Abstract

This study used the Classroom Action Research method which was carried out in two cycles with the aim of determining the effectiveness of using a project-based learning model in improving the learning outcomes of science subject in the fifth-grade students of SDN-11 Palangka, Kota Palangka Raya. This study was based on observation and interview with a classroom teacher at the school where researchers found problem in student learning outcomes. One of problems is that there were still many students who have not mastered the learning material of the science subject because the average score achieved was 70.4 where this score is still below the Minimum Completeness Criteria (KKM) standardized by the school, which is 75. To solve the problem, researchers tried to use the project-based learning model as a solution. The results showed that the teacher's activity score increased from cycle I to cycle II with the achievement criteria from the category of "good" to "very good". In addition, student activities from cycle I to cycle II also increased with the achievement criteria from the category of "fairly good" to "very good". Regarding the completeness of student learning outcomes in the first cycle, it showed 65% of students reached the KKM and it increased in the second cycle to 92%. Based on the data, it can be concluded that the use of project-based learning model can improve the learning outcomes of students in the science subject of the fifth graders.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the teacher's questioning strategy in English lessons. It was conducted in classroom interaction between teacher and students of SMP Negeri 1 Mentaya Hilir Selatan, in Central Kalimantan Province. The subject of this study was an English teacher and 25 eighth grade of junior high school students. This research used a qualitative approach. Two main data collection instruments were used observation and interview. Through observation, the researcher carefully analyzed the types of teachers questioning strategies during English learning activities. In interview, researcher gain deeper insights from the teacher related with the questioning strategies used by her during teaching. The result revealed that teachers used four questioning strategies in classroom interaction, namely redirection questions, prompting questions, probing questions, and granting waiting time. Then, the result showed the prompting question strategy was the most dominant question strategy, but the teacher was still ineffective in using this strategy because the questions asked still contained many grammatical errors because the teacher sometimes used a mixture of English and Indonesian which caused students only answer briefly. This study implies that the implementation of questioning strategies by the teacher actually has the potential to increase students' activeness in learning English.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to analyze the implementation of the School Literacy Movement (GLS) Program at SDN-12 Palangka, as well as to find out the supporting and inhibiting factors during the implementation of the GLS Program. This research opted qualitative ethnopedagogical design with a descriptive method. Data collection was carried out through observation, interview, and documentation techniques. The subjects were the school principal, teacher of the second graders, students of the second graders, and parents of those students. To analyse the data, researchers used procedures from Miles and Huberman which included data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions and verification. The results showed that the implementation of GLS program for the second-grade students of SDN-12 Palangka were varied based on the adapting stage, developing stage and learning stage. In the adapting stage, the 15-minute reading activities provided a reading corner in the classroom, a cultural activity of reading and writing literacy, and a public involvement for students. In the developing stage, the activity facilitated a guided reading activity and reading togetherness for students. Then, in the learning stage it organized several literacy-based classes for learning, carried out reading and writing literacy evaluations, and built a school literacy team. The benefits of the GLS program conveyed supporting factors such as facilitating a reading corner in the classroom, learning posters, a cooperation between all school components and parental involvement. However, the program also has inhibiting factors such as the lack of varied reading books in the school library, and the negative reading habit of students where they are not familiar with reading activity.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine whether the use of picture series could improve the generic structure of students' writing, specifically their ability to write narrative texts with proper generic structure. The researcher employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-test and post-test format. The population consisted of ninth-grade students from SMP Negeri 14 Palangka Raya during the 2023/2024 academic year, comprising three classes. The sample size was 30 students from class IX-A. The research findings indicated that using picture series improved students' writing abilities in terms of generic structure, particularly in writing narrative texts. This was evidenced by the increase in students’ mean scores from 60.9 in the pre-test to 81.8 in the post-test, reflecting 20.9 points of improvement. After calculating the difference between the matched pairs, the t-test value was found to be 9.390. With a significance level (p) = 0.05 and a degree of freedom (df) = 29, the t-table value was 1.699. Since the t-test value was greater than the t-table value (9.390 > 1.699), the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted.

Abstract

Determining the main idea and supporting ideas of a text is a fundamental reading skill. The ability of students to identify the main idea and supporting details is a key aspect of Indonesian language learning in fourth grade. However, at SDN-11 Palangka, many fourth-grade students—approximately 73%—struggle with identifying the main idea and supporting ideas. Despite being an upper-grade class, these students should be capable of applying reading comprehension skills effectively. This has led researchers to conduct descriptive research aimed at identifying the difficulties, causal factors, and potential solutions to improve the learning of Indonesian. The focus of this study is on determining the main idea in reading texts for fourth-grade students at SDN-11 Palangka. The research employs a descriptive method with a qualitative approach, utilizing an interactive data analysis technique based on the Miles and Huberman model. This process involves data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The data collection methods used in this research include observation, interviews, and documentation. The results indicate that the main difficulty students face in identifying the main idea is their inadequate understanding of the material related to the main idea and supporting details. The cause of these difficulties lies in the students' reading challenges, which include a lack of fluency in reading and insufficient reading comprehension skills.

Abstract

Reading plays an important role in the development of critical thinking skill, analytical ability, and creativity. Therefore, reading interest must be cultivated from an early age so that it becomes a good habit in daily life. In fostering reading interest, the role of teachers is very crucial. Teachers must be able to create literacy programs that are interesting and in accordance with the needs of students so that their interest in reading can be increased. This study aims to determine the role of teachers in increasing students' interest in reading through reading literacy program in the elementary school level. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The subjects of this study are class V-A teachers and class V-A students at SD Muhammadiyah Pahandut Palangka Raya. The data in this study was collected through three techniques, namely observation, interviews, and documentation. Meanwhile, data analysis was carried out in three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that there are several factors that affect students' interest in reading, both supporting and inhibiting factors. Supporting factors include adequate facilities and infrastructure, attractive literacy programs, and support from teachers and schools. Inhibiting factors include low interest in reading, lack of support from family, and interference from technology. Although the literacy program has been well implemented, there are still several challenges faced, such as differences in interest and reading ability among students, limited time owned by teachers, and limited reading materials available at school.
