Abstract

The succession of the Tu'a Golo constitutes an essential component of the indigenous leadership system of the Manggarai community, which is regulated by customary law and preserved through generations. In 2024, the succession process in Gendang Warat generated controversy because the transfer of leadership from the eldest lineage to a younger sibling's lineage was perceived as inconsistent with established customary norms. This study aims to analyze the requirements and succession process of the Tu'a Golo and to examine its implications for the indigenous community of Gendang Warat. This research employed an empirical legal method with a descriptive qualitative approach. Primary data were collected through interviews with the Tu'a Golo, customary leaders, community leaders, and indigenous community members, while secondary data were obtained through a literature review. The findings reveal that the succession of the Tu'a Golo is primarily based on patrilineal genealogy, customary knowledge, moral integrity, leadership capacity, and collective recognition through customary deliberation (Lonto Leok). However, the 2024 succession did not fully comply with customary provisions, resulting in differing interpretations, weakened leadership legitimacy, declining public trust in customary institutions, and social tensions within the community. Strengthening adherence to customary procedures and participatory deliberation is therefore essential to preserve leadership legitimacy, social harmony, and the continuity of Manggarai customary law.

Abstract

This research aims to examine criminal liability for perpetrators of online prostitution in Aceh because the practice of online prostitution is currently carried out covertly because Aceh is a province that has special features in terms of implementing Islamic law, but in the practice of law enforcement against online prostitution crimes there are no regulations that can ensnare PSK, even though prostitutes are subjects who are directly involved in online prostitution crimes. This type of research uses an empirical juridical approach. The results of the research show that the regulation of the subject of offenses in online prostitution crimes is still not comprehensive, based on an investigation of norms, the regulatory focus in the Criminal Code is only on pimps and pimps, as well as in the ITE Law and the Pornography Law which focuses on social media content that can be disseminated, So there is no regulation that clearly states that commercial sex workers are the subject of offenses in conventional or online prostitution crimes. The handling of online prostitution cases carried out by wilayatul hisbah is by applying the ikhtilath and khalwath articles against perpetrators of online prostitution.

Abstract

College students are frequently exposed to psychological pressure stemming from heavy academic workloads and intense grade competition. This study aims to examine the correlation between perceived social support and academic stress, while exploring disparities in stress levels based on student demographic profiles in Indonesia. Utilizing a quantitative correlational and comparative design, data were gathered from 1,062 participants through convenience sampling. The research employed the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and the Educational Stress Scale for Adolescents (ESSA), with data analyzed using Spearman’s rho correlation and non-parametric difference tests. The findings indicate a significant but very weak negative relationship between perceived social support and academic stress (r = -0.119;p = 0.001). Descriptive data revealed that 53.62% of respondents experienced high academic stress despite reporting strong social support. Comparative analysis showed significantly higher stress levels among non-scholarship students, overseas students dealing with homesickness, those involved solely in academic activities, and students living with grandparents. These results suggest that academic stress is a multifaceted phenomenon influenced not only by external support systems but also by internal determinants such as self-efficacy, self-esteem, and self-regulation skills.

Abstract

Writing ability is a crucial skill in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning; however, many vocational high school students still experience difficulties in developing ideas, organizing texts, using appropriate vocabulary, and applying grammatical structures in descriptive writing. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Personal Journal Writing on vocational high school students’ descriptive writing achievement and to examine its contribution to students’ ability to organize ideas, use vocabulary, and apply grammatical structures. This research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test control group design. The participants were 50 eleventh-grade students at SMK Al Azmi Seidadap, North Sumatra, Indonesia, consisting of an experimental group and a control group, each comprising 25 students. Data were collected through descriptive writing tests and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Shapiro–Wilk normality test, Levene’s test, and an independent-samples t-test using IBM SPSS Statistics. The results revealed that the experimental group showed a higher improvement in writing achievement, with the mean score increasing from 59.88 in the pre-test to 81.96 in the post-test, while the control group improved from 59.84 to 66.84. The independent-samples t-test indicated a statistically significant difference between the two groups (t(48) = 9.376, p < .001). These findings demonstrate that Personal Journal Writing significantly improves students’ descriptive writing ability by supporting idea development, vocabulary enrichment, text organization, and grammatical accuracy. Therefore, Personal Journal Writing is recommended as an effective learner-centered strategy for enhancing EFL writing instruction in vocational high schools.

Abstract

The Kaiak Basuah Tangan Nukup Lubang tradition in Maras Jauh Village, Seluma Regency, is a cultural heritage to welcome the birth of a baby. This tradition not only functions as a ceremonial activity, but also serves as a means of instilling social and spiritual values for the formation of community morals. This study aims to examine the meaning and social and Islamic values contained in its implementation. This study has used a descriptive qualitative approach based on a cultural approach. Data collection in this study was conducted through direct observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The research sample focused on key informants who had been determined through a snowballing technique, namely traditional midwives (piawang), traditional leaders, religious leaders, and community elements supporting the tradition in Maras Jauh Village. This study has found three key findings. First, this tradition has contained strong social values, such as the practice of mutual cooperation, solidarity, togetherness, and care. Second, the implementation of this tradition also contains essential religious values, including strengthening faith, self-purity (taharah), prayer, and gratitude to God. Third, the practice of the Nukup Lubang tradition demonstrates a harmonious integration of local Serawai customs and Islamic teachings. The Nukup Lubang tradition plays a significant role in transmitting cultural values, fostering character, and strengthening religious identity. Consequently, support for the preservation of this tradition strengthens social cohesion and ensures local wisdom remains relevant to the dynamics of modern development.

Abstract

This study addresses the issue of Cosmetology and Beauty students failing to complete their studies on schedule. It investigates the influence of self-regulation on the motivation to graduate on time, employing a quantitative, causal-associative method. A sample of 90 respondents was selected from the total population. Data analysis involved reliability, validity, and chi-square tests. The findings reveal that 47% of students demonstrated a moderate level of self-regulation, while 41% showed a moderate level of motivation to graduate on time. The chi-square test confirmed the influence of self-regulation on the motivation to graduate on time. Consequently, the study concludes that self-regulation is a crucial factor in the motivation to graduate on schedule. Students are therefore advised to enhance their self-regulation skills—such as goal setting, time management, monitoring academic progress, and self-control—throughout their studies. Additionally, the study program is encouraged to provide support through academic coaching, guidance, and mentoring initiatives designed to strengthen students' self-regulation and thereby boost their motivation to graduate on time.

Abstract

Academic stress is a common issue faced by university students due to high academic and nonacademic demands. This study aimed to identify differences in academic stress levels based on gender and student activity. A comparative quantitative approach was used, involving 1,062 diploma and undergraduate students in Indonesia selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using the Educational Stress Scale for Adolescents (ESSA) through an online questionnaire in April 2026. Normality test results showed the data were not normally distributed, so nonparametric tests were used for hypothesis testing. The Friedman test showed a significant difference in mean rank between gender and student activity variables (p = 0.001), supporting the research hypothesis. Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests on other demographic characteristics also showed significant differences in academic stress based on scholarship status, migrant status, activity type, semester, cumulative grade point average, living arrangement, and post-graduation orientation. Students who focused solely on coursework tended to report the highest academic stress, while students who studied while running a business reported the lowest. These findings confirm that academic stress is multifactorial and offer implications for universities to design student wellbeing programs that account for diverse demographic characteristics.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dynamics of political and environmental conflicts in the development of the Ropa Coal-Fired Power Plant (PLTU Ropa) in Maurole District, Ende Regency, and to identify the factors influencing conflicts among the local community, the government, and the company. Although the construction of PLTU Ropa was intended to support electricity supply and regional development, its implementation has generated various social, political, and environmental issues that have led to prolonged conflicts within the community. This research employed a qualitative approach using a descriptive research design. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, and were analyzed using Ralf Dahrendorf's Conflict Theory, which emphasizes unequal distribution of power and authority as the primary source of social conflict. The findings indicate that the conflict originated from two major issues, namely land acquisition and environmental impacts resulting from the plant's operation. Political conflict emerged due to the community's dissatisfaction with the land acquisition process, which was perceived as lacking transparency, public participation, and fairness in compensation. Environmental conflict was driven by air pollution caused by coal dust and fly ash, which affected environmental quality, agricultural productivity, fisheries, and public health. The factors influencing the conflict include unequal power relations, weak communication and transparency, limited community participation in decision-making, and differing interests between economic development and environmental protection. The study concludes that resolving the conflict requires strengthening dialogue among stakeholders, improving transparency, and enhancing public participation to achieve a more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable development process.
