Abstract

In reading, students are required to learn to comprehend the content of the text. Lexical density is one of the factors that influences students’ reading comprehension. Lexical density is a condition of words’ proportion in a text, which shows the ratio of content words (CW) and grammatical function words (GFW). This research used the “Passport to the World” English textbook for the 8th grade of junior high school to be analyzed. This study aims to find out the genres of reading materials offered by the curriculum 2013 found in the textbook and to examine the lexical density of the reading materials in the textbook. A qualitative approach was applied, while content analysis was used as the research design. Data were collected with document analysis. The findings showed that there are 3 genres of reading materials, among 5 genres offered by the curriculum 2013, included in the textbook such as descriptive, recount, and functional texts in the form of announcements. From those, it was found that two texts were categorized as low lexical density, 11 texts were categorized as medium lexical density, and four texts were labeled as high lexical density. In addition, the composition of this text did not reach the ideal ratio of 1:2:1 for index difficulty. However, this textbook can still be suggested to be used in the class with some usage modifications in the classroom.

Abstract

Speaking is a complex skill in language learning, influenced by various internal and external factors. Learners often encounter challenges related to motivation, confidence, interest, environment, mother tongue use, and teaching methods. This research investigates the impact of using YouTube as a learning medium to enhance speaking skills in grade XI students at SMAN 1 Kaliwiro. Specifically, the study aims to (1) analyze the influence of digital literacy, facilitated by YouTube, on the speaking abilities of grade XI students and (2) compare the speaking abilities of students taught using YouTube to those taught using traditional methods. A quantitative experimental design was employed, involving 66 students (33 in class XI Science 2 and 33 in class XI Science 3). The school-based oral assessment (SBOA) form measured pre-test and post-test speaking performance. An independent sample t-test analysis was conducted using SPSS to compare the results. The findings reveal that students taught using YouTube demonstrated a moderately effective improvement in speaking skills, as indicated by a Normalized Gain Test score of 64.13 (64%). These results suggest that YouTube can be an effective tool for enhancing speaking abilities in language learners.

The present qualitative study explores the perceptions of seven Thai undergraduate students in a university on the online learning medium when the COVID-19 pandemic hit this country. Semi-structured interviews were created to clarify the students' viewpoints on online learning medium. Thematic content analysis was used to analyze the transcriptions of the data collected from the online interviews. The study elicits three significant data themes that are connected to the research questions: the Thai students’ perception towards the online learning medium, their preference on the online learning medium, and the problems faced by them along using the online learning medium and the solving. Findings showed that the using of online learning mediums helped Thai students in lecturing during the COVID-19 pandemic. The most preferred online learning medium they use is WhatsApp application, followed by Google Meet as the second choice. They prefer WhatsApp to other online learning mediums or applications since it is stable, cheap, and easy to use. They also re-studied the lecturer’s explanation everywhere and anytime. The research found some problems students faced while using Google Meet or Zoom; the most common problem they faced was an unstable connection. While excessive internet data usage was another obstacle faced by them. To solve those problems, they frequently moved to another place providing free Wi-Fi or asked their friends or family to share the hotspot.

Abstract

English is a crucial medium of communication, with fluency in four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Speaking is one of the most challenging skills, as it allows students to engage in conversations, express meaning, and express opinions. Thinking is a key factor in developing speaking abilities, as it helps individuals solve issues, make decisions, and achieve goals. This research aimed to measure the correlation between students' critical thinking and their speaking skills. A quantitative study of 14 first-semester students of the Diploma 4 Health Promotion study program at Sari Mulia University found a weak correlation (rho coefficient 0.209, sig. score 0.494). The results reject the alternative hypothesis (Ha), indicating that there is no significant correlation between students' critical thinking and speaking ability, confirming the null hypothesis (Ho), is accepted.
