Abstract

For decades, the Indonesian government has tried to catch up with the development of English language teaching worldwide. This paper discusses the implementation of the communicative approach (CA) and why it is culturally incompatible in Indonesia. Having done library research, the writers first discuss the status of English language teaching in Indonesia and the development of communicative language teaching (CLT) in the world. The discussion then shifts to cultural issues hindering the implementation of CLT in Indonesia. Here, instead of suggesting major changes, the writers recommend that CLT be culturally adjusted, and English teachers who play an important role in the classroom must be able to tinker with their methods to make them appropriate to the local cultural norms. There is a pressing need to redefine the current teacher-student relationship to keep up with the prevailing cultural norms. The teachers should incorporate more student-centered activities in the classroom.

Abstract

This research aims to describe how African people’s traditional and modern beliefs in marine ecosystems as described by the author in The God of the Sea by Barakat Akinsiku (2021). This research uses ecocritical theory with descriptive-qualitative methods. The results show two differences in overcoming the marine ecological crisis: traditional belief is that they use rituals to stop flood disasters, and obtaining blessings such as the death of a baby whale is considered to fulfill people’s living needs. Furthermore, in modern belief, they use methods that educate the public about waste so that people become aware of the plastic waste that is scattered on the beach and sort out what should be recycled and what should not so that the death of a baby whale on the beach is not a blessing, but instead a disaster, the effects of the marine ecological crisis. Based on these two beliefs, the author wants to provide awareness to African governments, primarily to provide free education to African communities who live on coasts with deficient economic levels so that those who live on coasts understand the dangers of rubbish, which can damage marine ecosystems and can protect marine ecosystems for the common good.

Abstract

The acquisition and usage of phrasal verbs present significant challenges for second language (L2) learners due to their complex and idiomatic nature. This paper explores these difficulties through a multifaceted analysis of the linguistic and cognitive obstacles that phrasal verbs pose to learners. The study examines the study's participants, which can lead to misunderstandings and misinterpretations. The paper delves into the learners’ competence levels and other issues affecting their ability to grasp phrasal verbs, which often affects their competence and performance in this area of English grammar. The paper also discusses the pedagogical approaches that have helped to facilitate the learners’ learning of phrasal verbs, such as contextual learning, teachers’ ability, corpora, and technology-based tools. The research findings underscore the importance of innovative teaching strategies and continuous practice for L2 learners to effectively navigate the linguistic labyrinth of phrasal verbs. By identifying key challenges and potential solutions, this paper contributes valuable insights into the complexities of language acquisition and offers practical recommendations for educators and learners alike. Ultimately, it aims to enhance our understanding of the intricate relationship between language, culture, and cognition in the context of L2 learning.

Abstract

Effective nurse-patient communication is essential for providing high-quality healthcare and ensuring patient safety and satisfaction. Proficiency in English is crucial for nurses to effectively interact with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals. However, many nurses face challenges in using correct grammar and language, which can impact communication and care delivery. This paper explores the relevance of English proficiency in nurse-patient communication, examines the grammar challenges nurses face, and suggests potential strategies to overcome these challenges. A total of 35 student-nurses were randomly selected from the Post Basic Nursing Anesthesia (PBNA) and Peri-Operative Nursing (PON) program at JUTH. The study adopted a mixed-methods research design, combining both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods. Among other challenges, the study discovered that nurses face problems in the areas of tenses, choice of words, sentence construction, and patients’ poor grasp of English. The study suggests that language training and support, and continuous professional development, etc. can help improve the communication among nurses and with patients. The study thus concludes that proficiency in English and proper grammar usage are essential for effective nurse-patient communication, and overcoming language and grammar challenges can improve patient safety, satisfaction, and healthcare outcomes.

Abstract

Cities and literature have a very close relationship. It can be seen from the number of cities that are the primary inspiration for authors in creating literary works. One literary work that tells the story of a city is the short story (Hidup) Matinya Sebuah Kota by Raudal Tanjung Banua. As the title suggests, this short story tells a lot about the state of cities worldwide and in Indonesia. Two of the many cities in East Kalimantan are described in the short story: Balikpapan and Samarinda City. This research discusses the description of the two cities represented in the short story. This research uses representation theory with interpretation analysis as the data analysis technique. The result of this research is that the short story shows that Samarinda is facing various problems, such as an increasingly crowded environment and being vulnerable to floods. On the other hand, Balikpapan is depicted as a city that is developing in an organized and reasonable way. It has caused Balikpapan to become the administrative center, replacing the role of Samarinda. All of this is evidence that the dynamics of the development of cities are only sometimes stable and can change or be replaced over time.

Abstract

The article’s purpose is to examine the prevalence of sexuality in Gaston Leroux’s The Phantom of the Opera by analyzing the impacts of the characters’ background/milieu on their sexuality, how sexuality is illustrated in The Phantom of the Opera, and how social and moral constructs influence the characters’ expression of sexuality. The researchers utilized Content Analysis and Psychodynamics. The results revealed that Christine’s excessive influence of male presence during childhood made her a masculine woman while Raoul’s excessive influence of female presence made him an effeminate man. Christine’s and Raoul’s respective traits balance each other; however, the existing social and moral constructs regulate their behaviors to express their sexualities. On the other hand, Erik’s lack  of masculine and feminine traits and key figures to follow hindered his development of morals and sexuality. Understanding the significance of the characters’ background and milieu in shaping their sexuality as illustrated in Gaston Leroux’s literary work urges readers and students to redefine the quality of the relationships they established.

Abstract

This study is conducted to determine the story of Carmen based on the lens of local. Narrative Inquiry is used to make the participants tell the story rather than answer the questions given. The study tackles the people connected to Carmen, places she had been, conflict in the story and themes and message that can be derived using Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Sigmund Freud’s Psychosexual Stage. In the beginning, Carmen’s basic needs are met since she’s part of a rich family with everything provided for her. But despite her material wealth, she’s lacking emotional connection and love. She feels isolated and longs to belong. Carmen’s desire for love and intimacy clashes with her family’s expectations and societal norms. She’s torn between her desires and the need for esteem and acceptance from her family. Her story teaches us to balance our desires with societal expectations and not to neglect our emotional needs for the sake of material wealth and status. Also, this study aims to preserve the story for future generations and promote tourism in Cadiz City.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the themes and thematic alignment in the short stories Cut Vi and Sebab Aku Cinta, Sebab Aku Angin from Helvy Tiana Rosa's anthology Juragan Haji. This research employs a qualitative approach, aiming to describe and interpret the collected data. The data consist of quoted dialogues, sentences, and paragraphs. These data were gathered using reading and note-taking methods. The findings of this study reveal both major and minor themes, as well as a thematic alignment between the two stories. The aligned major themes are tragedy and humanitarian action, while the aligned minor themes are the love and spirituality of the characters within the stories.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the dynamics of the bourgeoisie through the character of Coriolanus Snow in Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and its film adaptation. Utilizing a qualitative comparative method, the research applies Marxist social class theory to analyze how Snow’s character reflects and critiques bourgeois ideologies in both the novel and the movie. The data were collected through textual and cinematic analysis, focusing on Snow’s socio-economic background, interactions, and personal transformation. The study highlights how internal narration in the novel and visual representation in the film construct different emphases on class struggle, power ambition, and ideological control. The findings reveal substantial differences in character development and thematic focus, illustrating how literature and film uniquely represent class hierarchies within a dystopian society.

Abstract

The objectives of this research include describing the mystical content of the Wewe Gombel ghost story, which is believed by the people of Kaliputih Wonosobo Village, Central Java, and Abuh Ghost that is believed by the people of Bantansari Silat Hulu Village, West Kalimantan, and comparing the pedagogical content contained in the two ghost stories in the two areas. The research method is qualitative with ethnographic techniques. The data source comes from the speech of the people of Bantansari Village, Silat Hulu, West Kalimantan, and the speech of the people of Kaliputih Village, Wonosobo, Central Java. Data collection techniques are carried out by interviews and documentation. The results of the study showed that there was a pedagogical content in the story of the ghost of Wewe Gombel which was believed by the people of Wonoso, Central Java, and the story of the ghost of Abuh which was believed by the people of Silat Hulu, West Kalimantan. These two ghost stories have pedagogical content in the form of invitations and invitations for children to obey parental advice. The educational value behind this ghost story is the attitude teaching which is spoken along with the ghost story that develops in society.
