Abstract

Irony is often employed as a form of social criticism, particularly in online discourse. This study examines the function of irony in comments on the Instagram Reel Liga Korupsi Indonesia (LKI). This qualitative descriptive study aims to identify the various roles irny plays in user comments on the Instagram Reel “LKI” The qualitative descriptive method is appropriate as it allows an in-depth exploration of irony as a linguistic phenomenon within the context of social media interactions. In accordance with the problems in this study, the writers use theories related to the function of irony found from several articles discussing the function of irony from several perspectives. Data, ironic comment, were collected through documentation and content analysis, while triangulation was ensured through methodological and theoretical approaches. The writers identified six primary functions of irony in the comments: (a) a subtle form of criticism (12 out of 76), (b) intensifying condemnation or "salting a wound" (6 out of 76), (c) humour and social bonding (18), (d) emotion regulation (8 out of 76), (e) a persuasive tool in debate and discussion (9 out of 76), and (f) balancing praise and blame (23 out of 76). Among these, irony as a balance between praise and blame emerged as the most frequently used function, indicating that netizens prefer a diplomatic approach to criticism rather than outright confrontation. Conversely, irony employed to intensify condemnation was the least frequent, as its confrontational nature often leads to conflict and unproductive debate. The study highlights how irony serves as an effective tool for nuanced social critique in digital spaces.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the phenomenon of low interest in learning English among elementary school students in English subjects, which is largely caused by the use of conventional teaching materials that are less interactive and interesting. The aim of this research is to develop an interactive e-module based on Heyzine flipbook which is specifically designed to increase student involvement in the English learning process. This research uses the ADDIE model. This model consists of five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The data collection technique uses a questionnaire and is analyzed descriptively qualitatively and quantitatively. The research used test subjects with validity tests from material experts, media experts, one to one trials and small group trials. Based on the results of assessments from experts, namely media experts and material experts, with validation results, namely from material experts assessing learning media at 5, from media experts assessing learning media at 5, teacher assessments assessing learning media at 4.7, and student responses assessing learning media in one to one trials at 4.2 and small-scale trials at 4.47, thus the learning media based on the Heyzine flipbook developed is very good and worthy of being used as English learning media for elementary schools.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the connotative meanings of emotion words in Conan Gray’s Superache Album. This study focuses on identifying the types of connotative meanings associated with emotion words in the lyrics and examining how these contribute to the emotional messages conveyed in the songs. A qualitative approach, incorporating text analysis, is employed to analyse and interpret emotion words and their connotative meanings. The theories used in this study are the theory of Connotative Meaning by Leech (1981) and the Theory of Emotion Words by Kövecses (2000). The research revealed that Conan Gray’s Superache album encompasses a diverse range of emotions, with connotative meanings in its song lyrics, primarily centered around themes such as love, heartbreak, and emotional vulnerability, which are predominantly associated with the emotion of sadness. The results of the findings indicate that 10 emotion words with connotative meanings were identified in the album's lyrics, with sadness being the most dominant emotion, appearing at a frequency of 6. Negative connotations occur most frequently, followed by positive connotations. This study highlights how Conan Gray effectively communicates deep emotional and social messages through emotionally charged lyrics.

Abstract

This qualitative study explores teachers' and students' perceptions of the Three-Phase Technique (TPT) in reading instruction, a method designed to enhance reading comprehension through three distinct stages: pre-reading, while-reading, and post-reading. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 5 teachers and 10 students in senior high school, classroom observations, and document analysis. The findings reveal that both teachers and students recognized the benefits of TPT in improving reading comprehension, particularly in activating prior knowledge, maintaining focus during reading, and promoting deeper reflection post-reading. However, time constraints and the need for differentiation emerged as key challenges in its implementation. Teachers noted that adjusting the technique to meet the diverse needs of students was essential for maximizing its effectiveness. The study also highlighted the importance of metacognitive awareness, with both teachers and students emphasizing how the reflective nature of TPT encouraged students to become more self-aware of their reading strategies. These findings suggest that while TPT is a valuable tool for enhancing reading comprehension, its implementation requires thoughtful adaptation to address the unique challenges within each classroom setting.

Abstract

This study highlights the importance of politeness strategies in making requests, particularly for learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). While numerous studies have examined politeness strategies in teacher-student interactions within EFL classrooms, few have focused on EFL learners’ own perceptions and attitudes toward these strategies in making requests. This study aims to investigate how EFL learners perceive and apply politeness strategies in request speech acts in relation to their communication strategies and pragmatic awareness. Employing a quantitative descriptive design, the study involved nine students from the English Education study program who had completed the Semantics and Pragmatics course. Data were collected using a closed-ended questionnaire based on a Likert scale, developed in reference to Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory. Responses were gathered via Google Forms and analyzed using descriptive statistical methods to determine the frequency and percentage of politeness strategy preferences. The findings indicate that participants predominantly preferred positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record strategies, while bald on-record strategies were generally avoided due to their perceived impoliteness. The study concludes that EFL learners demonstrate a solid level of pragmatic competence and tend to select politeness strategies that promote respectful and harmonious communication. These findings suggest the need for more explicit instruction on pragmatic aspects of language use in EFL curricula to further enhance learners’ communicative effectiveness.

Abstract

This study examined the effect of using short movies as a teaching tool on improving writing skills in senior high school students. Writing was often a challenging skill for students, especially in traditional teaching environments, which hindered their creativity and writing proficiency. The integration of multimedia tools, such as short films, offered an innovative approach to enhancing student engagement and writing abilities. This pre-experimental study involved 30 eleventh-grade students from a senior high school in Banjarmasin, Indonesia, who were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using pre-and post-tests, focusing on narrative writing tasks before and after exposure to four short movie-based lessons. The results indicated a significant improvement in students' writing scores, with an average increase of 17.8 points. Statistical analysis using paired sample t-tests revealed a significant positive effect (p < 0.05), supporting the hypothesis that short movies could effectively enhance students' writing performance. The study concluded that short films were a valuable educational tool that not only improved writing skills but also motivated and engaged students, making writing tasks more relatable and enjoyable. These findings suggest that incorporating short movies into the curriculum could lead to better writing outcomes in senior high school English education.

Abstract

Feminist existentialism highlights the struggles women face in societies that impose restrictions based on gender and societal expectations. This study aimed to explore how the movie Hidden Figures portrays feminist existentialism ideology through the experiences and resistance of its main characters. Using a qualitative research method, the study examined the duality of the sexes and the various forms of women’s resistance as depicted in the film. Data collection was carried out through documentation and note-taking techniques. The analysis employed Simone de Beauvoir’s feminist existentialism framework as its primary theoretical foundation to examine how the movie Hidden Figures represents gender duality and feminist existentialism through the resistance of its main female characters, focusing on the identification of gender duality, the evaluation of acts of resistance, and the contextualization of these themes within the discourse of feminist existentialism. The findings reveal that Hidden Figures present a clear depiction of gender duality, where women are marginalized in workplaces, education, and social spaces. Despite these limitations, the main characters resist societal restrictions by asserting themselves in professional fields, intellectual discourse, and social transformation, aligning with the feminist existentialism concept of transcendence. Through their struggles, the film challenged traditional gender norms and contributes meaningfully to discussions on gender equality.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of code-switching that occurs in the English learning process in the informal tutoring class ProBimbel. The purpose of this study was to identify the types of code-switching used by students, the context in which code-switching occurs, and its sociolinguistic functions in teaching and learning interactions. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach, with eight prospective ProBimbel students (casis) as subjects who had an Indonesian language background and English language skills at elementary to intermediate levels. The data were collected through direct observation and audio-visual recordings of classroom activities, and were later analyzed using a systematic coding framework to identify the forms of code-switching and interpret their meanings. The results showed that intra-sentential switching was the most dominant type of code-switching (50%), followed by inter-sentential switching (25%) and tag switching (25%). The most frequent code-switching functions included clarification, expressions of misunderstanding, transitions, and opening discussions. These findings suggest that code-switching functions as an adaptive communication strategy and contextually supports the language learning process. In conclusion, code-switching is not a linguistic error but rather a reflection of developing communicative competence.
