to attract younger audiences.

Abstract

Parenting patterns are suspected to influence the consumptive behavior of KIP-Kuliah scholarship recipients at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Lambung Mangkurat University. This study aims to examine the impact of parenting on the consumptive behavior of economically disadvantaged students receiving KIP-Kuliah scholarships. It focuses on how parenting styles received since childhood affect students’ financial decision-making, particularly in managing their scholarship funds. Using a quantitative approach with a survey method, the study involved 133 KIP-Kuliah recipients from the 2023 cohort. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using simple linear regression. Results show a significant influence of parenting patterns on consumptive behavior, with a probability value of 0.000 (< 0.05) and a constant of 12.737. The regression equation is Y = 12.737 + 0.552(X) + e. Parenting patterns account for 62.4% of the variation in consumptive behavior, while 37.6% is influenced by other unexamined factors. These findings confirm that parenting plays a critical role in shaping the consumptive behavior of KIP-Kuliah students. The study offers practical insights for parents to better guide their children's spending behavior and for program administrators to provide behavioral support alongside financial aid. Future research is encouraged to adopt qualitative case studies to enrich the understanding of how parenting influences financial behavior in this context.
