Abstract

Depression is a common psychological problem experienced by the elderly and often arises due to physical changes, social limitations, and medical conditions that accompany the aging process. This disorder reflects uncomfortable emotional experiences. This study aims to review the effectiveness of reminiscence therapy in reducing depressive symptoms in the elderly through a literature review approach. The method used was a literature review by examining five indexed scientific articles retrieved from the PubMed, Wiley, and Frontiers databases, published within the last five years. The results indicate that reminiscence therapy can reduce levels of depression and anxiety, increase cognitive capacity, strengthen self-esteem, and support the quality of life of the elderly through the activity of remembering and sharing meaningful experiences. Overall, this review demonstrates that reminiscence therapy is an effective and holistic non-pharmacological approach to improving the mental health of the elderly.

Abstract

Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) remains a major public health problem among children under five years old, particularly in coastal areas characterized by relatively homogeneous environmental and behavioral conditions. Dense settlements, substandard housing environments, and a high prevalence of risk behaviors are assumed to increase ARI incidence; however, empirical evidence explaining how these risk factors operate within homogeneous coastal communities and how prevention programs influence epidemiological findings remains limited. This study aimed to analyze risk factors associated with ARI among under-five children in the coastal area of Wonokerto Kulon Village, Pekalongan Regency, and to explore the implementation of ARI prevention programs at the primary health care level. A case–control study design was employed using a mixed-methods sequential explanatory approach. The quantitative phase included 38 children under five, consisting of 19 ARI cases and 19 controls selected through consecutive sampling. Bivariate analysis was conducted using Fisher’s exact test to examine associations between individual child factors, physical housing environment, and family behavioral factors with ARI incidence. The qualitative phase involved in-depth interviews with key informants from the primary health center and was analyzed thematically to contextualize the quantitative findings. The results showed no statistically significant associations between individual child characteristics, physical housing conditions, or family behaviors and ARI incidence (p > 0.05). Qualitative findings indicated that risk factor exposure in the coastal community was widespread and relatively uniform, while ARI prevention programs were implemented but constrained by structural limitations and persistent risk behaviors. This study concludes that homogeneous exposure to risk factors limits their role as individual-level determinants of ARI, suggesting that prevention efforts in coastal areas should prioritize community-based interventions and collective environmental improvements rather than individual-focused approaches.

Abstract

The smoking problem is one of the significant global health challenges, with a tobacco epidemic in Indonesia. A concerning phenomenon at present is the increasing prevalence of smoking among adolescents, as well as the growing popularity of electronic cigarets or vapes as a supposedly safer alternative. The purpose of this study is to analyze the determinants of electronic smoking behavior in adolescents using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) approach. The research method for this study is a Systematic Literature Review, which utilizes databases including PubMed, Google Scholar, and published journals. This research is taken from sources from the last 10 years and was conducted in November-December 2025. The results of this study indicate that e-cigarette smoking behavior in adolescents is significantly influenced by the three main components of the TPB: attitude toward the behavior, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. The main conclusion is the need for a comprehensive strategy that involves strengthening the role of families, educating about health hazards, and implementing stricter smoke-free zone regulations and advertising restrictions to protect the future health of adolescents.

Abstract

This meta-analysis evaluates the effectiveness of digital mental health interventions in post-conflict regions of the Middle East by synthesizing findings from 47 studies (N = 8,427) published between 2015 and 2024. Using a random-effects model, the results demonstrate that digital interventions consistently produce significant reductions in symptoms of PTSD (g = 0.82, 95% CI [0.74, 0.90], p < .001), depression (g = 0.76, 95% CI [0.68, 0.84], p < .001), and anxiety (g = 0.71, 95% CI [0.63, 0.79], p < .001). Moderator analyses show that mobile application–based interventions (g = 0.88) outperform web-based platforms (g = 0.69). The optimal duration falls within the 8 to 12 week range (g = 0.85) with a retention rate of 76.4 percent. These findings confirm Maalouf et al.'s (2019) argument about the accessibility of digital technologies in conflict settings, yet indicate stronger effects for mobile interventions than those reported by Kamali et al. (2020). In contrast to the meta-analysis by Al Dweik et al. (2024), which examined general interventions, this study identifies the specific effectiveness of artificial intelligence–driven personalized treatment (g = 0.91) and encrypted peer-to-peer support (g = 0.87). The results reinforce that digital interventions can serve as a strategic alternative when conventional mental health services are difficult to access.

Abstract

Autoimmune diseases are immune system disorders characterized by an abnormal immune response that attacks the body’s own tissues and may involve multiple organ systems, including the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. This condition can significantly reduce quality of life, particularly in adolescent females who are at higher risk, especially when accompanied by a history of undernutrition. This study aimed to comprehensively examine an autoimmune disease affecting the musculoskeletal and nervous systems in an adolescent female with a history of poor nutritional status. A qualitative case study approach was employed using in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed through thematic analysis to explore the relationship between nutritional status, dietary patterns, supplementation, and clinical manifestations. The findings revealed that a history of undernutrition contributed to the severity of autoimmune symptoms, including bone pain, joint stiffness, gait disturbances, and neurological complaints. This study concludes that nutritional status plays a crucial role in the progression of autoimmune diseases, highlighting the importance of appropriate nutritional interventions, personalized dietary management, and a holistic approach in managing autoimmune conditions in adolescents.

Abstract

Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of disability and death worldwide, particularly in the elderly with established cardiovascular risk factors. Atrial fibrillation is a key risk factor, which can trigger ischemic embolic stroke due to the formation of a cardiogenic thrombus. This article reports a case of ischemic stroke in a 74 year old male patient who presented with right limb weakness and speech impairment three days prior to admission. Clinical examination revealed right hemiplegia accompanied by aphasia. A CT scan of the head revealed an ischemic infarction in the left middle cerebral artery. Electrocardiography confirmed atrial fibrillation as the source of the embolism. Furthermore, the patient was found to have severe anemia due to upper gastrointestinal bleeding, which exacerbated his clinical condition. Management was supportive and comprehensive, taking into account his neurological, cardiovascular, and systemic complications. This case report emphasizes the importance of early risk factor detection and a multidisciplinary approach in patients with complex ischemic stroke.

Abstract

Keratitis is an inflammatory condition of the cornea that may lead to permanent visual impairment if not promptly and adequately treated. It remains a significant ocular health problem, particularly in developing countries and among individuals with occupational exposure to environmental hazards. Objective: This case report aims to describe the clinical presentation, diagnostic approach, management, and prognosis of keratitis oculi sinistra in a middle-aged male patient with occupational risk factors. Methods: A descriptive case report was conducted on a 50-year-old male who presented with unilateral ocular redness, pain, tearing, photophobia, and blurred vision. Data were obtained through comprehensive anamnesis, physical examination, and detailed ophthalmologic evaluation, including visual acuity assessment and slit-lamp examination. Findings: Ophthalmologic examination revealed decreased visual acuity in the left eye, conjunctival hyperemia, ciliary injection, blepharospasm, and a grayish-white corneal infiltrate with well-defined borders, consistent with keratitis. The patient had a history of frequent exposure to dust and ultraviolet radiation due to his occupation as a fisherman and lacked the use of protective eyewear. Management included topical broad-spectrum antibiotics, topical corticosteroids, systemic analgesics, vitamin supplementation, and patient education. The clinical response was favorable, with an overall prognosis considered cautiously good. Implications: This case highlights the importance of early recognition and appropriate management of keratitis to prevent serious complications such as corneal ulceration and vision loss. Occupational eye protection, patient education, and timely treatment play crucial roles in improving clinical outcomes and preserving visual function.

Abstract

Hemodialysis is the primary life-sustaining therapy for patients with end-stage Chronic Kidney Disease. However, the complex burden of therapy has the potential to affect quality of life. The relationship between HD duration and quality of life still shows inconsistent results, warranting further investigation. This observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design involved 99 HD patients at Sultan Agung Islamic Hospital, Semarang. Sampling was conducted using consecutive sampling. HD duration data were collected from medical records, and quality of life was measured using the KDQOL-SF™ questionnaire. Data analysis used descriptive statistics and the Gamma correlation test. Most respondents were aged 51–70 years, female, had elementary school education, and worked as farmers. Analysis revealed a significant and positive relationship between the duration of HD and quality of life. Patients with an HD duration of more than 24 months tended to have a better quality of life compared to those with a duration of less than 12 months. The duration of hemodialysis has a strong positive correlation with the quality of life of CKD patients. This finding indicates that patient adaptation to the disease and therapy improves over time. Intensive support interventions are recommended for new patients to accelerate the adaptation process during the initial phase of therapy.
