Abstract

Sumanik is one of the nagari located in Silimpaung District, Tanah Datar Regency, known for its lush environment and cool air. This natural beauty must be preserved to prevent pollution caused by the increasing amount of household waste, especially plastic waste. As an effort to maintain cleanliness and environmental sustainability, a socialization program on waste separation and its utilization into ecobricks (eco-friendly bricks) was conducted with the PKK women of Nagari Sumanik. This activity aims to raise public awareness, particularly among women, about the importance of managing household waste wisely and creatively. Through this training, the women were taught how to separate waste, compress plastic into bottles, and use ecobricks as simple building materials. It is hoped that this activity will foster new environmentally friendly habits and position Nagari Sumanik as a role model for waste management awareness.

Abstract

Stunting is a serious health problem that hinders children's physical growth and cognitive development due to long-term malnutrition. This study aims to explain the role of government, community participation, and school contributions in preventing stunting in Kubang Utara Sikabu Village, Sawahlunto. The method used was descriptive qualitative through interviews, observations, and document studies. The results showed that stunting remains a government priority, with a prevalence decline from 21.1% (2021) to 13.6% (2022). The community is beginning to understand stunting, but the implementation of healthy eating habits is still suboptimal. Parents are quite active in supporting children through Integrated Health Posts (Posyandu), although access to nutritional assistance and school involvement in nutrition education remains limited. This study emphasizes the importance of synergy between the government, schools, and the community to improve parental knowledge for better parenting practices, thereby continuing to reduce stunting rates.

Abstract

Stunting is a growth disorder in toddlers characterized by a height lower than that of an average child for their age. It results from prolonged nutritional deficiencies, especially during critical periods of their lives. Stunting also carries the risk of diminishing a child's intellectual abilities. This research employed a quantitative approach using a one-group pretest-posttest design. The low level of awareness and understanding among mothers in rural areas regarding stunting and its impact on children's academic achievement indicates the necessity for educational interventions that can bridge the community's understanding of the importance of nutrition and child care to support their educational success. Based on the pre-test, out of 15 respondents, 6 individuals (40%) had a poor level of knowledge, 6 (40%) were in the moderate category, and 3 (20%) had good knowledge regarding stunting prevention. After the education was conducted, the post-test results showed a significant improvement. The number of respondents in the poor knowledge category decreased to 0%. The moderate category remained at 6 individuals (40%). In the good category, the number increased from 3 individuals (20%) to 9 individuals (60%). This change indicates that the education provided successfully increased the knowledge of mothers of toddlers regarding stunting. With this enhanced understanding, mothers are expected to take more appropriate preventive measures, such as providing adequate nutritional intake and paying attention to their child's growth and development from an early age. This is crucial, given that the mother's role as the primary caregiver significantly influences the quality of a child's future health and education.

Abstract

The Waste program is one of the pillars of Walinghealth, designed to strengthen community-based waste management in Leuweungkolot Village, Cibungbulang Subdistrict, Bogor Regency. The main problems identified in this village include the low level of household waste segregation awareness, limited waste management facilities, and the persistence of illegal dumping practices. To address these issues, the program was implemented through six key strategies: capacity building of the implementing team through waste bank training, socialization of waste segregation, establishment of a TPS3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Waste Processing Site) in RW 06, designation of collection points in several neighborhood units, formation of GASSAH (Gerakan Sadar Sampah Hidup Sehat) as a local driving community, and clean-up activities involving around 20 residents. The results indicate increased community participation, the establishment of local institutions, and the availability of physical infrastructure such as TPS3R and waste collection points. Approximately 100 kg of waste was managed during the initial phase. This program contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3, SDG 11, and SDG 12.

Abstract

As one of the most populous countries in the world, Indonesia is facing serious challenges in waste management, particularly in rural areas that have not yet developed adequate waste treatment systems. Kubang Utara Sikabu Village in Sawahlunto City serves as an example of such a region, where structured and sustainable waste management practices are still lacking. This community service project aimed to enhance residents’ understanding of proper waste management through an educational and participatory approach. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through field observation, interviews with local residents, documentation of activities, and a community outreach program conducted on July 3, 2025. The outreach covered topics such as types of waste, the environmental hazards of inorganic waste, the application of the 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), ecobrick-making practices, and the installation of educational boards displaying information on the decomposition times of various waste materials. The results indicated an increase in public awareness regarding waste sorting and processing. Community responses were largely positive, particularly concerning plastic pollution and the benefits of recycling activities. This initiative also integrated science education elements, including the study of material properties, energy concepts, and the application of science in everyday life. Overall, this outreach program marked a significant first step toward fostering a culture of responsible and sustainable waste management at the village level.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the implementation of an English tutoring program as part of the Community Service Program (KKN) by Universitas Negeri Padang in Period II of 2025, held in Kubang Utara Sikabu Village, Lembah Segar District, Sawahlunto City. The program aimed to improve basic English skills of elementary school-aged children through a fun and participatory learning approach. During the activity, the researcher observed differences in learning achievement between male and female students. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine whether there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups. The research employed a quantitative approach with a comparative design. Participants consisted of 16 children, 8 males and 8 females. Data were collected from post-test scores and analyzed using the non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test due to the data not meeting the assumptions of normality and homogeneity. The results showed no significant difference in English learning achievement between male and female students (p > 0.05). These findings suggest that the applied learning approach successfully created an equitable learning environment for all participants. The implication of this study highlights the importance of adaptive and inclusive teaching strategies to support successful learning without gender bias, particularly in the context of community-based non-formal education.

Abstract

This community service activity was motivated by the low awareness and understanding of residents in Kubang Utara Sikabu Village regarding waste decomposition time and its impact on health and environmental sustainability. The village was selected due to the high generation of household waste, the absence of an effective waste sorting system, and the prevailing practice of burning or burying waste indiscriminately. The main objective of this activity was to educate the community about the differences in decomposition times between organic and inorganic waste, as well as to raise awareness of health risks caused by improper waste management. This study employed a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews with two key informants, Mrs. Nelly and Mrs. Sofia. The results showed significant improvement in knowledge and behavioral changes, including household waste segregation, composting of organic waste, and planning for separate waste collection facilities in each neighborhood. Community-based environmental education proved effective in fostering ecological awareness, strengthening healthy living behaviors, and supporting the creation of a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
