Abstract

Background: Child development problems in Indonesia and other developing countries are generally caused by two things: malnutrition and infectious diseases. An infectious cause that continues to be a problem in children is respiratory infections. Respiratory tract infections attack the upper and lower respiratory tract. In infants, the immune system is not yet optimal and is easily infected with various diseases including ARI. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between nutritional status and the incidence of acute respiratory infections (ARI) in toddlers. Method: This study was conducted with observational analytic method with cross sectional approach. Results: The results of this study showed that toddler patients with ARI in Tongas Probolinggo Hospital were dominated by female patients (51.7%), male patients (48.3%). The age of patients who dominated is age 1-2 years (60.0%) and 3-4 years (40.0%). The types of patients based on nutritional status were well-nourished patients (53.3%) undernourished (26.7%) and malnourished 12 people (20.0%). Diagnosis of the disease Non-ARI (33.3%) and ARI (66.7%). The data results using the chi square method showed a p value of 0.001 < α = 0.05, so it can be concluded that H0 is rejected, H1 is accepted. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between nutritional status and the incidence of acute respiratory infections (ARI) in toddlers in January - December 2023 at Tongas Regional General Hospital, Probolinggo.

Abstract

Background: Gastritis or ulcer disease is a condition when the inner layer (mucosa) of the stomach wall experiences inflammation or swelling. Objectives: This study aims to determine the relationship between stress and diet with incidence gastritis in students at the Bangkalan Madura Islamic Boarding School. Methods: The design of this study uses a descriptive analytical case control approach. Result: The results of the research that has been conducted on 95 respondents divided into case groups (gastritis) amounting to 47 respondents and 48 respondents were in the control group (non-gastritis). The results of the analysis showed that most of the students experienced very heavy stress, namely 21 respondents (22.1%), while in the diet, most of them experienced a lack of diet category, a total of 56 respondents (58.9%). Meanwhile, the results of the Chi Square stress statistical test obtained a value of 0.005 with a significance level of 0.05. The test criteria are that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected if < 0.05. Because the value in the statistical test was greater than 0.05, H0 was rejected, which means that there was a significant relationship between stress and the incidence of gastritis in students. Also, in the results of the Chi Square stress statistical test, a value of 0.001 was obtained with a significance level of 0.05, which can be concluded that there is a relationship between diet and the incidence of gastritis in students. Conclusions: The conclusion of this research is that very severe stress and poor diet can trigger gastritis in students at the Bangkalan Madura Islamic boarding school, Bancaran Bangkalan. It is hoped that this research can be a reference for students and pesantren to evaluate diets and activities that are too dense to be able to prevent the occurrence of gastritis.

Abstract

Background: Height is one of the important anthropometric parameters in the fields of anatomy, physical anthropology, and forensic identification. Height estimation can be done by measuring certain body segments because there is a proportional relationship between the length of body segments and height. The length of the femur segment and the carpalia digiti III segment are body parts that have the potential to be used to estimate height. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between height and the length of the femur segment and the length of the carpalia digiti III segment in students of the Faculty of Medicine, Wijaya Kusuma University, Surabaya, Class of 2023. The research method used an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The study sample consisted of 30 students who met the inclusion criteria. Height was measured using a microtomies, while the length of the femur segment and the carpalia digiti III segment was measured using an anthropometric tape. Data analysis was performed using Spearman's correlation test, Pearson's correlation test, and linear regression. The results showed that the average height of students was 163.48 cm, the average length of the femur segment was 46.61 cm, and the average length of the carpalia digiti III segment was 9.62 cm. There is a very strong and significant relationship between femur segment length and height (r = 0.909; p = 0.000), and a strong and significant relationship between carpalia digiti III segment length and height (r = 0.714; p = 0.000). Regression analysis shows that femur segment length is a more dominant predictor of height than carpalia digiti III segment length. Conclusion: Femur segment length and carpalia digiti III segment length are significantly related to height, and femur segment length has greater potential as a prediction of height in the fields of anthropometry and forensics.

Abstract

Background: Muscle strength plays an important role in supporting daily activities involving the M. antebrachii, such as gripping, lifting, and writing. Medical students often have demanding academic schedules that limit their physical activity, potentially affecting muscle strength. Although resistance training has been shown to improve muscle strength through neuromuscular adaptations, evidence regarding the effectiveness of short-term resistance training on M. antebrachii strength in medical students remains limited. Objective: To analyze the effect of resistance training on M. antebrachii muscle strength among medical students. Methods: This study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. Muscle strength was measured before and after the intervention using a handgrip dynamometer. Data were analyzed using a paired-samples t-test to compare the mean muscle strength before and after the intervention. Cohen’s d effect size was also calculated to determine the magnitude of the intervention effect. Results: The mean muscle strength increased by 0.31 kg after the resistance training intervention compared with the baseline measurement. However, the paired-samples t-test showed no statistically significant difference between pretest and posttest results (p = 0.680; p > 0.05). Furthermore, the effect size analysis yielded a Cohen’s d ≤ 0.075, indicating a trivial effect. Conclusion: Short-term resistance training did not produce a statistically significant improvement in M. antebrachii muscle strength among medical students. Although there was a slight increase in the mean muscle strength, the change was minimal and not statistically significant. This finding may be associated with the short duration of the intervention and the fact that the participants were fasting during the study period.

Abstract

Background: Rapid urbanization has transformed food systems and consumption patterns in urban areas. Vulnerable groups face economic, environmental, and social barriers in accessing safe and nutritious food, a condition further aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Objectives: To identify determinants of urban food security and nutrition, analyze the most vulnerable groups, and describe recommended strategies and interventions. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted using the PRISMA 2020 guidelines with searches on Google Scholar. Of 432 articles identified, 9 articles met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. Results: Economic factors, food environment, urbanization, and social and institutional factors are the main determinants of urban food security. The most vulnerable groups include low-income households, female-headed households, renters, and residents of informal settlements. The COVID-19 pandemic worsened food insecurity through income loss and supply chain disruptions. Recommended strategies include strengthening local food production, food diversification, improving distribution systems, social protection, and improving the urban food environment. Conclusions: Urban food security is a multidimensional issue requiring an integrated and multisectoral approach involving the food, health, social, economic, and spatial planning sectors.

Abstract

Background: Food safety is a pressing global public health issue, as contaminated food can cause millions of illnesses each year. Street food is an important segment of the food industry, providing ready-to-eat food at affordable prices and easy access. However, because this sector is largely informal and lacks regulatory oversight, the potential for food safety risks is high, particularly in developing countries. Objectives: To present a systematic review of food safety practices in street food globally from 2020 to 2025. Methods: This systematic review followed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines with narrative synthesis. A literature search was conducted in March 2025 using three databases, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and PubMed, using a combination of keywords with boolean operators. A total of 9 studies meeting the inclusion criteria were analyzed thematically. Study quality was assessed using the JBI Critical Appraisal Tool. Results: Studies have shown that lack of formal training, inadequate supervision, and poor hygiene conditions are the main factors increasing the risk of food contamination. Although vendors' experience and environmental cleanliness can improve food safety practices, these are insufficient without strict regulations and continuous training. Conclusions: Efforts to improve food safety must involve a comprehensive approach, including ongoing training, good regulation, provision of appropriate infrastructure, and increased awareness among traders and consumers.

Abstract

Background: Migrants are a vulnerable group experiencing various health and nutritional problems due to environmental changes, limited access to health services, cultural barriers, and acculturation stress. Therefore, health and nutrition promotion are important strategies to improve the quality of life and well-being of migrant populations. Objectives: To identify the forms of health and nutrition promotion interventions in migrant populations, assess their effectiveness, and explore barriers to their implementation. Methods: This study used a Systematic Literature Review method based on the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Article searches were conducted through the Google Scholar database using the keywords "migration" AND "health promotion" AND "nutrition". Articles published in 2019–2024 were selected based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. A total of 6 articles met the criteria and were analyzed narratively. Results: The review showed that community-based and participatory interventions, such as CBPR and salutogenic programs, were effective in improving quality of life, strengthening social support, and reducing stress levels in migrants. In addition, health-promotive behaviors and self-efficacy were shown to contribute positively to the quality of life of migrant workers, while acculturation stress had a negative effect. In terms of nutrition, the main barriers identified include language barriers, economic constraints, low health literacy, a lack of culturally appropriate educational materials, and concerns about immigration policies that hinder access to nutrition assistance programs. Conclusion: The success of health and nutrition promotion among migrant populations is influenced by individual, social, cultural, and structural factors. A culturally sensitive, community-based approach, supported by strengthening self-efficacy, social support, and increasing access to health information, has the potential to provide more effective and sustainable benefits for migrant populations.
