Abstract

The phenomenon of code-switching has become a prominent form of linguistic innovation in the digital era, particularly on social media platforms like TikTok. This study aims to analyze the forms, functions, and factors influencing the use of code-switching in TikTok content uploaded by Indonesian creator Shazhaniaa. This study used a descriptive qualitative method, using 43 TikTok captions published between August and September 2025 as data sources. The data were analyzed based on Poplack's classification, which includes three main types of code-switching: intersentential, intrasentential, and tag-switching. The results indicate that the most dominant form of code-switching is intrasentential code-switching, reflecting the creator's linguistic flexibility and high bilingual skills. The primary functions of code-switching include emphasis, social identity, interactional, and affective functions. Furthermore, the use of code-switching was found to play a crucial role in constructing a digital persona, emphasizing an expressive communication style, and strengthening emotional connection with a bilingual audience. Factors influencing the use of code-switching include the socio-digital context, communicative goals, global cultural trends, and psychological factors. Overall, this research confirms that code-switching practices in digital content are not merely linguistic phenomena, but also representations of identity, communication strategies, and forms of cultural negotiation between locality and globality. This study is expected to provide theoretical contributions to the field of digital sociolinguistics and enrich understanding of the dynamics of bilingualism in modern Indonesian online spaces

Abstract

This study examined comparatively scores in eight National Examination of English done upon the completion of Junior high school level and the students’ scores in them. The examinations concerned are four of grade 9 at Basic school and the others four of the former education system. In conducting it, we sought to answer two research questions. While the first was set to understand students’ performance in the first four editions in basic education system compared to their counterparts’ performance in the last four editions in the former system, the second intended to draw lessons from the two categories of students. Document/content analysis was used for data collection. The collected data were the scores in eight national examinations and they were analyzed quantitatively. Microsoft Excel and SPSS were used to this end. After analyzing the collected data, it was found that students evolving in basic education system perform better than their counterparts in the former system. However, it was remarked that their performance generally is low, which calls for better strategies to improve it. It was, therefore, suggested that designing more adequate National Examinations and capitalizing results in them, redirecting the teaching to reflect the National Examination, as well as changing students’ attitudes and the learning environment would help to improve students’ performance in the National Examination.

Abstract

With the development of modern social life, the issue of gender equality has become a topic of increasing concern because various forms of injustice are still commonly found in daily life. This study aims to identify and analyze the representation of radical feminist values in the film Hagar and the One Who Sees using John Fiske’s semiotic approach. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach. The primary data were taken directly from the film Hagar and The One Who Sees, while the secondary data consist of journals, research articles, and literature related to semiotics and feminism. Data collection techniques included watching, taking notes, as well as conducting a literature review and analysis. Data validation was carried out through increased researcher diligence and peer discussion. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model, the stages of data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Analysis at the level of reality reveals that facial expressions, simple and worn-out clothing, the barren desert environment, acts of running and refusal, and Hagar’s dialogues reflect suffering and oppression within a patriarchal structure. At the level of representation, cinematographic techniques (long shots, low angles, close-ups, and tracking shots), the use of lighting (low-key vs. natural), and sound or music emphasize Hagar’s alienation, her struggle, and her hope for liberation. At the ideological level, the film represents radical feminist values through its critique of patriarchy. Hagar and The One Who Sees effectively conveys the ideology of radical feminism through its visual and narrative codes, which critique patriarchy and highlight the struggle of women to gain freedom. This study recommends that John Fiske’s semiotic analysis be applied more widely in research on short films and other media that portray issues of gender and oppression, particularly within Middle Eastern cultural contexts..

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the forms of conversational implicatures used by sellers and buyers in buying and selling interactions at the Kempas District market. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method. The research data consists of sellers’ and buyers’ utterances containing conversational implicatures, with data sources coming from buying and selling interactions at Rumbai Jaya Market, Sungai Gantang Market, and Harapan Tani Market. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, recording, and note-taking. Data analysis techniques used the Miles and Huberman interactive analysis model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show three forms of conversational implicatures, namely 27 instances of general conversational implicatures, 21 instances of specific conversational implicatures, and 5 instances of scaled conversational implicatures. Of these three forms, general conversational implicatures are the most dominant form used in buying and selling interactions in the markets of Kempas District. This finding shows that the general conversational implicature form is predominantly found because most of the utterances in buying and selling transactions are conveyed directly, simply, and easily understood by the interlocutor without requiring additional context. These general implicatures give rise to many implied meanings, such as persuasive meanings, negotiation meanings, subtle sarcasm, and indirect rejection, which are used as strategies by both sellers and buyers in the bargaining process.

Abstract

The tradition of installing penjor is a Balinese cultural heritage that is full of values and symbolism. In this tradition, there are various Balinese lexicons used in the process of making penjor during the Galungan celebration, but the understanding of their use and meaning has not been widely studied, especially in Sari Bhuana Village, Toili Jaya District. The lexicon does not only function as linguistic terms, but is also related to the cultural identity and spiritual values of the community. This study aims to examine the Balinese lexicon used in the tradition of installing penjor and analyze the meaning of each element of penjor, such as tieng, wastra, lamak, tebu, biu, and jaje, based on the understanding of the people of Sari Bhuana Village as part of their cultural identity and spiritual values. This study uses a descriptive method to examine the Balinese lexicon in the tradition of installing penjor during the Galungan celebration in Sari Bhuana Village. Data were obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation of the process of making penjor and sources such as the village head, parisada chairman, traditional leaders, and village officials. Data analysis was carried out through reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions with a focus on identifying terms, functions, and meanings of the lexicon. Data validity was strengthened through triangulation of sources and techniques. The results of the study indicate that the Balinese lexicon in the penjor installation tradition functions not only as linguistic terms but also contains cultural meaning in each of its elements. This lexicon represents the relationship between humans and nature and spiritual values passed down through generations. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the Balinese lexicon in the penjor installation tradition serves as a cultural symbol that conveys a philosophy of life and a form of devotion to the Creator.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the representation of the values of friendship, courage, and self confidence contained in the film Jumbo by Ryan Andriandhy through Roland Barthes’ semiotic study. This research was conducted on the animated film Jumbo which was released in 2025. The population in this study were all scenes in the film Jumbo, while the research sample was in the form of scene clips that display visual and verbal signs that represent the values of friendship, courage, and self-confidence. The research instrument in this study was the researcher himself as the main instrument with the help of a data classification table. The data collection technique was carried out through listening, reading, and taking notes by watching the film repeatedly, observing the scenes, and documenting relevant image clips. The data analysis tool used was Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory which includes three levels of meaning, namely denotation, connotation, and myth. The results of the study show that the film Jumbo represents the value of friendship through mutual support and solidarity between characters; the value of courage through the actions of characters in facing fear, conflict, and challenges; and the value of self confidence through the process of self-acceptance and the main character’s belief in his abilities.

Abstract

This study analyzes the defense mechanisms of marginalized characters in the novel Sisi Tergelap Surga by Brian Khrisna. The research was conducted as a library study without a specific location, using primary data in the form of the novel’s text and secondary data from books, journals, and relevant scientific articles. The population of the study includes all marginalized characters in the novel, while the sample was determined through excerpts depicting defense mechanisms. The researcher acted as the research instrument, assisted by a data recording guide using the read-and-record technique. Data analysis was carried out descriptively and qualitatively using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The results show that marginalized characters face social pressures, internal conflicts, and injustice by employing defense mechanisms such as repression, projection, rationalization, and displacement. Repression is shown through the suppression of feelings and experiences that cause anxiety, projection through the transfer of guilt and faults onto others, rationalization through logical justification of painful actions or conditions, and displacement through the venting of negative emotions toward safer targets. These defense mechanisms enable the characters to maintain psychological balance amid a life full of pressure, while also reflecting the social, economic, and structural impacts on the mental condition of marginalized groups. The findings contribute to the study of literary psychology, particularly regarding the representation of mental health among marginalized groups in contemporary Indonesian novels.
