Mohammad Hatta is not only known as a national figure and the first Indonesian vice president, but also a faithful, active individual in the field of Islamic education. He also expresses his idea regarding Islamic education in papers. Islamic education discourse still emerges as an important discussion topic today. In this case, it is necessary to provide a representative, modern Islamic education in order to deliver ideal Muslim scholars. The study found that the construct of Mohammad Hatta’s idea on modern Islamic education was to create coherence between religion and modern science, comprising sociology, history, and philosophy. Such an idea is not merely an abstract, it was applied through the establishment of Sekolah Tinggi Islam (Islamic College) in 1945 as a modern Islamic higher education.

Abstract

It is interesting to re-discuss the controversy about something claimed as a prophetic tradition (al-Hadîth), especially when it is related to its explanatory-doctrinal function to al-Qur’ân and to its implication for essential Islamic doctrines. The account of Gharâniq claimed by some experts as a prophetic tradition is one of the models of old cases, but it remains to produce a religious discourse colored with pros and cons. Some experts believe in the existence and validity of the account of Gharâniq, some others reject it partly or with “notes”, and the others reject it totally. This article tries to analyze critically the account of Gharâniq by exploring literatures on exegesis and traditions in order to discuss and treat this topic more proportionally.

Abstract

The study of wihhdtul adyan thoughts which is often identified with religious pluralism has recently attracted the attention of academics, researchers, and reviewers of religions. The issue of wihdatul adyan, by some parties forcibly tried to be juxtaposed and equated with the wihdatul wujud thought conceptualized by a Sufi figure such as al-Hallaj. This paper intends to examine the model and practice of Sufism in the person of Abu Mansur Al-Hallaj, who is referred to by some as the bearer of the idea of religious pluralism. This paper is also qualitative research with a philosophical-theological approach and concludes that; First, Al-Hallaj is not the originator and bearer of the idea of religious pluralism in Islam, this is supported by several opinions of Sufis about Al-Hallaj. Second, Al-Hallaj acknowledged that there are differences in religion, not equality of religions (read: all religions are true) because in his childhood he experienced religious diversity in his family environment. Third, the claim against Al-Hallaj as the originator or father of religious pluralism is an excessive and irresponsible title, because what Al-Hallaj did is not under the alleged claim. This study provides an understanding that wihdatul wujud which is identical to the person of Al-Hallaj is not the meaning of wihdatul adyan which is often referred to as religious pluralism as claimed by some academics.
