Abstract

The present qualitative study explores the perceptions of seven Thai undergraduate students in a university on the online learning medium when the COVID-19 pandemic hit this country. Semi-structured interviews were created to clarify the students' viewpoints on online learning medium. Thematic content analysis was used to analyze the transcriptions of the data collected from the online interviews. The study elicits three significant data themes that are connected to the research questions: the Thai students’ perception towards the online learning medium, their preference on the online learning medium, and the problems faced by them along using the online learning medium and the solving. Findings showed that the using of online learning mediums helped Thai students in lecturing during the COVID-19 pandemic. The most preferred online learning medium they use is WhatsApp application, followed by Google Meet as the second choice. They prefer WhatsApp to other online learning mediums or applications since it is stable, cheap, and easy to use. They also re-studied the lecturer’s explanation everywhere and anytime. The research found some problems students faced while using Google Meet or Zoom; the most common problem they faced was an unstable connection. While excessive internet data usage was another obstacle faced by them. To solve those problems, they frequently moved to another place providing free Wi-Fi or asked their friends or family to share the hotspot.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of advanced AI chatbots, including ChatGPT, Perplexity AI, and ChatSonic, in generating argumentative essays. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research analyzed data collected through document review. In-depth analysis revealed that these AI chatbots are highly capable of producing persuasive essays. The chatbots generate text that aligns with the given topic by responding to specific prompts. The more detailed the prompt, the more relevant and informative the generated content. Additionally, ChatGPT and Perplexity AI offer valuable writing tips and even suggest online resources for further assistance. However, it is essential to acknowledge the limitations of AI and balance their use with human development and the cultivation of student writing skills.

Abstract

This study examines code-mixing phenomena in the oral Arabic communication of students at An-Nur Tangkit Islamic boarding school in Indonesia. Given the relatively recent introduction of Arabic as a foreign language, students often incorporate Indonesian elements into their speech. Through qualitative field research involving observation and interviews, this study investigates the specific forms of code-mixing employed by students and teachers. The analysis reveals three primary language elements in code-mixing: individual words, phrases, and clauses. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the linguistic practices and challenges faced by learners of Arabic in Indonesian educational settings.

Abstract

English is a crucial medium of communication, with fluency in four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Speaking is one of the most challenging skills, as it allows students to engage in conversations, express meaning, and express opinions. Thinking is a key factor in developing speaking abilities, as it helps individuals solve issues, make decisions, and achieve goals. This research aimed to measure the correlation between students' critical thinking and their speaking skills. A quantitative study of 14 first-semester students of the Diploma 4 Health Promotion study program at Sari Mulia University found a weak correlation (rho coefficient 0.209, sig. score 0.494). The results reject the alternative hypothesis (Ha), indicating that there is no significant correlation between students' critical thinking and speaking ability, confirming the null hypothesis (Ho), is accepted.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is essential for language acquisition and academic success, as it allows students to access information across all subjects. While numerous studies have examined the impact of various reading techniques on student comprehension, the process by which lecturers select and implement these techniques remains underexplored. This study addresses this gap by investigating the decision-making processes of lecturers when choosing techniques for teaching reading comprehension, particularly in non-English departments. Utilizing qualitative methods, including online surveys, semi-structured interviews, and observations, data were collected from lecturers at the Language Center of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang. The findings reveal a two-stage selection process, with student English proficiency as the primary consideration, followed by their academic majors. Additional factors influencing technique selection include age, behavior, attitude, classroom environment, and course content. These insights are valuable for curriculum developers, lecturers, and researchers aiming to enhance language teaching practices and curricular development, ultimately leading to improved student outcomes and pedagogical advancement.

Abstract

Investigating the pedagogical potentials and concerns of ChatGPT's voice conversation feature within the context of language learning, this study begins by exploring the historical context and limitations of traditional language learning methods, such as language exchange, conversation classes, and role-plays. The discussion then shifts to the rise of AI in education, highlighting ChatGPT's advanced capabilities in providing personalized, interactive, and efficient language instruction through natural language processing, machine learning, and speech recognition. While offering advantages such as accessibility, adaptability, and personalized feedback, the technology also presents limitations in accurately assessing pronunciation and contextual nuances. To effectively integrate ChatGPT into language instruction, educators must carefully consider its strengths and weaknesses. This research explores those things to optimize their use and ensure they complement, rather than replace, traditional language teaching methods.
