Abstract

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that the concept of deep learning has long been inherently realized within the traditional educational practices of pesantren, even before it was formally introduced in modern academic discourse. Pesantren, as the oldest Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia, have developed a holistic learning system that integrates intellectual, spiritual, and social dimensions in a sustainable manner. This research was conducted at Pondok Pesantren Nurul Ulum Cindogo using a qualitative field research approach. Data were collected through in-depth observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, involving kyai, ustadz, administrators, and students as key informants. The findings reveal that the fundamental principles of deep learning mindful learning, meaningful learning, and joyful learning are deeply embedded in the daily life and educational practices of the pesantren. Mindful learning is reflected in the development of students’ metacognitive awareness through disciplined study habits, reflective practices, and spiritual internalization. Meaningful learning is realized through instructional methods such as sorogan and the communal living system, which connect theoretical knowledge with authentic life experiences and social responsibility. Meanwhile, joyful learning is manifested in participatory activities such as halaqah and lalaran, fostering active engagement, emotional connection, and intrinsic motivation among students. This study concludes that pesantren education not only aligns with but also predates and exemplifies the principles of deep learning. Therefore, it offers a contextual, holistic, and value-based model that can contribute significantly to the development of contemporary education

Abstract

The Qur'an is the main pillar in Islamic education, both in Indonesia and other Islamic countries such as Thailand. The rapid advancement of technology has given rise to various social challenges, such as declining literacy in reading the Qur'an. This study aims to analyze in depth how Al-Qur'an learning management is applied in MTs. Unggulan Al-Qodiri I Jember, East Java Province, Indonesia, and Samakke Islam Wittaya School, Satun Province, Thailand, with different social backgrounds of students, as well as identify the best Qur'an learning management that other educational institutions can apply. This study uses a qualitative, comparative approach to systematically examine the management of Qur'an learning in schools. Data collection was carried out through observation, documentation, and interviews. As for the results, both schools have a systematic approach to Qur'an learning through the stages of planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating. MTs. Unggulan Al-Qodiri I Jember excels in the Al-Qur'an education management system through teacher development, the use of external evaluations as a graduation requirement, and the presence of teachers with JUZ. In contrast, Samakke Islam Wittaya School excels in learning intensity and in developing students' talents. This research also formulated a synthesis model of Qur'anic learning management. By bringing together the managerial powers of two institutions, this model establishes a new standard for planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating Qur'anic learning that is more effective and adaptable.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of the school environment in shaping students’ moral character through educational interactions. It employs a qualitative approach with a case study design to explore interaction patterns within a specific school context in depth. The research subjects included 10th-grade students, Islamic Religious Education teachers, guidance and counseling teachers, and homeroom teachers. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The analysis followed an interactive model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while data validity was ensured through source and technique triangulation. The findings indicate that educational interactions play a central role in shaping students’ moral character. Classroom interactions serve not only as a medium for knowledge transfer but also as a strategic space for internalizing values such as discipline, responsibility, and mutual respect. Interactions outside the classroom, including extracurricular activities and religious practices, further strengthen character development. In addition, peer interactions contribute to the formation of social awareness and positive behavior through dynamic social influence. The novelty of this study lies in its integrative analysis of multi-contextual educational interactions, encompassing classroom, extracurricular, religious, and peer environments as a unified system in character formation. This study highlights the synergistic relationship among these interaction domains within the school ecosystem. Thus, a conducive school environment, supported by teachers’ exemplary behavior and positive social interactions, becomes a key determinant in shaping students’ moral character.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop Focusky-based IPAS learning media to improve students’ critical thinking and communication skills on the topic “Plants as a Source of Life on Earth.” The research was conducted at MI Anwarul Hidayah involving fourth-grade elementary students. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model, which includes Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation stages. The developed product was validated by material, media, and language experts, achieving scores of 80%, 91%, and 94%, respectively, with an average of 88%, indicating that the media was categorized as “feasible.” Furthermore, a limited trial involving 24 students showed a positive response rate of 97%, classified as “very feasible.” The results demonstrated that the use of Focusky-based IPAS learning media effectively enhanced students’ critical thinking skills, particularly in analyzing information, identifying cause-and-effect relationships, and drawing logical conclusions. In addition, students’ communication skills improved, as reflected in their ability to express ideas systematically, actively participate in discussions, and respond to peers’ opinions logically. Overall, the findings indicate that the developed media is effective and supports meaningful classroom learning

Abstract

This study is motivated by an epistemological crisis in modern Islamic education, characterized by the dominance of secular paradigms and the emergence of a dichotomy between religious and general sciences. This condition calls for a reconstruction of educational concepts rooted in the Islamic intellectual tradition. This research aims to analyze the concept of ta’dib in the thought of Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas and its implications for contemporary Islamic education systems. The method employed is qualitative research based on library research, using a content analysis approach on Al-Attas’ major works. The findings indicate that the concept of ta’dib is the most comprehensive educational framework, as it integrates the dimensions of knowledge, faith, and adab into a unified whole. In contrast to ta’lim and tarbiyah, which tend to be partial, ta’dib emphasizes the formation of a civilized human being (insan adabi) as the primary goal of education. Furthermore, Al-Attas criticizes secularism as the main cause of the educational crisis and proposes the Islamization of knowledge as a solution. The implications of this study suggest that the Islamic education system needs to be reconstructed by positioning adab as the fundamental foundation in both curriculum design and the learning process.

Abstract

This study aims to map strategies for integrating Islamic boarding school (pesantren) curricula with the implementation of digital learning in enhancing the quality of Islamic education in the Society 5.0 era. Employing a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method guided by the PRISMA framework, this study analyzes 27 scholarly articles indexed in SINTA and Scopus published between 2020 and 2026. The findings of the literature synthesis reveal that the integration strategy is implemented through a subject-based curriculum model that aligns kitab kuning (classical Islamic texts) with digital competency standards without compromising the distinctive identity of pesantren. The digital ecosystem is developed through the adoption of smart classrooms, digital edutainment, and adaptive instructional leadership. Despite challenges such as infrastructure disparities and cultural resistance, managerial solutions through the boarding school model and digitally based academic supervision have proven effective in mitigating these risks. This study concludes that the transformation of the quality of Islamic education depends on the institutional capacity to balance spiritual traditions with globally competitive 21st-century skills.

Abstract

Contemporary Islamic education faces critical challenges, including the dichotomy of knowledge, moral degradation, and the weakening of educational authority amid unfiltered globalization. This study aims to analyze the educational thought of K.H. Imam Zarkasyi as an alternative solution and to formulate an integrative conceptual model for contemporary Islamic education. Specifically, it examines curriculum conceptualization, teaching methods, and the repositioning of educators’ roles. The research is situated within Islamic educational thought, particularly pesantren-based education, focusing on the Kulliyatul Mu’allimin al-Islamiyah (KMI) system. It employs a qualitative approach using a library research model, drawing on primary and secondary sources. Data are collected through documentation and analyzed descriptively to construct a systematic understanding. The findings reveal that Imam Zarkasyi developed an integrative curriculum based on the principle of “100% religious and 100% general knowledge,” effectively eliminating the dichotomy of science. His pedagogical approach emphasizes holistic learning through exemplary conduct (uswah hasanah) and a continuous educational environment (bi’ah tarbawiyah). Moreover, educators are repositioned not merely as instructors, but as mu’allim, murabbi, and mu’addib grounded in the values of the Panca Jiwa. These findings underline the relevance of his thought in addressing contemporary educational challenges and fostering intellectually and morally grounded Muslim generations.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze educational participation in North Sumatra Province at the primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary education levels during the period of 2020–2024 based on the indicators of Gross Enrollment Rate (GER) and Net Enrollment Rate (NER). The study employed a descriptive quantitative approach using a quadrant-based analysis method. Secondary data were obtained from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Indonesia and analyzed by comparing the GER and NER of North Sumatra Province with national average indicators at each educational level and year of observation. The findings reveal that primary education consistently falls into Quadrant I (high GER and high NER), indicating broad and age-appropriate educational participation. Junior secondary education tends to fall into Quadrant III (relatively lower GER and high NER), reflecting effective participation among students within the ideal school-age group despite relatively limited overall access. Meanwhile, senior secondary education is categorized into Quadrant II (high GER and low NER), indicating age-grade distortion and delayed educational participation. The study concludes that educational participation at the primary level in North Sumatra has been relatively equitable and effective, while challenges remain at the secondary level, particularly regarding age-appropriate participation and continuity of educational access. These findings imply the importance of quadrant-based educational policies to improve equitable, inclusive, and sustainable educational participation.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the implementation of the role-play method in Fiqh learning, specifically regarding buying and selling (buy and sell) materials, and its influence on developing students' financial literacy at MI NU Miftahul Ulum Kejapanan Pasuruan. The study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with Fiqh teachers and sixth-grade students, and documentation. The data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman interactive model, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that the implementation of the role-play method significantly enhances students' financial literacy across three dimensions: knowledge, attitudes, and skills. Students demonstrated a better understanding of Fiqh concepts, internalizing values such as honesty (sidq), justice (‘adl), and responsibility (amanah), while successfully practicing transaction procedures. In conclusion, the role-play method effectively transforms teacher-centered learning into an active, participatory, and meaningful experience. The implication of this research suggests that integrating experiential learning methods like role-play into Islamic education can bridge the gap between theoretical religious concepts and practical economic life, providing a foundation for students to face modern financial challenges based on Sharia principles.
