Abstract

While elderly population in Indonesia continues to increase, research around elderly and health care for elderly is still limited. The purpose of this study was to identify priority of research area on Gerontic Nursing in Indonesia. This was a descriptive study, using Delphi study with 2 survey rounds. Round 1 involved 34 participants purposely selected among nurses who worked in the area of and had a research interest in Gerontic Nursing. Open ended online questionnaire about priority areas was sent to potential participants. Data was analyzed for its similarity, resulted in 36 research areas around Gerontic Nursing. Round 2 involved 204 nurses with the same criteria as in round 1, selected using convenience sampling technique. Close ended questionnaire using Semantic Differential Scale ranged from 1 to 9 was sent online to potential participants. Data was descriptively analyzed for median, interquartile range (IQR), and range. Findings indicated 10 levels of research priority. Level 1 research priority with median of 9, IQR 1, and range 5 were long term care for elderly, family knowledge on caring for elderly, personal hygiene in elderly, competency of Gerontic Nurse, and nutrition in elderly. Nurse academics and researchers are suggested to collaborate with nurse practitioners in various settings to conduct research on these priority areas.

Abstract

Background and purpose: Hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke. Despite efforts to control hypertension with pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies, the prevalence of and death from stroke is reported to be increasing. This study aims to determine the association of hypertension self-management with the incidence of stroke in patients with hypertension. Methods: A case-control study was conducted involving 44 patients suffering from hypertension and who had suffered a stroke as cases, as well as 44 patients with hypertension and without stroke as controls. Cases and controls were conveniently selected at the outpatient clinic of Badung District Hospital. Data on self-management of diet, physical activity, stress mitigation efforts, alcohol consumption, and medication adherence were collected using self administered questionnaire. Data on the diagnosis of hypertension, stroke and history of comorbidities were obtained from the patient’s medical records. Multivariate analysis using logistic regression was employed to assess the association between hypertension self-management with the incidence of stroke in patients with hypertension. Results: Characteristics of cases and controls did not differ in education, marital and socioeconomic status, but differed in age and employment. Multivariate analysis showed that there were three components of hypertension self-management associated with the incidence of stroke, namely poor adherence to medication (AOR=7.28; 95%CI: 2.19-24.17), poor self-management of stress (AOR=5.45; 95%CI: 1.56-18.99), and poor management of self-regulated diet (AOR=5.28; 95%CI: 1.31-21.32). Conclusion: Medication adherence, diet and stress management are the three main components of self-management that are associated with stroke events among hypertension patients. Efforts to increase medication adherence, diet and stress management should be enhanced.

Abstract

Background: Non-pharmacological management of hypertension through complementary medicine has now been developed in Indonesia. However, the interest of hypertensive patients in complementary medicine is not optimal because there are many factors that influence the behavior of patients in the use of complementary medicine. Methods: This study employed an analytic study design with a cross-sectional approach. This research was conducted at Puskesmas 1 East Denpasar for 1 month. This study involved 101 hypertensive patients using accidental sampling technique. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire. Data were analyzed univariately and bivariately using SPSS version 20. Results: This study showed that most hypertensive patients had good knowledge of hypertension treatment with complementary therapies (64.4%). A total of 53.5% of hypertensive patients showed adequate behavior in the treatment of hypertension with complementary therapy. Based on the chi square test, it was found that there was a significant relationship between knowledge and behavior of hypertensive patients towards hypertension treatment with complementary therapy (p-value = 0.04). Conclusion: It is recommended for health workers to increase education and promotion about hypertension treatment with complementary therapy, especially for hypertensive patients with poor knowledge.

Abstract

The rapid growth of the older population worldwide has had significant consequences in the health care system, especially in preparing prospective nurses as health workers with positive attitudes towards older people. Unfortunately, students' attitudes have been reported to vary from positive attitudes to indications of ageism towards the older age group. This study aimed to identify and describe current findings regarding nursing students' attitudes toward older people in Southeast Asian countries. This study was conducted using a narrative review approach. The literature was sourced from international databases: PubMed, Science Direct, EBSCOhost, and ProQuest. Keywords included "attitude" AND "older people" OR "elderly" OR "older Adult” AND "nursing student". A total of 154 articles were found and there were 7 articles that met the inclusion criteria from five Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, and Vietnam. In general, nursing students in the five Southeast Asian countries have positive attitudes toward elderly health and are highly willing to become elderly nurses as their future career. The attitudes toward older people among nursing students are associated with the level of nursing students' knowledge about older people’s health, subjective norms towards older people, perceived behavioral control, good intentions, having learning experiences with project-based learning about older people’s health on campus, and having experience caring for older people during the education process. Incorporating more comprehensive Gerontic nursing content into the nursing education curriculum, including theoretical knowledge and direct practice opportunities, is imperative to increase students’ positive attitude toward older people.

Abstract

The aging process has caused various health problems, including limited physical mobility due to muscle weakness, joint stiffness, and certain chronic disease conditions. Efforts to maintain the health of older people can be done through Range of Motion (ROM) exercises, with the family as caregivers having an essential role in doing so. This community service activity aims to improve the knowledge of elderly caregivers by providing education and simulations on ROM exercises for older people. A total of 41 caregivers from Melinggih Village, Gianyar Regency and Pedungan Village, Denpasar City were involved in this activity in March 2025. The activity was carried out using the education and simulation method, with stages using the PARE (Preparation, Action, Reflection, and Evaluation) approach. The results of the Wilcoxon statistical test obtained a p-value < 0.001 with Z = - 3.65, which showed a significant difference in the level of caregiver knowledge about ROM exercises in older people before and after the activity. Good knowledge increased from 63% to 100%, and poor knowledge decreased from 31.7% to 0%. This shows that community service activities with education and simulation methods have successfully increased caregivers' knowledge and practical abilities in performing ROM exercises for older people. ROM exercises can be an easy choice for caregivers as an effective way to maintain the health of older people in the community, support long-term care programs, and thus improve the quality of life for the older people in the community.

Abstract

Physically demanding tasks in long-term care, such as lifting and repositioning patients, increase caregivers' risk of musculoskeletal disorders, highlighting the need for empowerment through targeted education and skills training to ensure safe practices. This community service aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational training program for caregivers, focusing on working posture management and technique in transferring older people to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. A pre- and post-intervention design was used to assess cognitive improvement and participant satisfaction among 41 caregivers in community setting. Results showed a marked increase in correct responses across all questionnaire items following the training, indicating improved knowledge and satisfaction throughout the training. The increased to 95.1% after the training was found, indicating a significant gain in knowledge about the basic concepts of transfer techniques. Participants expressed high satisfaction, with simulation-based learning identified as the most effective instructional method. The findings suggest that targeted, practical training can enhance caregivers’ competencies and contribute to safer caregiving practices. Despite these positive outcomes, limitations included a participant bias, limited follow-up, or the socio-economic context of the participants in short-term evaluation. Future programs are recommended to include follow-up assessments and wider community involvement to ensure long-term impact and sustainability.
