Abstract

This community service activity aims to identify and understand the problems faced by the residents of Pelawi Utara Subdistrict and to formulate appropriate and applicable solutions. The main focus of the program is on strengthening interpersonal communication and developing work-related skills among community members as essential components of social and economic capital. Communication plays a strategic role in delivering accurate information and fostering harmonious social relations among residents. Meanwhile, work skills are positioned as competencies that can be enhanced to produce valuable and productive outputs. Geographically, Pelawi Utara is located in a midland area and is surrounded by other subdistricts within the Babalan District, Langkat Regency. The outcomes of the program indicate the development of more positive and active communication among residents, which is manifested through artistic works resulting from skill development activities. The impact of this initiative includes improvements in community living standards and the strengthening of social cohesion, supported by the active involvement of local government officials as facilitators and intermediaries between stakeholders.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to increase public understanding of how to reduce the impact of noise and carbon emissions from motor vehicles. Noise and carbon emissions from motor vehicles are environmental problems that are increasing along with the growth in the number of vehicles in urban and rural areas. These impacts not only affect air quality, but also the physical and psychological health of the community. This community service activity aims to empower the community in reducing the impact of noise and carbon emissions from motor vehicles through education, training, and concrete actions based on community participation. The implementation methods include socialization of the impacts of noise and emissions, training on environmentally friendly vehicle maintenance, and campaigns promoting the use of alternative modes of transportation such as bicycles, walking, or public transportation. The results of the activity showed an increase in community knowledge and awareness of environmental issues and the formation of self-help groups that play an active role in campaigning for environmentally friendly behavior. With this program, the community is able to contribute to reducing noise and air pollution, while supporting the creation of a healthier and more sustainable environment.

Abstract

Women play a strategic role in sustaining household livelihoods and strengthening local economies in coastal areas. This community service program aims to empower women entrepreneurs through strengthening micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) based on local wisdom in Desa Kota Pari, Pantai Cermin District. Most women in this coastal village are involved in home-based economic activities such as traditional food processing, fisheries-based products, and small-scale trading. However, limited financial literacy, income management, and market access constrain business development. The program was implemented through observation, counseling, participatory discussions, and evaluation. The results show improved understanding of income management, increased awareness of business sustainability, and strengthened economic roles of women entrepreneurs. This program confirms that empowering women through MSMEs contributes significantly to strengthening local economic resilience in coastal communities.

Abstract

Kota Pari Village, Pantai Cermin Sub-district, Serdang Bedagai Regency, holds promising tourism potential; however, this potential has not been optimally utilized due to a number of issues faced by the residents, such as low work competence, limited access to information on business development management training, residents' insufficient responsiveness to changes in the management system of the village-owned enterprise, and low willingness among residents to apply the knowledge provided, which frequently leads to disagreements during work competence training activities. Therefore, this community service program aims to identify these issues and provide appropriate solutions for the residents of Kota Pari Village and its surrounding areas. Through this program, it is expected that residents will be able to apply work competence to improve employee performance within the Village-Owned Enterprise, actively engage in business development management through creative craftsmanship, and make this a cornerstone for improving their standard of living and economic welfare, with support and facilitation from the Kota Pari Village Office, Pantai Cermin Sub-district, Serdang Bedagai Regency.

Abstract

This community service program aims to increase the capacity of residents in implementing a sustainable home maintenance system for simple residential houses (RTS). The activity was carried out in Medan City, in collaboration with the local residential community and the Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI). The background of this activity is the continued dominance of reactive home maintenance patterns, low energy and water efficiency, as well as the declining quality of health and residential comfort due to the lack of planned maintenance in RTS, which are generally over 10 years old. The main problems faced by the partners include the limited guidelines for integrating green building concepts with systematic and sustainable home maintenance, the perception that home maintenance requires high costs, and the unavailability of practical guidelines that are easy to understand and apply. On the other hand, the green building concept is still perceived as an expensive concept that is only relevant for new buildings, thus it has not been integrated into the maintenance of existing homes. This program offers an educational and participatory solution through a participatory home audit using the 10-Point Green Home Maintenance Checklist based on the GBCI GREEN HOMES principles. The targeted outputs include the availability of replicable maintenance guidelines and modules. This program is expected to reduce minor house damage, improve energy and water efficiency, and support the creation of healthier and more sustainable housing at the community level.

Abstract

Toba Caldera UNESCO Global Geopark is one of Indonesia's strategic tourism destinations with significant geological, ecological, cultural, and educational values. Sustainable management requires collaboration among government institutions, academia, business sectors, local communities, and media. This community engagement initiative proposes a collaborative partnership between the Provincial Government of North Sumatra, Karo Regency, Samosir Regency, the Toba Caldera UNESCO Global Geopark Management Agency, and Toyota Indonesia through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) programs. The implementation methods include stakeholder coordination, participatory planning, environmental conservation, tourism mobility enhancement, community empowerment, and digital tourism development. The expected outcomes are improved tourism accessibility, increased community income, strengthened environmental conservation, enhanced tourist satisfaction, and sustainable regional economic growth.

Abstract

The role of a mosque today isn’t just as a place for prayer—it also plays an important part as an educational space for the community. The goal of this project is to create a space that meets people’s spiritual needs while also offering areas for studying, reading, and character-building activities for the younger generation in Sibolga. The design process involved visiting the site, setting up the terms of reference, analyzing data, coming up with design ideas, and developing a pre-design plan. The concept follows a minimalist and functional architectural approach, with prayer areas and learning spaces blended smoothly into one shared location. The result shows that combining these functions makes better use of space and helps strengthen the mosque’s role as a hub for community growth. Hopefully, this design can be a model for other mosques in coastal areas that may not have much land to build on but have strong community.

Abstract

Assistance in designing public open space plays a crucial role in creating a healthy and inclusive urban environment. In Aceh, the need for public open spaces is increasingly pressing due to standard minimum quantity 30% of open space in the city. Moreover,the demand of open space is increase because population growth, urbanization, and changes in people's lifestyles. Open spaces such as city parks serve social functions (recreation, sports, and interaction between residents) and cultural (as a platform for expressing the local identity), ecological functions (improving environmental quality and reducing microclimate temperatures), aesthetic functions (environmental beauty), and economic functions. However, many public spaces have not been able to fulfill their functions optimally. The stages of the activities carried out include site measurements, design concepts and pra-design. The tools used are AutoCAD, Sketchup, and Adobe Photoshop. This activity produces a final product in the form of a pradesign and a three-dimensional (3D) perspective. The design applies the design principles of balance, rhythm, accentuation, unity, proportion and simplicity. The resulting open space design applies active zoning to accommodate social and economic activities, and uses softscape and hardscape elements that can shape the microclimate.

Abstract

Early childhood education requires a learning environment that is safe, comfortable, engaging, and responsive to children's characteristics. Salsabila Kindergarten in Pematang Serai Village, Tanjung Pura District, Langkat Regency, is one such facility requiring a learning space that adequately supports children's educational activities. This community service activity aimed to develop a classroom design suited to early childhood learning needs and to document the building's condition after construction. The method involved a design process and consultation with the kindergarten management in 2010, with the resulting design later used as a reference for construction. In 2023, documentation was carried out on the completed and functioning building. Results show that the proposed design was successfully implemented while retaining its key characteristics, including a symmetrical façade composition, geometric forms, bright colors, an emphasized entrance area, and openings through doors and windows. Post-construction observations indicate that the classroom is actively used as a learning facility, equipped with supporting materials for children's activities. These findings demonstrate that architectural design considering both function and user characteristics can help create a more engaging and appropriate learning environment for early childhood education.

Abstract

The development of an ecotourism area in Gunung Saribu Village, Karo Regency, is directed at optimizing the natural, cultural, and environmental potential while maintaining the local character of the area. This community service activity aimed to develop an area plan and design for Menara Api as part of the ecotourism development of Gunung Saribu Village. The activity employed a local potential-based area planning approach through field observation, documentation, literature review, design development, consultation, and presentation of the design to the community. The results showed that Gunung Saribu Village has potential in the form of forest areas, agricultural activities, mountainous landscapes, cultural activities, forest products, and Menara Api as a site with historical and tourism value. The planning results included an area zoning plan, Menara Api area plan, key plan, and Menara Api design by maintaining the existing structure and incorporating elements of Karo traditional house architecture. The design was subsequently presented to the community and received feedback regarding the addition of a prayer room around Menara Api. The resulting plan can serve as an input for the Gunung Saribu Village Government in organizing and developing the Menara Api area as a community-based ecotourism area.
