Abstract

Background: The manufacture of tablet formulations relied heavily on binding agents, but the high utilization of synthetic binders in the current pharmaceutical industry was associated with long-term safety concerns and elevated production costs. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the excipient potential of natural materials, particularly starch derivatives and gum exudates, as more economical and environmentally friendly alternative binding agents. Methods: This study employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method guided by the PRISMA protocol through Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect databases within the 2022–2026 publication range, which retrieved 25 articles meeting the inclusion criteria. Results: The review results demonstrated that natural materials exhibited binding capacities comparable to standard synthetic polymers like PVP, and were proven to significantly enhance tablet hardness, reduce friability, while physical modifications such as pregelatinization successfully improved the flowability of native starch for the direct compression method. Conclusion: This study concluded that natural excipients held great potential as alternatives to commercial binders, although precise concentration optimization and purification process standardization were required to overcome raw material quality inconsistency.

Abstract

Vaginal discharge is one of the most common reproductive health problems experienced by women and refers to vaginal fluid other than menstrual blood. In Indonesia, approximately 75% of women have experienced vaginal discharge at least once, while the prevalence among adolescent girls aged 15–24 years reaches 31.8%. Although vaginal discharge is generally physiological, poor vaginal hygiene may increase the risk of pathological vaginal discharge. This study aimed to analyze differences in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding vaginal hygiene among female students of the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Economics at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU) in relation to the occurrence of vaginal discharge. A cross-sectional design was employed using an accidental sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using the Wilcoxon Matched Pairs Test. The findings showed that good knowledge of vaginal hygiene was predominantly found among Faculty of Economics students (71.3%), whereas poor knowledge was mostly identified among Faculty of Law students (1.3%). Positive attitudes were highest among Faculty of Law students (91.3%), while good vaginal hygiene practices were more common among Faculty of Economics students (72.5%). Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to vaginal hygiene between students of both faculties in relation to the occurrence of pathological vaginal discharge. The study concludes that differences in knowledge, attitudes, and hygiene behaviors are associated with the occurrence of pathological vaginal discharge among female students.

Abstract

The development of natural-based anti-aging cosmetic products is an important innovation in the modern cosmetics industry, prioritizing safety, effectiveness, and environmental sustainability. Young coconut fiber (Cocos nucifera) waste contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, lignins, and natural antioxidants that have the potential to be used as active ingredients in anti-aging cosmetics. This study aims to analyze the development of nanoparticle-based anti-aging cosmetic products from young coconut fiber waste as an effort to utilize sustainable local materials. The research method uses a laboratory experimental approach with stages of active compound extraction, nanoparticle formulation, testing the physical characteristics of the preparation, and testing the antioxidant activity and product stability. Nanoparticle technology is applied to increase the penetration of active ingredients into the skin so that anti-aging effectiveness is more optimal. The results show that young coconut fiber waste extract has high antioxidant activity and can be formulated stably in the form of cosmetic nanoparticles. The resulting preparation has a homogeneous particle size, good spreadability, a pH that meets cosmetic standards, and optimal physical stability during storage. In addition, the use of young coconut fiber waste as a cosmetic raw material provides economic added value while supporting the concept of green cosmetics and reducing organic waste based on local resources. Thus, the development of nanoparticle anti-aging cosmetics based on young coconut fiber waste has the potential to become an innovation in natural cosmetic products that are effective, environmentally friendly, and competitive in the sustainable cosmetics industry.

Abstract

Substance use disorders (NAPZA) remain a major public health challenge in Indonesia, affecting an estimated 4.15 million people in 2025 and showing high rates of post-rehabilitation relapse. This review aimed to examine relapse determinants, barriers to rehabilitation access, and opportunities for pharmacotherapy in Indonesia. A narrative literature review was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, and Portal Garuda to identify studies published between 2015 and 2026. Nine studies met the inclusion criteria, comprising six cross-sectional, two case-control, and one qualitative study. The findings revealed significant systemic barriers, including limited rehabilitation capacity and inadequate cross-sectoral integration. Individual factors associated with relapse included low motivation, poor knowledge, hepatitis status, low self-efficacy, and high craving. Family-related factors, particularly inadequate emotional, social, and moral support, also significantly increased relapse risk. Environmental influences, such as peer pressure, easy drug availability, and direct drug exposure, further contributed to relapse. Pharmacotherapy options remain limited, with methadone maintenance therapy available on a restricted scale, while N-acetylcysteine and natural reward-based therapies have not been evaluated in Indonesia. Overall, relapse is driven by multidimensional factors, highlighting the need for integrated rehabilitation programmes combining pharmacological and psychosocial interventions to improve long-term recovery outcomes.

Abstract

With growing antimicrobial resistance becoming a major health concern, there is an urgent need to explore alternative treatment options. This study examined the efficacy of copper sulfate pentahydrate (CSP) against eight microorganisms commonly implicated in vaginal infections. We tested three Candida species (C. albicans, C. glabrata, and C. tropicalis) along with five bacterial species, including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Gardnerella vaginalis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The agar dilution test was performed at concentrations ranging from 0.0001M to 0.7M of CSP. We obtained an effect of CSP antimicrobial, which was concentration-dependent. Concentrations low ( ≤ 0.007M) did not influence growth significantly. We observed partial growth inhibition at medium concentrations (0.05-0.07M, equivalent to approximately 780 -1092 µg/ml) of the solution. The growth of bacteria and yeasts was fully inhibited at 0.05M and 0.07M, respectively. The dose required to kill the organisms (not merely inhibit their growth) was 0.25M (approximately 2014 µg/ml) across all microorganisms used, and we verified this by observing no growth when samples were inoculated into fresh media. These findings have indicated that CSP possesses good antimicrobial efficacy against typical vaginal pathogens at doses that may be applied in topical therapies. However, some additional research is required, especially the research that will investigate the toxicity on human cells and the production of suitable formulations to be used clinically.

Abstract

Diarrhea remains a leading cause of mortality among toddlers in Indonesia, with a prevalence reaching 4,9%. In addition to pharmacological management through LINTAS DIARE, non-pharmacological therapies such as baby massage are increasingly being implemented as supportive interventions that families can perform to accelerate recovery. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of baby massage as a complementary therapy in reducing the frequency and intensity of diarrhea in toddlers. The method used involved identifying relevant articles from Google Scholar and Semantic Scholar databases using appropriate keywords. Based on the 6 articles obtained, baby massage significantly (p = 0,000) reduces the frequency and intensity of diarrhea through vagus nerve stimulation, which optimizes intestinal peristalsis and nutrient absorption. Beyond improving defecation patterns, this therapy is proven to significantly increase infant weight, accelerate motor development through central nervous system stimulation, and enhance sleep quality and comfort.

Abstract

Rational drug use is one of the essential efforts to improve the quality of pharmaceutical services and ensure patient safety. Evaluation of prescribing patterns can be conducted using prescribing indicators established by the World Health Organization (WHO). This study aimed to describe drug use based on WHO prescribing indicators at Apotek M Bandung during January 2026. The study employed an observational design with retrospective data collection from prescription documents received at the pharmacy. The research sample was determined using a total sampling method in accordance with predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The indicators analyzed included the average number of drugs per prescription, the percentage of generic drug prescribing, antibiotic prescribing, injectable drug prescribing, and the use of medicines listed in the National Essential Medicines List (DOEN). The results showed that the average number of drugs per prescription was 2.4 items. The percentage of generic drug prescribing was 84.3%, antibiotic prescribing was 0.5%, and no injectable drugs were prescribed. The percentage of medicines prescribed from the DOEN was 88.20%. Overall, most indicators met WHO standards, except for the average number of drugs per prescription and the use of DOEN medicines, which had not yet reached the ideal values. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the prescribing pattern at Apotek M Bandung reflects a relatively rational use of medicines; however, further efforts are still required to optimize compliance with WHO prescribing standards

Abstract

Stunting remains a major public health problem in Indonesia, particularly in Aceh Province. Family smoking behavior and adherence to exclusive breastfeeding are considered important determinants of child nutritional status. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between family smoking behavior and exclusive breastfeeding adherence with stunting among toddlers in Tuha Village, Trienggadeng District, Pidie Jaya Regency. This study used a quantitative cross-sectional design with a sample of 46 toddlers selected using simple random sampling. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis with logistic regression tests. The results showed that family smoking behavior was significantly associated with stunting (p = 0.002; OR = 0.12; 95% CI: 0.03–0.47). Meanwhile, exclusive breastfeeding adherence was not significantly associated with stunting (p = 0.940; OR = 0.94; 95% CI: 0.17–5.09). These findings indicate that exposure to cigarette smoke in the household is an important risk factor affecting child nutritional status. Strengthening family-based interventions, especially smoke-free home initiatives, is essential to reduce stunting prevalence.

Abstract

This study aimed to form late and evaluate a natural massage oil preparation using a combination of lavender, citronella, and chamomile essential oils with olive oil as the carrier oil. The background of this research was based on the increasing public demand for natural body care products that are safe, non-irritating to the skin, and provide relaxation effects. The three essential oils used possess therapeutic activities, including relaxation, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory effects, as well as the ability to relieve stress and muscle tension. The study employed three formulation variations (F1, F2, and F3) with different compositions of essential oils. The evaluation of the preparations included organoleptic tests, pH measurement, viscosity, specific gravity, physical stability testing, hedonic testing, and irritation testing. The organoleptic test results showed that all formulations had a liquid form, a deep light-yellow color, and a characteristic aroma corresponding to the dominant essential oil in each formulation. The pH values of all formulations were stable at 5, indicating safety for skin application. Viscosity values were within the ideal range for massage oil, between 4.124–4.735 cPs, and specific gravity values were within the standard range. Stability testing over 28 days revealed no significant changes in color, aroma, pH, or viscosity. The irritation test indicated that none of the formulations caused skin irritation in panelists. Hedonic testing showed that formulation 2 was the most preferred in terms of aroma, while formulation 3 was preferred for texture. Overall, all three formulations were considered stable, safe, and well accepted by consumers, indicating their potential use as natural massage oil products.
