Abstract

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) extract is known to contain potent antioxidant compounds such as lycopene, vitamin C, and flavonoids that can protect reproductive cells from oxidative stress. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of tomato extract in improving the quality of spermatozoa in white rats (Rattus norvegicus) exposed to cigarette smoke, which is a major source of free radicals. The research applied a literature review approach by identifying, selecting, and analyzing related studies published between 2013 and 2023 from the Google Scholar and Academia.edu databases. Ten eligible studies were included for synthesis. The results show that the administration of tomato extract at doses ranging from 20 to 60 mg/kgBW/day significantly increased sperm motility, morphology, and viability in rats exposed to cigarette smoke. The improvement was associated with the antioxidant effect of lycopene, which protects Leydig cells and maintains testosterone production. These findings suggest that tomato extract has significant potential as a natural antioxidant therapy to prevent oxidative damage and reproductive disorders caused by cigarette smoke exposure.

Abstract

The prevalence of hypertension in the elderly continues to increase and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Uncontrolled blood pressure can lead to serious complications such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. Anxiety, which is often experienced by the elderly, also plays a role in worsening hypertension through activation of the sympathetic nervous system and increased stress hormones. This study aims to determine the relationship between anxiety levels and the incidence of hypertension in the elderly at the Kuta Alam Community Health Center in Banda Aceh City. The study used a quantitative method with a cross-sectional analytical design. The study population consisted of 145 elderly people with hypertension, with a sample of 59 people selected through a purposive sampling technique. The study was conducted from April 28 to May 8, 2025. Anxiety levels were measured using the Geriatric Anxiety Inventory (GAI) questionnaire, and blood pressure was measured using a digital sphygmomanometer. Data analysis was carried out univariately and bivariately using the Chi-square test. The results showed that the majority of respondents experienced panic anxiety (39.0%) and Grade III hypertension (44.1%). There was a significant relationship between anxiety levels and the incidence of hypertension in the elderly (ρ = 0.000; ρ < 0.05). In conclusion, anxiety influences the severity of hypertension, so psychological aspects need to be considered in elderly health services at the Kuta Alam Community Health Center.

Abstract

Based on the 2020 data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health, injectable contraception is more widely chosen than other contraceptive methods. One of the side effects of injectable contraception is that it can affect family well-being and also affect the mental health of those who work. Sexual life is crucial for supporting family well-being, so the impact of injectable contraception on sexual receptor dysfunction must be properly managed (Ningsih, 2021). The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the use of three-monthly injectable contraception and decreased sexual desire or libido in contraceptive users. The research design used was quantitative, namely analytical research with a cross-sectional approach. The study population was 45 users of three-monthly injectable contraception. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, with a sample size of 45. The statistical test used was the chi-square test, and the result was a chi-square value of 35.837 (p-value = 0.001). Because the p-value = 0.001 is less than 0.005, the null hypothesis is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis is accepted, indicating a significant relationship between the use of three-monthly injectable contraception and decreased libido in contraceptive users.

Abstract

Pneumonia is one of the leading causes of mortality in children under five, especially those living in households with active smokers. This study aims to determine the risk of pneumonia in toddlers from smoking families in the working area of Meuraxa Public Health Center, Banda Aceh City. The research used a case-control design with 33 respondents, consisting of 11 cases (toddlers with pneumonia) and 22 controls (toddlers without pneumonia). Data collection was conducted through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using the chi-square test. The findings revealed that the prevalence of pneumonia among toddlers from smoking households was 33.3%. There were significant associations between pneumonia incidence and several factors, including nutritional status (p = 0.024), immunization status (p = 0.034), exclusive breastfeeding (p = 0.027), parental smoking behavior inside the house (p = 0.009), and household ventilation (p = 0.017). Toddlers who were not exclusively breastfed, had poor nutritional status, incomplete immunization, poor air ventilation, and exposure to cigarette smoke at home were at higher risk of developing pneumonia. This study emphasizes the vital role of the family in creating a healthy, smoke-free home environment that supports children's well-being. Community-based interventions and educational programs are essential to prevent pneumonia and improve the quality of life of children, particularly in urban public health areas like Meuraxa.

Abstract

Extraction is a crucial stage in obtaining bioactive compounds from natural materials that have potential as medicinal, cosmetic, or nutraceutical ingredients. Among the various extraction methods available, maceration remains one of the most widely used techniques due to its simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and ability to maintain the stability of active compounds. The maceration process involves soaking powdered plant material in a suitable solvent at room temperature for a certain period, accompanied by periodic stirring to facilitate the diffusion of active compounds into the solvent. This method is particularly effective for extracting polar and semi-polar compounds such as flavonoids, phenolics, and essential oils that are sensitive to heat. The review shows that the effectiveness of maceration is influenced by several key factors, including the type and concentration of solvent, particle size of the material, duration of soaking, and stirring frequency. The use of ethanol with higher concentrations generally yields greater extract recovery and higher levels of active compounds. In addition, maceration is considered environmentally friendly because it requires no excessive heating and can employ safe, natural solvents. Therefore, despite the development of advanced extraction technologies, maceration remains a relevant, practical, and efficient method for phytochemical extraction, especially in laboratory research and small-scale herbal industries.

Abstract

Hypothermia during surgery is a common occurrence among pediatric patients due to their immature thermoregulation system, higher body surface area-to-weight ratio, and thinner subcutaneous fat layer. This condition can lead to several complications, including increased bleeding, coagulation disorders, surgical wound infections, and delayed healing. Prevention strategies include active and passive warming methods. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of active and passive warming in preventing intraoperative hypothermia in pediatric patients. A scoping review approach was applied to interpret the evidence based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria, followed by data exploration, analysis, and synthesis of findings. The results indicate that active warming methods—such as forced-air warming, blanket warming, and warmed intravenous fluids—are more effective than passive warming in maintaining normothermia during surgery. Moreover, combining both approaches provides optimal prevention against hypothermia. Overall, active warming plays a vital role in stabilizing body temperature and enhancing patient safety during pediatric surgery. Therefore, its implementation should be considered a standard practice in perioperative nursing care.

Abstract

Teenagers are in a developmental phase that is highly sensitive to various environmental influences, particularly those from their parents. Unhealthy parenting styles, also known as toxic parents, have a high potential to harm teenagers' psychological well-being. This study aims to determine the relationship between toxic parenting behavior and the mental health of teenagers in MTsS Krueng Raya. This research employed a quantitative method with a cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of 74 people, with a sample of 63 teenagers selected using a proportional random sampling technique. The instruments used were the Indonesian Version of the Poisonous Parenting Style Scale (IVPPSS) questionnaire to measure toxic parents and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) to measure mental health. The data was analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The research results indicated a significant relationship between toxic parents and teenagers' mental health, with a ρ-value of 0.001 (p < 0.05). This study concludes that the higher the level of toxic parents, the lower the level of teenagers' mental health. Parents are expected to adopt supportive parenting styles, and schools are expected to provide counseling services to maintain students' mental health.

Abstract

The puring plant (Codiaeum variegatum), which has been known as an ornamental plant, apparently has significant therapeutic potential, supported by the presence of secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, tannins, saponins and alkaloids. Various modern studies report the biological activity of croton leaves, including anti-cholesterol, anti-hyperglycemia, antibacterial effects, and their use in biosurfactant formulations. However, studies on how varying extract concentrations influence bioactivity parameters quantitatively are still limited, especially in the context of dose-response relationships involving many biological parameters in one series of research. Therefore, this research was conducted to evaluate eight bioactivity parameters, namely PSM, SSSP, DSSP, SL, RO, SM, PSL, and ANA at croton leaf extract concentrations of 1%, 2%, and 4%. This research uses a laboratory experimental approach by extracting croton leaves through a maceration method using ethanol, then formulated in three concentration levels. Each parameter was analyzed quantitatively to observe the pattern of changes in biological response to variations in the dose administered. The results showed that most of the PSM, SSSP, DSSP, SL, and PSL parameters showed an optimum response at a concentration of 2%, which indicates that there is a most effective dose point before a decrease in activity occurs at the highest concentration. In contrast, several parameters such as RO, SM, and ANA showed a more fluctuating response, even the ANA parameter gave the highest value at a concentration of 4%, indicating that certain activities require higher compound levels to be achieved. In general, the response pattern found was not linear, but instead formed an optimum curve typical of the bioactivity of plant extracts. These findings confirm that determining dosage is very important in the use of croton leaf extract, both for pharmacological purposes and for the formulation of natural ingredient-based products.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the spatial patterns of ambulance transport demand in Semarang City based on patients’ origin subdistricts, origin villages, and destination healthcare facilities. The analysis employed the K-Means Clustering algorithm as a data mining method to group areas according to similarities in the volume of ambulance requests. The dataset consisted of ambulance transport service records from January 2024 to September 2025, obtained from the Semarang City Health Office. The analytical procedures included data cleaning, normalization, determination of the optimal number of clusters using the Elbow Method, and cluster formation using K-Means. The results show two main clusters for subdistricts and destination healthcare facilities. High-demand subdistricts were generally densely populated areas such as Banyumanik and Pedurungan, with an average of 1,256 requests, while RSUP Dr. Kariadi emerged as the dominant referral facility with 3,893 requests. Meanwhile, village-level origins formed three clusters, with average demands of 549 (high), 190 (medium), and 36 (low). These findings are expected to support strategic planning for equitable ambulance fleet distribution and improved efficiency of patient transportation services in Semarang City.

Abstract

Handwashing with Soap (CTPS) is the activity of cleaning hands using clean, running water and soap to remove dirt, oil, and various germs such as viruses, bacteria, and parasites that may cling to the skin. As one of the most effective, simplest, and most affordable methods of preventing infectious diseases, CTPS is highly important to practice consistently, especially among students at Public Elementary School 283 located in Waitomu Hamlet, Leihitu District, Central Maluku Regency. However, observations indicate that after school activities or playtime, several students still show reluctance to wash their hands, which may be influenced by low awareness, limited understanding of hygiene, insufficient supervision, or the absence of strong daily habits related to cleanliness. This issue reflects the need for more structured hygiene education, continuous reminders, and interactive learning methods to instill good handwashing habits. In addition, improving supporting facilities—such as accessible handwashing stations, adequate soap supply, and visual posters—can motivate students to practice CTPS more regularly. Strengthening CTPS awareness and habits is expected to reduce the risk of disease transmission, foster a healthier school environment, and encourage students to adopt lifelong hygiene practices that benefit both their personal well-being and the wider community.
