Abstract

In this study, the method used is descriptive qualitative, which aims to explore and understand the meaning and views of the community towards traditional healing practices that are developing among the Karo community. This study shows that the practice of traditional kuning medicine in the Karo community is not only a form of disease treatment, but also a manifestation of ecological knowledge and local wisdom reflected in language. Through ecolinguistic studies, it was found that the lexicon used to refer to various types of medicinal plants in the kuning potion contains interrelated cultural, ecological, and linguistic values. A total of 22 names of medicinal plants that were successfully identified have local names that are typical in the Karo language, such as bahing (ginger), mburle (bangle), and ladʒa (black turmeric). Each lexicon not only indicates a particular plant species, but also contains information about the parts of the plant used, the medicinal function, and the symbolic meaning in community practices.

Abstract

Using Van Dijk's socio-cognitive approach, this study examines ten feminist-themed memes from Pinterest, emphasizing the discursive, cognitive, and social elements. Three main themes emerge from the analysis of the memes: criticism of gender expectations, assertion of women's strength, and resistance to male control. The results show that women reject male control and dominance in memes under the first group (1.1; 1.3; 1.9), emphasizing female independence and resilience. The second category's memes (1.2, 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6) highlight women's strength and independence, demonstrating their capacity to subvert conventional wisdom and reinterpret social norms. The third category (1.7; 1.8; 1.10), on the other hand, criticizes what society expects of women and shows them as defying patriarchal stereotypes. This change demonstrates how digital discourse has developed into a platform that questions established hierarchies of power and encourages social criticism. These memes are vital resources for advancing feminist principles, empowering women, and raising awareness of gender equality because they use sarcasm and comedy. According to the study's findings, memes are more than just amusement; they are potent cultural artifacts that have the capacity to shape public opinion and promote constructive social change.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the relationship between scat singing vocal improvisation techniques and the development of vocal interpretation in a traditional Batak Karo song entitled Mbiring manggis . The scat singing technique, which comes from the jazz vocal tradition, is rarely used in the context of folk songs. Therefore, its application in the song Mbiring mangosteen offers a new approach in enriching the traditional vocal arrangement style. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and musical exploration conducted in the process of rehearsal and song recording. The results showed that the application of scat singing can improve the singer's musical expression through rhythmic flexibility, improvisational syllable selection, and strengthening the meaning of emotions in the lyrics. The vocal interpretations not only retain the original characteristics of Karo songs, but also create new musical colors that can reach modern audiences. This research recommends further exploration of the collaboration of jazz vocal techniques and traditional music as a strategy for preservation and innovation.

Abstract

This study identifies several key factors that contribute to the declination of interest: (1) the limitations of learning materials that are less innovative and adaptive, resulting in saturation and demotivation of learning; (2) the lack of platforms and competition opportunities, which reduces the incentive for students to showcase and develop their capabilities; and (3) the prevalence of other more popular musical instrument choices, such as acoustic and electric guitars, which distract from the unique characteristics of classical guitars. To revitalize the younger generation's interest in classical guitars, innovative strategies in teaching methodologies, the provision of more opportunities for practice and competition, as well as the prominence of the uniqueness and intrinsic excellence of classical guitars are considered essential. This research contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of musical interest in the modern era and provides practical recommendations for the preservation and development of classical guitar art among the younger generation.
