Abstract

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a pivotal role in global trade, but they face significant challenges, particularly in managing payment risks. This study investigates the role of Letters of Credit (LCs) in enhancing payment security and financial stability for SMEs in international trade, using a case study of PT. ATN, an SME located in Batu Malang, Indonesia. The research aims to explore how LCs mitigate payment risks, improve operational stability, and facilitate participation in global markets. A qualitative research methodology was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews and documentary analysis. Data were analyzed thematically to identify key challenges, benefits, and the broader implications of LC utilization. The study also examined the operational processes involved in LC issuance, including the critical role of banks as intermediaries. The findings reveal that LCs significantly reduce payment uncertainties and enhance cash flow stability for SMEs. By ensuring payment through third-party bank guarantees, LCs provide a financial safety net that enables SMEs to focus on market expansion and productivity improvements. However, challenges such as stringent documentation requirements and complex procedures hinder their wider adoption. Institutional support, including trade fairs and export facilitation programs, was identified as critical in connecting SMEs with international buyers and supporting LC usage. This study contributes to the existing literature by providing empirical insights into the practical applications and challenges of LCs in emerging markets. It underscores the need for targeted training and the integration of digital technologies to streamline LC processes. These findings have important implications for policymakers and financial institutions seeking to empower SMEs in the global trade landscape

Abstract

UMKM (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) play a crucial role in Indonesia's economy, as evidenced during the economic crisis of 1997/1998, when many large companies failed while UMKM remained resilient. The success of UMKM in facing this crisis demonstrates their better adaptability, supported by flexible organizational structures and workforce. Probolinggo Regency, known for its rich natural and cultural potential, hosts many UMKM that have developed in both quality and quantity. Entrepreneurs in this region utilize local resources to offer quality products through street vendors, cafes, and restaurants. This study aims to explore the significance of UMKM in a region, identify the factors that hinder and promote UMKM growth, and analyze the development of the UMKM sector in Probolinggo. The analysis indicates that UMKM not only create jobs and improve the living standards of the community but also serve as custodians of local culture. Despite facing various challenges, such as limited capital, managerial skills, and location constraints, support from the government and financial institutions can strengthen UMKM growth. Data shows that after a significant decline due to the COVID-19 pandemic, UMKM in Probolinggo began to show signs of recovery in 2022, with an increase in the number of enterprises. This reflects a positive dynamic in the local economic recovery.

Abstract

Good corporate governance is the key to a company's long-term survival. Many BUMDes have died because they do not implement good corporate governance. The purpose of this study is to analyse the increase in performance effectiveness as an effort to sustain Village-Owned Enterprises in the Ngargoyoso Region, Karanganyar Regency. This type of research is qualitative with data collection techniques, namely interviews, observation and documentation. The analysis used is descriptive with the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. Data validity techniques include credibility tests and dependability tests. The results of the study are that Good Corporate Governance has not been implemented optimally and has not experienced optimal improvement. This is indicated by the effectiveness of BUMDes in achieving goals that have not been optimal overall. Most BUMDes have not succeeded in providing village original income according to target, which is caused by several factors such as limited capital, tight business competition, and low public awareness of the role of BUMDes. The effectiveness of BUMDes in managing resources has mostly been running well, although there are some that have not been fully optimal in managing village assets, such as many assets that have not been utilized optimally. Most BUMDes have routinely conducted internal evaluations with the village government at the end of each month. This evaluation is important to assess BUMDes performance periodically and provide opportunities for operational improvement. The majority of the community has felt the benefits of programs run by BUMDes. The Berjo Village community, for example, received assistance distributed to each hamlet for the Independence Day celebration activities.
