The research aims to analyze two points: Madeline’s struggles in search of self-actualization in Nicola Yoon’s Everything, Everything, and Madeline’s needs in Nicola Yoon’s Everything, Everything. This study applies the psychological approach and theory of human needs by Abraham Maslow. Based on the analysis, the writer reveals that despite her limitations, Madeline yearns for love, independence, and the truth about her condition. She also meets her basic needs for physiological needs and safety needs. Through her relationship with Olly and the support of her friend Carla, Madeline finds love and belonging needs, and esteem needs. Ultimately, Madeline breaks free from her confinement, embraces her true self, and pursues a life without boundaries. This novel shows that everyone has needs and struggles, but humans can find fulfillment with determination so that their self-actualization as humans is fulfilled.

Abstract

This research is to identify the illocutionary forms produced by the English teacher in class VIII A at SMP N 1 Poso during the teaching in class. Illocutionary speech acts are utterances expressed by the teacher as a speaker to the speech partner to take action according to what is conveyed. The purpose of the research is to find out the form of illocutionary speech produced by the English teacher when she was teaching in class. The research method used is the descriptive-qualitative method. The data in this research was taken from only English utterances generated by the English teacher. The instruments used in this study were a phone recording and field notes on the utterances spoken. The researcher herself identified and collected the data findings after listening to the recordings. The findings of the data indicate that there are three forms of illocutionary produced by the English teacher: 24 times directive, 10 times expressive, and 10 times assertive. Directive speech acts are more dominantly used by the English teacher when teaching in class because directive speech acts generated by the teacher have an impact on students, and they, as a speech partner, do what is said by the speaker. Directive speech can manage and control teaching activities between teacher and students, and the teacher as a speaker can ask questions to students to make them feel more motivated and active in learning English.

Abstract

The ability to speak is one of the English language skills that must be mastered to facilitate learning. This research was motivated by the formulation of problems that occurred in the Nafi Mumtaza learning house institution which had 4 students. This study aims to improve students' speaking skills and confidence levels when speaking in English. Although the research objects are few, researchers try to use learning alternatives that are easy to apply and strongly support this research. Therefore, the researcher decided to use the storytelling method. This study used the type of Classroom Action Research (PTK) using Kemmis and Mc Taggart spiral model design learning guidelines. Learning improvement is carried out in 2 cycles and assessment is seen from the aspect of students' understanding of the story presented and the ability to convey it back in front of the class. In the cycle 1 stage, only 25%, namely 1 student, are able to achieve the minimum score of 75 and this increases in the cycle 2 stage to 50%, namely 87 and 89 if assessed with 3 categories, and reaches 100% complete achievement, namely 91 and 94 if using pure value acquisition, a comparison with absorption and ideal values. These results prove that the speaking ability of students in English learning has improved with the application of storytelling learning methods
