Abstract

Elderly people go through a degenerative process that causes a decline in neuromusculoskeletal and vestibular function, resulting in balance disorders that increase the risk of falls. The Elderly Maintain Balance program is a Community Service Program (PKM) program implemented at the Senja Bahagia Pucang Sawit Integrated Health Post (Posyandu), Surakarta. The purpose of this activity is to improve the knowledge and balance of the elderly, as well as compliance with exercise. Evaluation of the activity was carried out by measuring the knowledge of the elderly using a questionnaire. Data analysis using the Wilcoxon test to determine the increase in balance, as well as compliance with exercise using a questionnaire, the results of which will then be described. The results of the community service activity showed that knowledge increased to 47.56%, there was an increase in balance with a p-value of 0.035, and there was compliance in carrying out exercises with a percentage of 87.93%. The community service activity was said to be successful in increasing knowledge, balance, and compliance in carrying out balancing exercises in the elderly in the Pucang Sawit area, Surakarta. This program can be used as an example for other areas in an effort to improve the welfare of the elderly through a holistic approach that actively involves the community.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the major health problems with an increasing prevalence worldwide. This condition is largely attributed to the lack of public awareness regarding risk factors and preventive measures. Therefore, education is essential to improve community literacy, particularly in relation to the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of hypertension. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the pocketbook “Hipertensi, Yuk Pahami Penyebabnya!” in enhancing community knowledge. The research employed a quantitative descriptive method with a pre-test and post-test design. The results revealed that the average knowledge score before the educational intervention was at a low-to-moderate level (70%). Following the intervention, there was a significant improvement, with an average understanding score reaching a high level (60% increase). The pocket book, as an educational tool, proved to be an appropriate and easily comprehensible medium for rural communities, and it can serve as a model for promotive interventions.

Abstract

The birth process is a physiological event that is inherently associated with pain. Labor pain must be managed effectively because, when accompanied by stress responses, it can have harmful effects on both the mother and fetus. Pain during childbirth can be managed through pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. The identified problem in the community is the suboptimal use of birth balls and essential oils as non-pharmacological methods to reduce pain and promote relaxation during labor. This community service activity aimed to empower midwives and health cadres in utilizing birth balls and essential oils through a peer group discussion method. Several midwives and cader were trained in the basic techniques of using birth balls, applying essential oils, and preparing simple essential oil blends. The activity was conducted at the Ngesrep Primary Health Center. The results showed that midwives and cader were able to provide education on the use of birth balls and essential oils to support successful and minimally traumatic childbirth. As a follow-up, cader are expected to serve as key motivators in promoting the use of birth balls and aromatherapy within the community. Public support is also encouraged to enhance the adoption of these methods to improve childbirth outcomes with minimal trauma.

Abstract

Banggae Subdistrict is one of the highest producers of capture fisheries in Majene Regency, with a production of 2,598 tons in 2024, making the fisheries sector one of the most promising sectors for development. However, the community of Cilallang in Banggae Subdistrict has not optimized fish processing. Despite the high fish production, diversifying local fish processing could also be an alternative to improve the nutritional status of toddlers. Data on the nutritional status of toddlers, particularly stunting in Banggae Subdistrict, shows a rate of 30.82%. This means that stunting is still a nutritional problem for the community. Therefore, as part of the optimization of food processing based on local food, community service was carried out focusing on the diversification of local skipjack tuna food through the production of fish-based meatballs and nuggets. The results of the community service program showed that after the education, there was an increase in mothers' knowledge about the importance of fish consumption and the importance of diversifying fish processing. There was also an increase in the skills of mothers of toddlers after the demonstration of making fish-based nuggets and meatballs. The community service program targeted a group of 12 housewives with stunted toddlers. The issue addressed was encouraging innovation and creativity among the group of mothers, particularly in terms of diversifying the processing of local skipjack tuna as an effort to improve the skills of mothers of stunted toddlers in the Cilallang Majene coastal area. Through more varied fish products, it is hoped that toddlers will enjoy eating fish to support improved nutritional status and reduce stunting rates in the Cilallang area. The results of the community service program show that after the education, there was an increase in mothers' knowledge about the importance of fish consumption and the importance of diversifying fish products, as well as an increase in the skills of mothers of toddlers after demonstrations on making fish-based nuggets and meatballs.

Abstract

Hypertension remains a major public health issue in Indonesia. The 2018 Riskesdas reported that 34% of Indonesians suffer from hypertension, with 13.2% occurring in young people. Both genetic factors and unhealthy lifestyles are significant risk factors for hypertension among adolescents. These data indicate that adolescents are at high risk of developing hypertension. Hypertension is a serious condition that requires long-term care due to complications such as stroke, kidney failure, and heart disease. Providing education on hypertension and identifying its risk factors are among the key strategies for prevention in adolescents. This Community Service Program (PKM) aimed to provide information about hypertension and identify risk factors among adolescents. The activity was carried out with 50 students from SMA Negeri 1 Abiansemal, Badung Regency, Bali. The method used was PARE (Preparation, Action, Reflection, and Evaluation). The results of the program showed an increase in adolescents’ knowledge about hypertension after receiving education, with the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test indicating a z-value of -6.122 and a p-value < 0.001. Identification of risk factors revealed that most adolescents practiced unhealthy lifestyles such as low physical activity, frequent consumption of fast food and fatty foods, insufficient intake of vegetables, caffeine consumption, and smoking. Although only a small proportion of adolescents had a family history of hypertension as the main risk factor, prevention efforts are still necessary through lifestyle modification

Abstract

Adolescents are a strategic group for health promotion because habits formed during this stage often persist into adulthood. However, many adolescents remain insufficiently active, spend long hours on screens, sleep too little, and have limited awareness of posture and simple health monitoring. This community service activity aimed to strengthen adolescent health cadres through the SURYA MUDA program at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Minggir. The activity involved 10 student cadres and 2 accompanying teachers and was delivered through short lectures, interactive discussion, practical demonstrations, group simulations, and simple health screening. The educational content covered physical activity literacy, posture and ergonomics, sleep hygiene and screen-time management, safe bodyweight exercise, and basic anthropometric and blood pressure checks. Pretest and posttest evaluation showed an increase in the mean score from 85.0 to 87.0. Participants also produced a cadre action plan and demonstrated improved readiness to disseminate healthy behaviour messages in the school environment. The program indicates that a school-based, peer-led, and low-cost approach can strengthen adolescent health promotion while supporting physical and mental well-being.

Abstract

Patients with mental disorders often experience limitations in social functioning, daily activities, and interaction. Group Activity Therapy is an effective psychiatric nursing intervention to improve patients' social, cognitive, and emotional abilities. Group Activity Therapy is an integral part of the Professional Nursing Practice Model (MPKP) program in psychiatric wards. However, the implementation of Group Activity Therapy in wards is often suboptimal due to the limited variety of engaging and productive activities for patients. This community service activity aims to optimize the implementation of group activity therapy through aromatherapy candle making training for patients in the psychiatric ward of PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital, Gombong. The activity was conducted using a hierarchical approach of education, demonstration, training, and hands-on practice involving patients and healthcare workers. The activity was implemented through preparation, training, and evaluation. The activity results showed that both nurses and patients were able to participate effectively in the activities, demonstrated increased participation in group activities, and were able to independently make aromatherapy candles with nurse guidance. In addition to improving patient skills, this activity also provided a relaxing effect and increased social interaction among patients. This program can be an innovative alternative for implementing group activity therapy in psychiatric wards. Therefore, simple skills training activities such as aromatherapy candle making can be integrated as part of the Professional Nursing Practice Model in hospitals.
