Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate how EFL students saw the application of Digital Storytelling (DST) as a means to support their English. The aims are to establish the advantages of the application of Digital Storytelling (DST) at school and to examine how the students view DST as a way of supporting their speaking. The study is conducted at SMAN 1 Sindang, Indramayu, involving 44 senior high school participants. For the sake of obtaining overall data, a mixed method was utilized through the use of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The results indicated that students have positive attitudes towards DST, demonstrating how DST makes them more motivated, creative, and confident in delivering their messages in English. In addition to encouraging learners to become active in studying, DST is a great avenue for fluency, pronunciation, and vocabulary practice. However, it was also mentioned that some of the issues were quoted, such as a lack of technical knowledge and a shortage of resources. The significance of the findings is the potential of DST as an effective pedagogical instrument that integrates technology application and language learning. The implication of the study is that DST is effective in developing student engagement and speaking skills. Further research is recommended to investigate its long-term impact and explore its application in other language skills and educational environments.

Abstract

Language is very important because people use it to share their thoughts and feelings. This study talks about how a singer named Yebba shows her feelings of betrayal and sadness in her song My Mind. Many people listen to songs, but not many understand how the words in a song can show deep emotions. The purpose of this study is to find out how Yebba uses language to express her mental struggle and broken heart. The writers used a qualitative method, which means studying the song’s lyrics carefully to find the meaning behind the words. The research used Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics, especially the part called transitivity, which looks at actions, feelings, and people in sentences. The results show that most of the sentences use material processes, which describe real actions like closing the door or leaving. There are also mental processes that show what the singer thinks and feels, and relational processes that describe what something is like. The song uses language to show both outside actions and inner emotions. In the end, this study shows that Yebba’s My Mind tells the story of betrayal and emotional pain through the way the words are used. It also helps us understand how songs can use simple language to show deep feelings. The study suggests that other researchers can use this method to study different songs and learn how singers express their emotions through words.

Abstract

This study analyzed how the Instagram account @jakarta.keras constructed its news headlines through a system of transitivity within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) proposed by Halliday and Matthiessen (2014). Using a qualitative descriptive method, fifty news headlines were collected and analyzed to identify six types of processes: material, mental, relational, verbal, behavioral, and existential. The results show that material processes dominate (50%) with an emphasis on concrete actions and real events, followed by relational (18.48%), mental (17.39%), verbal (11.96%), and existential (2.17%) processes, with no behavioral processes found. This dominance indicates that @jakarta.keras tends to frame social reality through action-oriented narratives that highlight specific events and figures. Mental and relational processes contribute to the formation of emotional engagement and social judgment, while verbal and existential processes strengthen credibility and the discovery of new things. Overall, this study found that language in digital news headlines not only functions as a means of conveying information, but also as a strategic tool in constructing meaning and ideology.

Abstract

This study investigates Mekhadat, a ritual speech performed in Alas wedding ceremonies, from a sociolinguistic perspective focusing on language, power, and identity. Using qualitative methods, including participant observation and interviews with community elders, the study explores how Mekhadat embodies ecological metaphors, symbolic authority, and cultural identity. The findings reveal that natural and agricultural imagery, such as rice and water, is central to the discourse, reflecting the Alas community's ecological worldview and their emphasis on fertility, harmony, and prosperity. The study also highlights the power dimension, where only elders or traditional leaders are authorized to deliver Mekhadat, thus legitimizing authority through language in line with Bourdieu's notion of symbolic power. Furthermore, Mekhadat functions as a cultural marker, strengthening collective identity and transmitting values across generations. These findings suggest that Mekhadat is not simply a ritual performance but also a place where ecological wisdom, social hierarchy, and cultural identity converge. This study contributes to broader discussions in sociolinguistics by demonstrating how ritual discourse in minority languages functions as a medium for cultural continuity and symbolic negotiation

Abstract

In the era of globalization, Western communicative norms increasingly shape global interaction and often overshadow indigenous practices with deep cultural significance. This study examines Kaonak, a traditional Papuan greeting, to explore how indigenous communication systems function as cultural preservation and subtle resistance to homogenization. Using a qualitative ethnographic design, data were gathered from five indigenous Papuans in Jayapura through interviews, participant observations, and field notes, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. The findings show that Kaonak embodies the Papuan philosophy of basodara (brotherhood), expressing unity, respect, and relational harmony. Although modernization has reduced its use among younger generations, the greeting remains meaningful for those who view it as cultural heritage. Its continued practice reflects an assertion of identity and a moral worldview rooted in Papuan cosmology. The study argues that sustaining Kaonak contributes to cultural resilience and highlights the importance of integrating indigenous communicative traditions into educational and intercultural programs.

Abstract

This study analyses the types of deixis found in Wiz Khalifa’s selected songs through a pragmatic lens. Deixis, the study of how language elements refer to contextual features such as participants' roles and their social and temporal settings, is examined based on Brown and Levinson’s (1978) theory. The research employs a qualitative approach, involving the listening to and transcribing of the lyrics, followed by categorizing deixis expressions. A total of 343 occurrences of deixis were identified, with person deixis (262 instances) being the most frequent, followed by spatial deixis (15), temporal deixis (59), and discourse deixis (7). This finding shows that person deixis dominates in expressive and narrative lyrics of both songs because it directly involves the speaker and the addressee, making the message more personal and relatable to listeners.

Abstract

The representation of wealth and how it is inherited often determines a person's position in the social structure. The difference between old wealth and new wealth reflects different lifestyles, values, and forms of social recognition. This study aims to analyze Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, how the film depicts class and social inequality, and reflect on its relevance to contemporary Indonesian society. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the analysis focuses on cinematic elements such as setting, characters, and visual symbols that represent the contrast between “old money” and “new money.” Guided by Marxist theory, this study explores how the film depicts class struggle, capitalism, and the illusion of social mobility. The results of the study reveal two key findings. First, the film affirms that new wealth does not automatically confer cultural legitimacy, as the social structure remains controlled by established groups. Second, this representation is relevant to the Indonesian context, where differences in lifestyle, access, and privilege between “old money” and “new money” are still strongly visible in urban social life. However, this study has limitations because it only examines one film and does not use empirical data from Indonesian society. Overall, The Great Gatsby criticizes capitalist inequality and illustrates how class divisions persist over time, both in 1920s America and in Indonesia today.

Abstract

This research discusses the abbreviations of words used on Twitter (X) by Gen Z. This study aims to analyze the categorization and functions of abbreviations used by Generation Z on the Twitter (X) platform. This research is based on theories of Schendl (2001) and Jakobson (1960). The study employs a qualitative descriptive method with a thematic analysis design, analyzing screenshot-based textual data. The findings indicate that the dominant type of abbreviation is Initialism, totalling 20 instances, which is defined as an abbreviation where each letter is pronounced separately. This is followed by Clipping, which consists of 10 instances and refers to a shortened form of a word. Blends recorded the same frequency, 10 instances, referring to words formed by combining two or more words. Next, Acronyms appeared 7 instances, defined as abbreviations pronounced as regular words. Lastly, Contractions were found in 3 instances, referring to two words combined into one using an apostrophe (’). This study not only identifies patterns of digital language development among Generation Z but also contributes academically to current digital linguistics studies. These findings enrich our understanding of how social media communication practices influence language change, especially in the use of word abbreviations. In addition, this study has significant social implications, particularly in efforts to improve digital literacy and to design communication strategies better suited to the characteristics of the younger generation in the technological era.

Abstract

Social deixis is a key part of pragmatics that shows how language expresses respect, authority, and social ties in different cultures. Although deixis has been studied a lot, there is still not much research on how social deixis can show both authority and emotional bonds in stories with strong cultural and family themes, such as the animated film Coco. This study examines how social deixis is used in Coco (2017), focusing on how it reflects respect, authority, and emotional closeness between characters in Mexican culture. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study reviews and analyzes all film dialogues with social deixis, sorting them into relational and absolute types based on Levinson’s theory. The findings show that relational social deixis, especially kinship terms and informal address, is most common, highlighting the importance of family ties and solidarity. Absolute deixis, though less common, points to respect and power differences. The study concludes that social deixis in Coco helps build cultural identity and share moral values, showing how film language connects cultural and emotional understanding. Future research could compare how social deixis appears in different cultures and media to deepen our understanding of language, culture, and communication.
