Abstract

TikTok Shop has experienced rapid growth since 2021, with a projected 125 million users in Indonesia by 2024. Although it aims to facilitate shopping, its features and persuasive promotions have instead encouraged irrationally consumptive behavior. This study aims to investigate the impact of TikTok Shop usage on the consumption-related fashion behavior of female students at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Lambung Mangkurat University. A quantitative method with a correlational approach was employed, using a Likert scale to measure attitudes, perceptions, and consumptive behavior. The findings reveal that the majority of students exhibit a relatively high intensity of TikTok Shop usage, with a frequency of 3–5 times per week. Their usage is often driven by factors such as entertainment, product information, promotions, or discounts. Consumptive behaviors identified among respondents include purchasing decisions influenced by gifts, attractive packaging, and the desire to follow trends or maintain social prestige. TikTok Shop was found to have a significant impact on the consumptive fashion behavior of FISIP students, with 85 respondents displaying such tendencies. This behavior is reinforced by psychological and social motivations, such as the desire to maintain appearance and social status. It is therefore important for FISIP students to increase awareness of their consumption patterns and adopt a more mindful approach to shopping on e-commerce platforms. Future research is recommended to further explore psychological and social factors in greater depth from an academic perspective, while also offering practical recommendations for students in developing wiser consumption patterns.

Abstract

Indonesia’s advancing economic growth has driven the expansion of minimarkets such as Alfamart, which influences consumer behavior to become more consumptive. This study aims to examine the impact of minimarket presence on community consumption patterns in Nusa Indah Village, Bati-Bati District, Tanah Laut Regency. A qualitative method with a descriptive approach was employed. Data were collected through participant observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal a shift in consumption behavior from a needs-oriented pattern toward desire fulfillment following the arrival of minimarkets in Nusa Indah Village. Previously, community consumption was dominated by traditional markets characterized by bargaining interactions as part of local culture. Minimarkets, however, offer convenience, promotions, and product variety that shape consumer preferences. This phenomenon reflects a transformation in the meaning of consumption in modern society as explained by Baudrillard, where consumption is no longer based on functional needs but on symbolic values constructed through market strategies. Such change demonstrates community adaptation to the modern capitalist system, positioning consumption as an arena of meaning production. Minimarkets thus serve not only as shopping spaces but also as mediums representing social status and progress. This research contributes to understanding how community consumption patterns evolve with the rise of modern retail, and its findings can serve as a basis for local governments in formulating policies regulating minimarket expansion to ensure that modern retail growth does not weaken traditional markets and local economic actors.

Abstract

A barista is one of the coffee shop workers who frequently interacts with customers, making them an essential aspect that attracts customers to visit a coffee shop. This study aims to explore in greater depth the relationships that emerge from the interactions between baristas and coffee shop consumers. The research employs a qualitative approach to help the researcher uncover systematic findings and provide in-depth explanations. Through observation and in-depth interviews, the study illustrates how Tengah Hari Coffee develops strategies to attract customers. The findings reveal that the role of a barista in the growth of a coffee shop is highly dominant. Baristas serve as the first point of contact and often become the central element of the customer experience. Their role extends beyond merely preparing coffee; they also significantly influence the overall customer experience and play a crucial part in the success of a coffee shop. Baristas additionally employ strategies to increase sales, such as offering a complimentary cup of latte art to loyal customers. This practice, as seen at Tengah Hari Coffee, is sometimes misinterpreted by certain customers, leading to the emergence of false consciousness within the customer-barista interaction. This study contributes to a better understanding of the reciprocal relationship between baristas and consumers by offering a new perspective. To further develop this research, future scholars could analyze the phenomenon using different theoretical frameworks, allowing it to be examined from multiple perspectives

Abstract

The Alternative Universe (AU) phenomenon on Twitter reflects the growing use of social media among university students as a space for self-expression and the formation of virtual communities through fan fiction, which involves modifying storylines and characters from the originals. This study aims to explore the extent of the AU phenomenon on social media platforms, particularly: 1) Wattpad; and 2) Twitter. Social media influences the patterns of social interaction among students in the FISIP ULM. AU, as a form of digital fiction visualized through screenshots of instant messaging applications and presented in a thread format, has developed into a popular medium of self-expression among teenagers, including university students. With its diverse genres and strong narrative appeal, AU serves not only as entertainment but also as a new communication space that shapes the social dynamics of the campus digital sphere. This research employs a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method, using data collection techniques such as observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis techniques include data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that students’ involvement in AU strengthens social relations, expands digital friendship networks, and influences their thinking patterns and emotions. AU also functions as a space for experimenting with digital identity and interpreting social issues. The contribution of this study lies in providing a new understanding of AU as a medium for social interaction and self-expression in the digital era. The research recommends that future studies focus on the long-term impact of AU on students’ mental health and their relationships in real life.

Abstract

The shifting meaning of the hijab from a symbol of religiosity to a part of lifestyle and identity expression has given rise to the phenomenon of removing and re-wearing the hijab, which in turn sparks debates and new perspectives within society. This study aims to explore how female university students construct their self-concept leading to the practice of removing and re-wearing the hijab, as well as how they adapt to their social environment. Using a qualitative approach with phenomenological methods, data were collected through non-participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that students’ self-concept is shaped by a combination of personal values, physical comfort, aesthetic perception, and social norms. In practice, they adjust their appearance according to context: maintaining neatness in formal events, dressing more casually in peer groups, and constructing a certain image on social media. Social pressures emerge not only from direct interactions in their surroundings but also from comments and judgments in digital spaces. Employing Cooley’s Looking Glass Self theory, the study shows that others’ perceptions serve as a mirror that influences how students evaluate themselves and determine their appearance choices. This research contributes to sociological discussions on the dynamics of religious identity, social pressure in public spaces, and the negotiation of Muslim women’s identities within modernity. Further research is recommended to examine the phenomenon of hijab removal and re-wearing through a gender perspective, employing gender performativity theory.

Abstract

Manugal is a traditional collective farming practice that persists as a communal activity reflecting the values of social solidarity and cooperation in rice planting among the Bakumpai community in Mangkahui Village. This tradition embodies togetherness, cooperation, and a sense of shared responsibility that form the foundation of local social relations. The study aims to reveal the forms of social solidarity embedded in the practice of handep hapakat. A qualitative method with a case study approach was employed, using data collection techniques such as observation, unstructured interviews, and documentation. The findings show that handep hapakat not only functions as a joint strategy to accelerate the manugal process but also strengthens social solidarity across economic, social, and cultural identity dimensions. Mechanical solidarity is evident in the sense of kinship, trust, and moral obligation to help one another. Academically, this research suggests that future studies develop comparative analyses with similar traditions in other regions, employing multidisciplinary approaches to explore not only the social but also the economic and environmental dimensions, and testing manugal traditions through various social theories such as Durkheim’s solidarity or Dahrendorf’s conflict theory to enrich scholarly perspectives. Practically, the findings can serve as a basis for local governments, customary institutions, and communities to design programs for preserving the manugal tradition through cultural festivals or local education, while also adapting its solidarity values into modern forms of gotong royong that reinforce social cohesion.

Abstract

The phenomenon of beauty privilege refers to the social advantages gained by individuals considered physically attractive, yet it simultaneously imposes burdens and vulnerabilities, particularly on women labeled as “beautiful.” This study aims to explore the paradox of beauty privilege among female university students in Banjarmasin and to identify the forms of social pressure they experience in the process of social interaction. Using a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that beauty not only brings benefits but also entails consequences that create social burdens for women. Several participants reported experiencing competition among peers, expressed either openly or subtly through baseless remarks and even social exclusion. Women perceived as attractive are often attached to negative stereotypes, associating beauty with arrogance, lack of intelligence, or reliance solely on appearance. Furthermore, attractive women are also more vulnerable to subtle forms of violence disguised in less direct ways. This research provides insights into the paradox faced by women regarding beauty and the social pressures resulting from societal expectations of their appearance. Further research may explore how beauty bias operates in digital spaces, particularly the role of social media in creating constant surveillance of women’s bodies and lifestyles.

Abstract

The Kurir Singgang Community, also known as Babuhan Kurir, in North Barito, is a social group formed based on shared profession as couriers and a mutual interest in the world of automotive culture. Along with the passage of time and the dynamics of its members’ lives, the community has undergone significant changes in both membership composition and the forms of solidarity established. This study aims to explore how social solidarity within the Kurir Singgang community is formed, maintained, and developed, shifting from profession-based solidarity to solidarity rooted in shared interests and collective values across diverse backgrounds. A qualitative case study approach was employed, with data collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of community activities. The findings reveal a transformation from an exclusive to an inclusive character as an adaptation to the challenges of courier work and changing member identities. Social solidarity, which initially stemmed from professional commonality, has been strengthened through cooperation, mutual assistance, and emotional attachment in the community’s daily life. This process aligns with Emile Durkheim’s theory of social solidarity, illustrating the transition from mechanical to organic solidarity. While the community has managed to endure and evolve, challenges remain, including differences in commitment levels and disparities in member participation. This research contributes to the broader study of community dynamics and social change in the context of informal labor societies. Future studies are recommended to focus on aspects of community leadership, mechanisms of collective decision-making, and the role of social media in shaping and sustaining social solidarity in the digital era.

Abstract

Forests play a vital role in sustaining the lives of Indigenous communities, as seen in Haruyan Dayak Village, South Kalimantan. This study aims to examine the contestation of knowledge in the management of customary forests in the village. Using a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using the Manual Data Analysis Procedure (MDAP). The findings reveal that the people of Haruyan Dayak Village have a profound and enduring relationship with customary forests, which have long been an integral part of their lives. Their intensive interaction with nature has fostered deep spiritual and cultural attachments, reflected in traditions, cultural practices, and local beliefs that uphold forest preservation. The management of forests by the Indigenous community reflects an eco-populist paradigm, where forests are utilized as a source of livelihood while ensuring sustainability through local values and practices. This demonstrates that Indigenous communities not only depend on forests economically but are also deeply committed to their preservation. Thus, forest management rooted in local wisdom and Indigenous beliefs can serve as a sustainable model for natural resource conservation. This study contributes academically to the development of environmental sociology and political ecology, while also providing practical insights for strengthening the role of Indigenous communities in the sustainable management of customary forests and addressing related challenges. Further research is recommended to explore the sustainability of local values and Indigenous beliefs in forest management, particularly under the pressures of social, cultural, and policy changes.

Abstract

The development of Indonesia’s new capital city (IKN) in East Kalimantan is often promoted as a symbol of progress and equality; however, in reality, it generates significant marginalization. This project not only neglects the voices of local communities but also shifts their role from being subjects of development to mere objects of it. This research aims to critically explore the forms of social alienation experienced by local communities as a result of exploitative development policies. Using a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method, data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and field documentation. The findings reveal that the Paser Balik community experiences four dimensions of alienation as described by Karl Marx: alienation from the product of labor (loss of control over land and resources), alienation from the labor process (displacement of traditional economic practices), alienation from the self (disconnection from identity and spiritual ties to ancestral land), and alienation from the social environment. The analysis demonstrates that IKN development is non-inclusive, marginalizing communities from their land, work, identity, and social environment. This study offers a novel critical understanding of how IKN development generates processes of alienation for local communities, and its implications for their identity, roles, and empowerment within the context of social change and modernization. Further research could explore more deeply the role of the state and development institutions in either reinforcing or weakening the position of local communities in strategic projects, as well as examine alternative development models grounded in participation and social justice.
