Abstract

This community service program aimed to strengthen the English language skills of ustaz at Pondok Pesantren Darul Falah, Mataram City, West Nusa Tenggara, as part of a strategic effort to transform the pesantren into a bilingual institution. The program was conducted over three months (January–March 2024) using a participatory empowerment approach and practical pedagogy, involving 20 ustaz as active partners. The program's stages included a needs analysis through diagnostic tests and interviews, interactive training covering listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, workshops for developing bilingual teaching materials, microteaching practice sessions with peer feedback, and evaluation through pre-tests, post-tests, and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). The evaluation results showed a significant increase in the average score from 42.5 to 74.2. The ustaz also reported feeling more confident in using simple English expressions during teaching, and several took the initiative to create bilingual materials. The program had indirect impacts on students, who began to hear and use basic English vocabulary in daily learning contexts. Overall, this program demonstrates that a participatory empowerment model can effectively enhance ustaz’ competencies, foster a collaborative learning culture, and support the development of a bilingual pesantren that remains rooted in Islamic values. Looking ahead, the program is expected to serve as a replicable model for other pesantren and help strengthen their readiness to compete in a globalized era.

Abstract

Digital transformation presents a major challenge for MSME actors in Meureubo Subdistrict, Aceh Barat, where most businesses still rely on conventional methods. This community service program aimed to enhance digital literacy and online marketing skills, helping MSMEs become more adaptable and competitive in the digital era. The program adopted a community-based service and participatory training approach, involving 30 MSME owners from the culinary, handicraft, and service sectors. Activities included a four-day intensive training covering digital marketing (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp Business), e-commerce fundamentals (Shopee, Tokopedia), and digital financial management, delivered through group discussions, simulations, and hands-on practice. This was followed by one month of mentoring to support practical application in each participant’s business. Data were collected through questionnaires (pre- and post-test), participatory observation, and semi-structured interviews, and analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic coding. The results showed significant improvements: ownership of marketplace accounts increased by 59% (from 28% to 87%), use of business social media rose by 55% (from 35% to 90%), and participants’ confidence in managing digital accounts grew by 45% (from 25% to 70%). In-depth interviews also revealed an average revenue increase of 10–20% within two weeks after training, driven by more targeted digital promotions and the confidence to try live streaming features. Beyond technical skills, the program fostered a culture of collaboration and a shared awareness of the importance of digitalization. This participatory, practice-based training model proved effective in supporting MSME digital transformation and can be replicated in other areas with similar contexts.

Abstract

This community service activity aimed to increase the enthusiasm of children in Naman Jahe Village for learning to recite the Qur’an through a joyful and interactive approach. Initial observations revealed that the Qur’an learning sessions at Masjid Raya Naman Jahe were monotonous and less engaging, highlighting the need for innovative teaching methods suited to the characteristics of early childhood learners. The method employed was Participatory Action Research (PAR), involving 13 students from various faculties of IAIN Lhokseumawe. The core program, Bimbel Ceria, was conducted over 40 days in 20 sessions, held every afternoon following Qur’an and Iqra’ lessons. The activities integrated general subjects such as mathematics and Arabic language with religious content using playful methods, quizzes, and ice-breaking games. Data were collected through direct observation, informal interviews, and activity documentation, and were analyzed thematically and narratively. The results showed an increase in children’s participation from 85% in the first week to 100% in the final week. Children demonstrated positive behavioral changes, such as arriving earlier, asking questions actively, and showing high learning motivation. Community response was overwhelmingly positive, with strong support from the mosque’s nazir and parents for the program’s continuation. The discussion indicates that the joyful and interactive approach effectively fosters learning motivation in early childhood, strengthens religious literacy, and positions the mosque as a community-based educational center. This program can be replicated in other villages with similar characteristics as a model for inclusive and engaging Islamic education.

Abstract

Gampong Teungoh Village, located in Meurah Mulia Subdistrict, North Aceh, has experienced a decline in community income due to damaged irrigation systems that hinder agricultural activities during the dry season. This condition has prompted some residents to shift toward home-based businesses (home industry) as an alternative economic strategy. However, limited digital literacy and underdeveloped marketing approaches remain major obstacles to the growth of these enterprises. This community service initiative employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, utilizing field observations, semi-structured interviews, and direct training. Students from KPM Group 12 conducted visits to two home industry units—peyek kacang (peanut cracker) and tofu production—and implemented a training program on using Instagram as a digital marketing tool. The results indicate that business owners can manage production independently yet face challenges in reaching broader markets. The introduction of Instagram as a promotional platform successfully enhanced digital engagement, expanded consumer reach, and strengthened the branding of local products. Entrepreneurs began receiving orders through social media, demonstrating increased confidence in utilizing technology. Digital marketing through social media has proven to be an effective strategy for improving the competitiveness of home industry products. Simple technology-based interventions can have a tangible impact on strengthening the local economy. Abstract

Rumbia palm is a natural resource with ecological, economic, and cultural potential, particularly in Teungoh Kuta Batee Village, Meurah Mulia District. Although traditionally used as a roofing material, its utilization has not yet been developed into a productive economic activity. This community service program aims to optimize the use of rumbia leaves through technical training and business mentoring to enhance the community’s economic empowerment. The method employed is a collaborative participatory approach, consisting of initial observation, interviews, and focus group discussions (FGD), technical training, and participatory documentation and evaluation. The activity involved lecturers and 13 students as implementers, with village residents as active partners. Training was conducted directly at local homes, covering topics such as leaf selection techniques, processing, stitching, and assembling rumbia leaf roofing. The results indicate improved community skills in producing high-quality, marketable rumbia leaf roofing. On average, artisans were able to produce 20–25 sheets per week, with a selling price of Rp 10,000–Rp 12,000 per sheet, generating additional income of Rp 200,000–Rp 300,000 weekly. The program also strengthened social solidarity and preserved traditional craftsmanship. Discussion reveals that this initiative successfully integrates economic, social, and environmental aspects into a locally grounded empowerment model. The activity aligns with sustainable development principles and can be replicated in other regions with similar characteristics. Strengthening community capacity through the utilization of local natural resources is key to realizing a self-reliant and competitive village.

Abstract

School libraries play a crucial role in strengthening literacy culture; however, many educational institutions at the primary and secondary levels continue to face challenges related to collection management, limited physical space, and the low utilization of technology. This community service program aims to optimize the library management at SMPN 4 Pujon Satu Atap through a technology-based and spatial revitalization strategy. The method employed is the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, consisting of five key stages: Discovery, Dream, Design, Define, and Destiny. The activities included identifying library assets and problems, redesigning the reading space, maintaining collections, and implementing digitalization using the SLiMS system. The results indicate a significant improvement in the effectiveness of library management, including faster book circulation processes, enhanced information access, and an increase in student visits by up to 30% within six months. The redesigned library layout also created a more comfortable learning environment and encouraged greater student engagement in literacy activities. SLiMS-based digitalization improved the accuracy of collection records and reduced delays in book returns. The study concludes that a technology-supported ABCD-based revitalization model can enhance the quality of school library services and can be replicated in other schools facing similar challenges.

Abstract

Limited economic diversification in rural communities often results not from the absence of natural resources, but from insufficient community capacity to transform local potential into products with economic value. This community service program aims to optimize the natural resources of Matang Baloy Village through the development of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) based on banana stem chip innovation as an effort to empower rural women. The program employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, actively involving the community—particularly groups of housewives—throughout the stages of problem identification, program planning, action implementation, and activity evaluation. Data were collected through participatory observation, focus group discussions, and continuous mentoring during the training and production processes. The results indicate an improvement in community knowledge and skills in processing banana stems into marketable food products, along with the growing readiness of women’s groups to develop home-based enterprises. Beyond generating product innovation, the program also encouraged positive changes in community attitudes toward the utilization of local natural resources that had previously been underused. The PAR approach played a crucial role in bridging the gap between natural resource potential and community capacity, while strengthening women’s roles as key economic actors at the village level. The conceptual model of PAR–natural resources–MSMEs–women’s empowerment developed in this program demonstrates that innovation based on local potential can serve as a sustainable empowerment instrument when supported by participatory processes.

Abstract

Kitchen waste that is not properly managed remains an environmental and social issue in many rural areas. One alternative solution is the implementation of the Losida (Lodong Sisa Dapur) method, which emphasizes community participation in organic waste management. This community service program aimed to optimize kitchen waste processing through the application of the Losida method in collaboration with members of the PKK women’s group in Panggang Lele Hamlet, Arjowilangun Village, Malang. The program was conducted using a participatory approach, including socialization activities, hands-on training, and continuous assistance in processing kitchen waste into organic fertilizer at the household level. Evaluation was carried out through observation and monitoring of participants’ involvement and the outcomes of their independent practices. The results indicated an improvement in participants’ understanding and skills in managing organic waste using the Losida method. The organic fertilizer produced demonstrated good quality and was effectively utilized to support household plant productivity. Active participation of the PKK members also encouraged initial behavioral changes in kitchen waste management and opened opportunities for the economic use of organic waste. The implementation of the Losida method proved to be an effective strategy for community empowerment in sustainable kitchen waste management. Therefore, continuous training and community-based assistance are necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability of the program.
