Abstract

The role of mothers is very strategic in preventing stunting through fulfilling nutritional needs during pregnancy, providing exclusive breastfeeding, implementing balanced nutritional complementary feeding (MP-ASI), and regularly monitoring child growth and development. Mothers also play a role in maintaining environmental cleanliness, accessing basic health services (ANC, immunization, iron supplementation), and implementing responsive parenting practices. Objective: This Community Service Program aims to improve mother’s knowledge in preventing and managing stunting through nutrition education, growth and development monitoring. Methods: The methods used in this program included screening, lectures, and discussions, with sequential stages consisting of field observation and problem identification, proposing solutions, activity planning, implementation, and evaluation. Activities were carried out through interactive counseling sessions, demonstrations of growth monitoring, and screening or detection of child growth status. Results: The results showed a significant increase in mothers’ knowledge. The proportion of mothers with knowledge increased from 30% to 90% after receiving the educational intervention. Conclusion: The educational activities implemented were proven effective in strengthening mothers’ capacity in stunting prevention and have the potential to reduce stunting risk at the household and community levels. Structured and targeted education needs to be continuously enhanced as part of strategies to accelerate stunting prevention.

Abstract

Adolescence is a transitional period from childhood to adulthood characterized by biological, emotional, social, and cognitive changes. During this period, adolescents’ reproductive organs begin to function actively, making them a vulnerable age group to various reproductive health problems, such as unintended pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, and early marriage. These problems are often influenced by adolescents’ low level of knowledge regarding reproductive health. Adolescent reproductive health refers to a healthy condition related to the reproductive system, functions, and processes, encompassing physical, mental, social, and cultural aspects. Therefore, maintaining reproductive health during adolescence is very important as a preventive effort against future health risks. The purpose of this counseling activity was to increase and enhance adolescents’ knowledge of reproductive health. The method used was health education through interactive counseling. Based on the results of a self-assessment survey, it was found that the main problem was a lack of reproductive health knowledge among 30 adolescents. To address this issue, counseling was conducted covering the definition of reproductive health, common reproductive health problems, and ways to maintain reproductive health. After the counseling session, participants showed high enthusiasm for the material presented through leaflets and video media.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem that affects the quality of human resources. Stunting prevention efforts need to focus on the First 1,000 Days of Life (1000HPK), from pregnancy to two years of age. Approximately 468–469 children under five in Keerom Regency are suspected of experiencing stunting. Malaria during pregnancy can lead to anemia, low birth weight, and other pregnancy complications if not properly managed. Health cadres play a strategic role in providing education and support to the community. This community service activity aims to empower health cadres by increasing their knowledge and understanding of the importance of the 1000HPK in stunting prevention and how cadres can provide counseling to pregnant women about malaria prevention. The methods used included counseling, interactive discussions, and evaluation of cadre knowledge. The activity results showed an increase in the knowledge of 15 cadres regarding the concept of the 1000HPK, stunting risk factors, and the role of cadres in stunting prevention efforts in the community. Furthermore, there was an increase in cadre knowledge regarding malaria prevention efforts in pregnant women.

Abstract

The issue of blood availability remains a challenge in healthcare services, particularly in meeting transfusion needs in hospitals. Low participation in voluntary blood donation and limited public understanding, including among university students, regarding the importance of donation contribute to the imbalance between blood demand and supply. This community service activity aims to increase voluntary blood donation participation through the involvement of Universitas Dr. Soetomo students as agents of social awareness at RS Bhayangkara Watu Kosek. The activity was conducted offline through brief education, donor health screening, and blood donation implementation in collaboration with hospital healthcare professionals. The participants consisted of 50 Universitas Dr. Soetomo students, comprising 15 males and 35 females. Results indicated that all eligible participants successfully donated blood, and there was a marked improvement in students' understanding and positive attitudes toward blood donation as a form of social and humanitarian concern. This activity demonstrates that student-based community service is effective in supporting hospital blood availability while simultaneously building students' social character. The outcomes of this service serve as an important model for sustainable collaboration between universities and hospitals in supporting healthcare services.

Abstract

The issues of blood availability and the high prevalence of anemia among adolescents remain major public health challenges in Indonesia. Low health literacy, misconceptions about blood donation, and unbalanced dietary patterns highlight the need for systematic and sustainable educational interventions. This community service activity aimed to improve adolescents’ knowledge, attitudes, and behavioral readiness related to blood donation and anemia prevention through participatory education involving students of Universitas Dr. Soetomo as agents of change. The program was conducted offline through interactive lectures, dialogic discussions, simulations, and evaluations using pre-test and post-test methods. A total of 50 participants were involved, consisting of 15 males and 35 females. The results demonstrated an increase in the average knowledge scores from a moderate category in the pre-test to a high category in the post-test, accompanied by more positive attitudes toward blood donation and increased awareness of nutrition and iron supplementation. These findings indicate that student-based participatory health education is effective in enhancing adolescent health literacy. This community service initiative is important as a model of community empowerment oriented toward health behavior change and the strengthening of the role of higher education institutions in public health development.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the primary health issues among the productive-age group, often remaining undetected due to low public awareness regarding routine screenings. This community service project aims to conduct blood pressure screenings while simultaneously increasing awareness of hypertension risks among the productive-age population in Menur Pumpungan Village. The activity was conducted offline through blood pressure measurements using standardized digital tensimeters, accompanied by brief education on hypertension and its prevention. The participants consisted of 100 individuals from the general public, including both productive-age men and women. The results indicated that a portion of the participants fell into the prehypertension and hypertension categories, while others maintained normal blood pressure levels. These findings suggest a significant potential for hypertension issues within the productive-age population. This initiative underscores the importance of routine blood pressure checks for early detection and strengthens the role of community service in supporting promotive and preventive health efforts at the village level.

Abstract

Emergency and post-disaster conditions often disrupt essential midwifery services, directly affecting the safety of mothers and newborns. Limited access to health facilities, shortages of healthcare personnel, and weak referral systems are major barriers to maternal and neonatal care in disaster-prone areas. This Community Service Program was conducted in Nogosari Village, Pacet District, Pasuruan Regency, East Java, to strengthen the preparedness of midwifery services. The methods included cross-sector coordination, community education, capacity building for supporting personnel, mentoring of health cadres, and simulation of essential midwifery service pathways in crisis situations. The activities focused on the provision of basic midwifery services, continuity of care for pregnant women, childbirth, postpartum mothers, and newborns, as well as strengthening the referral system. The results showed increased knowledge, skills, and preparedness among community members, cadres, and volunteers in maintaining essential midwifery services during emergencies. In addition, a shared understanding was developed regarding the importance of continuity of midwifery care as a form of protection for vulnerable groups. This program strengthened the resilience of community-based midwifery service systems and supported efforts to reduce maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality risks in disaster situations. Furthermore, the activity encouraged sustainable collaboration among healthcare workers, village authorities, and the community to maintain adaptive and responsive midwifery services in the future.
