Abstract

This study was conducted to analyze the effectiveness of the SQ3R method (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review) in improving university students’ academic reading comprehension and to identify the factors influencing its implementation in learning activities. The research applied a quantitative approach with a descriptive analytical design. Data were collected through a closed-ended questionnaire based on a Likert scale distributed to 22 students. The research instrument consisted of 20 statements covering reading comprehension, concentration, memory retention, learning effectiveness, and the ease of using the SQ3R method. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, and mean scores. The results indicated that most respondents gave positive responses toward the implementation of the SQ3R method. The method was considered effective in helping students better understand academic texts, identify main ideas, improve reading focus, strengthen memory retention, and support learning effectiveness. The stages of SQ3R encouraged students to read more actively, systematically, and purposefully compared to conventional reading methods. Furthermore, students showed a high level of interest in continuing to apply the method in their academic activities. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of the SQ3R method was also influenced by several factors, such as reading interest, study habits, learning environment, and students’ individual abilities. Therefore, the SQ3R method can be used as an alternative reading strategy to improve students’ academic literacy skills.

Abstract

This study examines the use of slang words in How to Train Your Dragon (2010). Slang represents an informal language variety that reflects emotions, identity, and social relationships in everyday communication. This study aims to identify the types of slang used by the characters and analyze their meanings based on Allan and Burridge’s theory of slang and Leech’s theory of meaning. A descriptive qualitative method was employed using the movie dialogues and transcript as the data source. Data were collected by repeatedly watching the movie, examining the transcript, identifying slang expressions, and analyzing their contexts. The findings indicate that the characters use various types of slang, with imitative slang occurring most frequently, followed by clipping, fresh and creative, and flippant slang. Regarding meaning, the slang expressions predominantly convey social, affective, connotative, conceptual, thematic, and reflective meanings depending on the conversational context and interpersonal relationships. The study concludes that slang functions not only as informal language but also as a means of expressing emotions, creating humor, strengthening solidarity, and constructing character identity. The findings also demonstrate that contextual factors play a crucial role in interpreting slang and contribute to the authenticity and realism of the movie’s dialogues.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the problems faced by Business Administration students in mastering English language skills. English proficiency is an important competency that Business Administration students must possess to support academic and professional needs in the era of globalization. However, many students still encounter various difficulties in learning English. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The participants consisted of 30 fourth-semester Business Administration students. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis followed the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that students experienced difficulties in speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar. The most dominant problems were limited vocabulary mastery, lack of self-confidence in speaking, difficulties in understanding English conversations, pronunciation errors, and weak grammatical competence. The factors influencing these problems were categorized into internal and external factors. Internal factors included low learning motivation, lack of self-confidence, and limited vocabulary, while external factors included limited opportunities to practice English, lack of a supportive English-speaking environment, and less varied teaching methods. The study concludes that difficulties in mastering English skills remain a significant challenge for Business Administration students. Therefore, improvements are needed through more communicative learning approaches, continuous practice, and a supportive learning environment.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the need to understand the change of morphophenmics as well as changes in the meaning of the confix in popular digital literature. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to describe in detail the characteristics of the confiscism of the fine in the wattage of the work entitled the Land of Baghdad by the Diamond Kimberly, with a focus on the rules of sound change, the way of word formation, and its grammatical meaning. The data in the study was taken from the digital corpus on Wattpad on the story of the Land of Baghdad, which was analyzed using distribution methods and paraphrases. The findings from this study show the presence of three rules of sound change when the confix is used in the word polymorphemy, with identified alomorphism including ke-yan, ke-wan, and psy. From the point of view of the grammatical function, the confix is proven to have derivasional and inflectional properties. Meanwhile, in terms of grammatical meaning, this confix is able to express the five main meanings, namely describing abstract properties and states, secondary meaning or visual appearance, conditions caused by accident, intensity of excess, and meaning related to a particular process, subject, or event. It is hoped that the results of this study can enrich the study of Indonesian morphology, especially in mapping the development of phonological distribution and semantic dynamics of the confse and conjecture in modern literary languages.

Abstract

The low interest of the younger generation in traditional crafts threatens the preservation of Nusantara textiles. A study entitled "Analysis of the Pattern of Traditional Weaving Heritage Transmission Among the Young Generation in Tenun Village, Pringgasela, East Lombok" aims to map the patterns of weaving skill transfer while identifying structural obstacles in the field. Through a descriptive qualitative method with a case study scheme, data were collected through participatory observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews with craftsmen across generations. The study results reveal that the transmission of cognitive knowledge is effective through the integration of passive enculturation in domestic spaces and non-formal community training. Nonetheless, the sustainability of this tradition is threatened by economic disincentives due to the low wages of Sesek cloth, which are uncompetitive with the modern sector, triggering young weavers to migrate as laborers after marriage. The implications of this research urge a total reform of the traditional craftsmen development pattern through strengthening the creative economy ecosystem and accelerating digital marketing literacy. This strategy is crucial to reduce the dominance of middlemen, increase partners' income, and foster the organic motivation of Gen Z in preserving Sasak cultural heritage.

Abstract

Japanese drama One Liter of Tears (2005), adapted from the real diary of Kitou Aya, succeeded in changing how many people in Japan and Asia understand disability. This paper takes a slightly different angle: not from Aya's own experience, but from how her family and people around her viewed, responded to, and adjusted to the presence of disability in their lives. Using the medical and social models of disability, as well as concepts of care and burden, this study analyzes how the drama constructs the disability experience from the perspective of those closest to Aya. The results show that the drama does portray the family's emotional journey from denial, overwhelm, to eventual acceptance. But beneath that, it also unconsciously reinforces stereotypes about the ideal disabled person: obedient, stoic, heroic, and never complaining. Although successful in moving audiences to tears, the representation remains trapped in the medical model paradigm that treats disability as Aya's personal problem, rather than a social issue that needs collective fixing.

Abstract

This study examines the acoustic production of English vowel contrasts by native Mandailing speakers through a sociophonetic lens, exploring how first-language background and gender shape pronunciation patterns. Data were collected via a reading task involving targeted English vowel pairs (/ɪ–iː/, /ʊ–uː/, /æ–e/, and /ʌ–uː/), which were recorded and acoustically analyzed using Praat software to measure first (F1) and second (F2) formant frequencies alongside vowel duration. The results demonstrate that while Mandailing speakers recognize distinct English vowel categories and attempt to separate them, they exhibit restricted vowel space and overlapping acoustic distributions compared to native standards. Notably, the male participant displayed reduced acoustic distance in tongue placement for front vowels and inverted duration patterns for back vowels. Conversely, the female speaker maintained more native-like vowel quality distinctions but showed reliance on adjusted temporal boundaries. These structured variations confirm that unfamiliar target language categories are dynamically integrated into the speaker's native phonological framework. Ultimately, the study highlights how entrenched regional speech practices and social variables actively systematicize non-native phonetic execution.

Abstract

Advances in digital technology and globalization have opened up new communication spaces that shape the way Generation Z speaks, who not only play the role of language users but also as creators and spreaders of new vocabulary or neologisms. This research aims to recognize, classify, and examine the phenomenon of neologisms in Generation Z slang on the TikTok and X platforms through a descriptive qualitative approach with free tapping and watching techniques. Different from previous studies that generally only focused on one type of neologism or one specific platform, the novelty of this research lies in the analysis of various types of neologisms simultaneously from two platforms at once so as to produce a more comprehensive picture of the dynamics of the formation of new vocabulary in digital communication. The results of the analysis found four patterns of neologism formation that are actively used, namely absorption from foreign languages, abbreviations and acronyms, syllable reversals, and shifts in meaning, all of which follow systematic morphological rules as reflected in words such as roasting, mager, gercep, mantul, kuy, sultan, and gas. This study concludes that Generation Z slang is an expression of linguistic creativity born from the need for identity and social solidarity in the digital era, while emphasizing that social media has become a linguistic arena that accelerates the spread of neologisms as part of the face of the Indonesian language that continues to develop dynamically in today's digital space.

Abstract

This study aims to describe conversational implicatures found in the utterances of characters in the film Penyalin Cahaya directed by Wregas Bhanuteja. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with a pragmatic analysis method. The data consist of utterances containing conversational implicatures, collected through observation and note-taking techniques by repeatedly watching the film and recording dialogues relevant to the research focus. The collected data were then analyzed using the distributional method to identify forms of utterances, supported by contextual analysis to interpret the implied meanings within the conversations. The results show that the characters’ utterances in the film contain various forms of conversational implicature used to convey meaning indirectly. These implicatures arise based on situational context, relationships between characters, and events underlying the conversations. Furthermore, implicatures reflect social dynamics in character interactions, such as doubt, rejection, pressure, and self-protection efforts. Therefore, this study demonstrates that the use of conversational implicature in film plays an important role in delivering implicit messages and strengthening the meaning conveyed in dialogue.
