Abstract

This article attends to the continued silence over the perspectives of followers on morality which persists particularly concerning women. The insights of women are especially salient given the participation of women in Pentecostal churches as well as the incidents of abuse largely orchestrated by male leaders. Despite the sparse attention afforded to ethics and morality in contemporary Pentecostal practice, moral complexities animate the arena largely drawn from Biblical teachings and church guidance. The paper discusses women’s perceptions of one such moral question via egoism. Egoism has roots in classical Greek philosophy and although dated, continues to serve as a useful framework in which to think about morality. Drawing from the perceptions of women at a Pretoria-based church branch of the Apostolic Faith Mission, the paper suggests that egoism was generally understood as reprehensible. However, away from idealised moral injunctions, egoism is more complexly engaged by the female members, with secrecy forming one mechanism of retaining egoism albeit away from the collegial gaze. The article adds to an empirical gap while setting up a puzzle in the scholarship of how Pentecostals moralize their daily lives.

Abstract

Learning English is very important in the era of globalisation, especially for non-native speakers who want to master English language skills. In the field of education, English as a Foreign Language (EFL) is becoming increasingly important as it is considered an essential skill. Along with the increasing need for English in educational institutions, such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is used to measure students' abilities and identify areas that need improvement. This study aims to investigate students' English proficiency using Rasch Model analysis on the TOEFL ITP test. This study used a quantitative approach with data analysed using Winstep 3.73 software. The results showed that students were successful in answering long logical inference questions and short dialogue restatements on listening comprehension, as well as clause questions on written structures & expressions. On reading comprehension, students successfully answered reference questions, vocabulary in context, unstated details, and implied details. This study also found that all subtests on the TOEFL ITP have good reliability and suitability. In conclusion, Rasch Model analysis is effective in identifying the types of TOEFL questions that affect student success, as well as ensuring that the subtests used are reliable and appropriate for the measurement of English language skills.

Abstract

This study investigates the intersection of political advertising and adherence to regulatory codes within Nigerian elections, with a specific focus on the 2023 presidential election. Political advertising plays a crucial role in electoral campaigns, leveraging various platforms, including social media, to reach and influence voters. However, concerns arise regarding the compliance of these advertisements with the ethical guidelines set by the Nigeria Broadcasting Cod (NBC), Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This research aims to evaluate the extent to which political advertisements adhered to these codes and to assess the impact of the legal frameworks on political marketing strategies. This paper examines political marketing by utilizing research from various journals and papers, focusing on how politicians adhere to the rules and regulations provided by regulatory bodies. Preliminary findings suggest that while some political advertisements complied with NBC, ARCON and INEC regulations, numerous instances of non-compliance were evident, particularly in the use of misinformation and exploitative rhetoric. The study also highlights the challenges faced by regulatory bodies in enforcing these codes effectively. Moreover, the research explores how legal constraints influence the strategies of political marketers, revealing a tension between adherence to ethical guidelines and the competitive pressures of election campaigns. The findings underscore the need for stronger enforcement mechanisms, greater transparency, and enhanced public awareness to ensure ethical political advertising practices. This study contributes to the broader discourse on political communication and democratic integrity, offering insights and recommendations for improving regulatory frameworks and fostering more ethical political marketing in Nigeria.

Abstract

Everyone is constantly developing, starting from infancy, adolescence, and adulthood. As we enter the early adult stage, one of our developmental responsibilities is to begin a new role as a partner, which involves choosing a partner. The choice of a partner is generally associated with a father figure who will be a role model in choosing a partner. Every daughter needs a father figure, but not all girls can experience this due to the physical and psychological absence of a father, a condition known as fatherlessness. This study aims to describe the partner selection process among early adult women who have experienced fatherlessness in orphanages. Respondents in this study were early adult women aged 18–25 who already had a partner. The study employed a qualitative research method, incorporating a phenomenological approach. Data collection methods include semi-structured interviews. Respondents in this study totaled two people. The data analysis results indicate that while both respondents have different focuses and approaches when choosing a partner, they share a common view regarding the importance of core values and emotional support in a healthy relationship.
