Abstract

As an English lecturer who presents and explains material using English in the class, it is important to know the students’ perceptions about this method. This article aims to discover students’ perceptions of the use of English in the English class. Data were collected through a questionnaire containing 15 questions which were close-ended. The result indicates that students prefer the lecturer to use Indonesian as the instruction language to explain grammar or vocabulary because it makes them feel more comfortable, understand better, more confident in the learning process. However, the lecture’s use of English did not significantly impact students’ motivation and participation to learn English.

Abstract

This article explores the multifaceted challenges facing English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education in Indonesia, focusing on the interplay between national policy, curriculum implementation, and classroom practices. Employing a systematic literature review (SLR) methodology, this study synthesizes findings from academic publications, government reports, and international research from 2004 to 2024. The analysis reveals persistent issues, including policy-practice gaps, limited teacher training, resource disparities, and insufficient attention to local contexts in curriculum development. Additionally, classroom-level obstacles such as mixed-ability learners, low motivation, and lack of authentic materials hinder effective language instruction. The study emphasizes the need for adaptive pedagogical approaches, continuous professional development, and a more localized curriculum design. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of EFL complexities in Indonesia and offer insights for policymakers, educators, and researchers committed to enhancing English education across diverse regions.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the types and causes of grammatical errors in students’ speaking performances, analyzed using the linguistic category framework. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data collected through a speaking test (in a question-and-answer format) and interviews. Participants were selected through judgmental sampling and consisted of one English teacher and ten second-year students from a senior high school in Bone Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The grammatical errors were categorized into two main types: morphological and syntactical. Morphological errors included mistakes in the use of inflections, articles, prepositions, and pronouns, with pronoun and article misuse being the most frequent. Syntactical errors involved incorrect usage of copulas, subject-verb agreement, adjective order, and tenses, with tense-related errors occurring most commonly. The analysis also revealed several contributing factors to these errors, including students’ difficulty in understanding and internalizing grammar rules, limited exposure to correct grammatical forms, insufficient speaking practice, and low motivation to engage in grammar-based speaking activities. These findings underscore the importance of more targeted and engaging grammar instruction in speaking-focused English learning environments.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of parenting style and environment on workplace mindset. Workplace mindset is a mindset that influences how individuals respond to challenges, work in teams, and adapt to organizational dynamics. This study uses a quantitative approach with the Partial Least Square (PLS 3.0) analysis method, involving 100 respondents from various regions in Central Java. The results showed that parenting style and environment significantly influenced workplace mindset, with an R-square value of 0.505, which means that both variables are able to explain 50.5% of the variation in individual work mindsets. These findings indicate that childhood experiences through parenting style and the influence of the social environment such as relationships and lifestyle have an important role in shaping a person's professional attitudes and ways of thinking. Therefore, the development of a positive work mindset needs to consider psychosocial aspects from an early age. Practically, organizations and educational institutions are encouraged to integrate character-building programs that emphasize emotional intelligence and adaptive thinking from a young age to support long-term professional development.

Abstract

Death as a literary theme has long served as a reflection on life, existence, and cultural values. This study investigates how social traditions legitimize inherited violence in Shirley Jackson's The Lottery, arguing that the story represents death not as a natural or inevitable occurrence, but as a culturally sanctioned and ideologically constructed event. Employing a qualitative content analysis grounded in structuralist and deconstructive theory, the research examines how meaning is produced through recurring symbols—the black box, stones, and ritual—revealing the mechanisms by which violence becomes normalized within communal structures. By integrating structuralist attention to narrative systems with deconstruction’s critique of fixed meaning, this study contributes to literary scholarship by demonstrating how Jackson’s story functions as a critique of social complicity and ritualized violence. Theoretically, the paper advances discussions on the intersection of ideology, tradition, and power in literary representations of death, offering insights into how fiction can expose the constructed nature of social norms and the ethical consequences of collective obedience.

Abstract

This study analyzes the characterization and psychoanalytic dynamics of two main characters in the Hannibal TV Series Season I: Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham. Using Freud’s psychoanalytic theory—specifically the concepts of Id, Ego, and Superego—the research applies a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected from selected scenes and dialogues to interpret character traits and the psychological relationship between the two. The characterization is presented through both “showing” and “telling” techniques in the narrative. These methods help reveal the internal psychological drives influencing each character. The analysis finds that Hannibal is primarily driven by the Id, often ignoring the functions of the Ego and Superego. This leads him to act impulsively, manipulatively, and without moral restraint. In contrast, Will Graham demonstrates a stronger influence of Ego and Superego, showing moral awareness and rational judgment, though his psychological stability is gradually eroded due to Hannibal’s manipulation. The results indicate that Hannibal holds psychological dominance in the relationship. His Id-driven behavior allows him to control and reshape Will’s perception and emotional state. This research contributes to the understanding of how psychoanalytic elements can influence character development and interpersonal dynamics in visual media narratives.
