Abstract

Pelita Hati Secondary School Jember implements Cambridge Curriculum as a holistic international curriculum which integrated learners from the primary until the high level. This school has been considered to be the only school that has a Cambridge curriculum’s licence in Jember. The research focus of this study are 1) Why does Pelita Hati Secondary School implement Cambridge curriculum?, 2) What is the concept of Cambridge curriculum applied at Pelita Hati?, 3) How is the implementation of Cambridge curriculum on English (as second language) teaching learning?. This study used qualitative approach with case study design. Data collecting techniques used in this study were observation, interview, and document review. To analyze the data, researcher use data condensations, data display, drawing and verifying conclusions from Miles and Huberman (2014). For data trustworthiness, researcher use source triangulation, technique triangulation. The findings showed that: 1) The Pelita Hati School implement Cambridge curriculum affected from the ANPS meeting conference in 2011. Because, in the prior time the school with a bilingual system since 2006 doesn’t has a certain curriculum to support their bilingual system. 2) The concepts of Cambridge curriculum in Pelita Hati in term of the components consist of the objective, the content, the process, and the evaluation components 3) Cambridge curriculum implementation in English subject include the planning, the content which consist of  learning activity (preliminary, core activity and closing activity),  global material, discussion method, projector and audio media and Evaluation include the placement test, classroom assessment, achievement test and diagnostic test.

Abstract

This research analyzes foreign terms in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) based on general guidelines for the Indonesian formation of terms (Pedoman Umum Pembentukan Istilah or PUPI). This research is descriptive qualitative. The analysis shows that Based on the General Guidelines for the Formation of Terms, the process of absorbing foreign terms in ICT into Indonesian can be classified into four processes, namely complete absorption, absorption through translation, absorption through adjustment of the form of writing, also absorption through adjustments to the form of writing and translation at the same time. While, the translation process by adjusting the form of writing is grouped into three forms of adjustment, namely spelling adjustment, adjustment of foreign consonant groups, and adjustment of foreign prefixes. In forming Indonesian computer terms, a collection of benchmarks and suggestions in General Guidelines for Enhanced Indonesian Spelling and General Guidelines. The emergence of ICT terms due to the advancement of science and technology can encourage Indonesians to adopt and form Indonesianized terms. Given the importance of the role of foreign terms in ICT as a ‘vehicle’ for the implementation of globalized international communication, ease of speed of mutual understanding between nations receives special attention from Indonesian computer terminology.

Abstract

The students’ drawbacks in listening skill, at the Ma’had Tajul Alawiyyin, has become a problem that must be solved, as it is a fundamental and significant skill in learning the Arabic language. This study aims to find out whether the implementation of al qasaid as syahirah in the book Maslak Al-Nabil can improve the listening skill or not at the Tajul  Alawiyyin islamic boarding school. This research is important as it is that one of the method that can be used to overcome the students’ weaknesses in identifying the difference between the sounds of the audible letters, the sounds of similar letters, and understanding Arabic vocabulary] As for the research methods, it used the quantitative research method which focuses in finding out the effectiveness of teaching listening skill through the famous al qasaid as syahirah. The data was analyzed by using (t-Test). After the treatment, the researchers concluded that the use of al qasaid as syahirah is effective to improve students’ listening skill from the results obtained within the experimental group in the pre- and post-test which suggested that the mean score is significantly different with the control class. Therefore, the implementation of al qasaid as syahirah gives a significant effect for teaching and learning process of the Arabic listening skill.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the different meanings of the word ?ibgah in the Qur'an. The word ?ibgah is only once written in the Qur'an, which is located in surah Al-Baqarah verse 138. The word ?ibgah is analyzed using a semantic approach that is about changing meaning. The analysis was to investigate the meaning of ?ibgah according to the meaning of the Qur'an and then compare it with ?ibgah which is commonly understood today. The process of changing meaning and the types of changes in its meaning will be discussed. This type of research is library research by applying qualitative research. The data used in this study is the word ?ibgah in the Qur'an Surah Al-baqarah verse 138. The data collection technique is the documentation technique and the data collection method is the read and record method. The process of occurrence of such differences in meaning will be discussed and the types of changes in meaning displayed. The result of this study was that ?ibgah meanings differed between the meanings intended by the Qur'an and the meanings commonly understood today. The type of change in meaning found is the expansion of meaning.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the discourses in news articles regarding the Brigadier J murder reported by the Indonesian Police’s official news media & the attempts of the institution in framing the image of the Indonesian Police in handling the murder case through particular words used by the institution’s news media. Further, this study used the descriptive qualitative method as its methodological approach & the corpus-based discourse analysis method as its theoretical approach. The data in this study were taken from news articles from Indonesian Police’s official news media website. The results of the study showed that the relevant keyword used by Indonesian Police news media to frame the murder case of Brigadier J case is the word murder and or premeditated murder. Besides, the way Indonesian Police online news media frame the image of the institution is by distributing positive news about the institution, as well as designating the positions & titles within the names of the officials. Furthermore, the Indonesian Police news media is engaging several positive adjectives to distribute positive images regarding the Police’s accomplishment in handling the murder case of Brigadier J.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify student’s speaking proficiency through the contribution of language input, conducive learning environment, and motivation. This research is qualitative study. Using a case study approach, the research sample consist of a single university student majoring in Business and Management, selected through purposive convenience sampling. Data was collected through interview, which explored student’s speaking ability, the availability of language input, learning environment, and student’s motivation. The findings reveal that the student demonstrated a good level speaking proficiency. Notably, subject's motivation affects her speaking proficiency more than the other aspects; language input and learning environment. Although the student’s exposure to language input is moderate, the learning environment is found as poor. To conclude, the three aspects of language learning: language input, learning environment, and motivation, affect student’s speaking proficiency. The outcomes portray the common experiences of Indonesian language learners as they acquire English as second language.

Abstract

Arabic Grammar (Nahwu) has an important role in the Arabic language teaching. However, some students experience difficulties in this subject matter. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the Cooperative Learning strategy in learning Arabic nahwu using the Nahwu Wadhih book at Ma'had al Qalam Man 2 Malang. Further, this research was held to improve understanding and skills in Arabic both theory and practice through cooperative learning strategies. This study used experimental research designs where the data were collected through tests and questionnaires to determine the effectiveness of cooperative learning strategies in learning nahwu within Arabic language teaching. The research subject of this research were the students of Ma'had al Qalam Man 2 Malang and the board of teachers teaching nahwu subject. Based on the results of the pre-test and post-test as well as the questionnaire, it showed that the implementation of the cooperative learning strategy in learning nahwu within Arabic Language Teaching at ma'had aly MAN 2 Malang City was considered to be effective because the students achieve better score in the subject. Moreover, students were more motivated and develop high level of curiosity in learning the subject. The activity included in the learning process were group discussions, where each member of the group has a role, task and responsibility.

Abstract

Teaching grammar is a very complex task to do since the lecturer does not only teach the rules but also teach other aspects of language. As language component, grammar will always play a significant role within the English skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In relation to this regard, this study exposed the practice of teaching grammar at intermediate grammar class as a part of grammar courses in State University of Malang and seek for the issues of what was happening beyond the classroom which encompassed lecturer’ role, students’ role, classroom management strategy, approach, technique, materials, tasks, language used, lecturer-students interaction, and students’ participation in teaching and learning process. This study used both qualitative and quantitative research approach where the results were described quantitatively in numbers and qualitatively in words describing the phenomena taking place. The results suggested that the teaching and learning process of intermediate grammar at State University of Malang manages to meet almost all of the indicators and criteria within the aspects measured in the observation checklist. The teaching and learning process manages to meet 86.2 % of the indicators which means it meets 50 indicators out of 58. Thus, the teaching ang learning process can be considered as excellent.

Abstract

Project Based Learning (PBL) is a student-centred learning approach in which a teacher acts as a facilitator to help a student solve a problem. In the present study, involvement is a substantial element in PBL because the student is required to learn collaboratively in a group project. Therefore, the study aims to discover how the student is involved in accomplishing scholarly writing in a group project, and what the opportunity of writing a scholarly article collaboratively is. The present research is a case study in a private university in Indonesia. The data are gained from a questionnaire and an interview. The data then are analyzed qualitatively. The study discovers that PBL is believed to activate EFL students’ involvement in terms of contributing to the team project, handling responsibility, and respecting teammates. The opportunities of PBL implementation in writing experienced by the students are getting ideas, designing the project, tunning the project, writing the project, exhibiting the project, and evaluating the project. Finally, the study is expected to provide teachers with practical ideas for implementing PBL effectively in a writing context.

Abstract

This research analyzed the lexical style employed in Setyo Novanto's memes, which have gained widespread circulation on various social media platforms. In order to attain this goal, the study employs van Dijk's theory, which identifies lexical style as a crucial component of the microstructure of memes on social media. The primary aim of this study is to describe the words and expressions utilized to insinuate and criticize Setyo Novanto's conduct. This research was qualitative and delves into the internal structure of the text, including words, phrases, propositions, and sentences. The analysis revealed that writers from diverse cultural, knowledge, and ideological backgrounds used specific lexical to scrutinize Setyo Novanto's behavior in relation to his status. This study provided valuable insights into how social media users employed language to express their opinions and criticisms of public figures. Overall, this research was highly informative in terms of shedding light on the way social media users utilized language to express their opinions and criticisms of public figures.
