Abstract

Arabic, as a foreign language in Nigeria, is predominantly taught within formal school environments where students often face persistent challenges in reading comprehension. These difficulties are largely attributed to the dominance of traditional grammar–translation methods, limited exposure to authentic texts, and reliance on outdated instructional practices. This study critically examines and synthesizes effective teaching methods, instructional strategies, and classroom techniques that can enhance Arabic reading comprehension in Nigerian secondary schools, where Arabic is neither a native nor widely spoken language. Adopting a conceptual and literature-based approach, the research analyses scholarly publications, curriculum documents, and relevant educational theories on Arabic instruction in non-Arabic-speaking contexts. The findings indicate that a hybrid model—combining the Direct Method and the Reading Method, reinforced by explicit strategy instruction (e.g., summarisation, questioning, re-reading) and practical techniques (e.g., reading aloud, visual aids, technology integration)—can significantly improve comprehension outcomes, vocabulary acquisition, critical thinking, and learner motivation. The study concludes that contextually responsive integration of method, strategy, and technique offers a transformative framework for Arabic reading instruction in Nigeria. This contribution provides an adaptable instructional model for teachers and serves as a valuable reference for curriculum developers and policymakers in language education reform.

Abstract

Literacy is a crucial aspect of education, particularly in the digital era. This research is motivated by the current challenges faced in Indonesian schools, namely the low level of students’ critical thinking skills. Along with the rapid development of digital technology, the challenges related to literacy are becoming increasingly significant. The purpose of this study is to explore the innovation of implementing digital-based media to enhance literacy at SMK Farmasi YPIB, Kedawung District, Cirebon Regency. Specifically, it aims to investigate the process of planning, implementation, evaluation, as well as the strengths and obstacles encountered during the implementation process. This research employs a qualitative method with a naturalistic descriptive approach, by describing the data in accordance with the activities occurring in the field. In interpreting this naturalistic research, the researcher conducted an in-depth and comprehensive investigation of various activities taking place during the learning process. The findings reveal that the implementation process was highly structured, as evidenced by careful planning, which included preparing lesson plans (RPP), uploading materials prior to classroom sessions, and designing innovative teaching media. The learning implementation became more interactive, encouraging students to engage in critical thinking when analyzing relevant information through assigned analytical tasks. In conclusion, the implementation of digital-based media in PAIB subjects for grade XI students at SMK Farmasi YPIB, Kedawung District, Cirebon, proved effective in improving students’ literacy. This was demonstrated by students’ active participation in learning. However, literacy levels remain relatively limited due to several factors that require greater emphasis and optimization, particularly in fostering consistent habits of utilizing digital media.

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of Muhammad Abduh’s educational thought in the context of Islamic education during the era of globalization. Abduh, as one of the prominent Muslim reformers, emphasized the integration of religious sciences with modern knowledge, rejecting the dichotomy between Islamic education and general education. Using a qualitative library research method, this article analyzes Abduh’s intellectual legacy and its relevance to contemporary challenges in Islamic education, such as technological advancement, unresponsive curricula, and incompetent educators. The findings highlight that Abduh’s ideas on curriculum adjustment, critical and active learning methodologies, and universal access to education provide significant solutions to current educational problems. His vision underlines the necessity of balancing religious and secular knowledge to produce students who are not only intellectually capable but also morally grounded. The study concludes that revitalizing Abduh’s thought is crucial for the sustainability and competitiveness of Islamic education in the modern global era.

Abstract

This study aims to: (1) identify the suitability of experiential learning methods in Islamic Religious Education on religious moderation; (2) explore the values of religious moderation that need to be internalized in PAI learning; and (3) analyze the challenges and opportunities of implementing experiential learning in strengthening the values of religious moderation in the PAI learning environment. This study uses a qualitative approach with library research methods, focusing on theoretical literature reviews. Data collection techniques were carried out through documentation with strict selection of literature sources, while data validity was obtained through source triangulation and member checking. Data analysis was conducted using a thematic approach and comparative analysis based on content analysis. The results of the study indicate that experiential learning in PAI learning is characterized by direct experience-based learning, observational reflection, abstract conceptualization, active experimentation, contextual learning, and the integration of multiple intelligences. The internalized values of religious moderation include: tolerance (tasamuh), justice (‘adl), balance (tawazun), moderation (wasathiyyah), dialogue (hiwar), wisdom (hikmah), and peace (salam). The challenges in its implementation include limitations in teacher competence, stakeholder resistance, infrastructure limitations, curriculum complexity, and differences in interpretation. Meanwhile, the opportunities are supported by government policies, increasing awareness of the importance of moderation, and the use of learning technology.

Abstract

The integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into education has become increasingly important for enhancing teaching effectiveness and learner engagement, particularly in language education. This study investigated the availability, utilisation, retention challenges, and instructional impact of ICT tools in the teaching of Arabic language in secondary schools in Kwara State. The primary purpose of the study was to assess how the sustained use of ICT tools influences instructional practices, students’ academic performance, and interest in Arabic language learning. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised Arabic language teachers and senior secondary school students in Kwara State, from which a sample of 200 respondents was selected using random sampling techniques. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analysed using mean scores and chi-square statistical tests. The findings revealed that ICT tools are largely unavailable and rarely utilised in Arabic language teaching across the sampled schools. However, both teachers and students strongly perceived ICT as effective in improving students’ comprehension, pronunciation, motivation, and academic performance in Arabic. Major challenges identified include unreliable electricity supply, lack of technical support, high maintenance costs, inadequate teacher training, and insufficient curricular support. The study concludes that while ICT has significant potential to enhance Arabic language teaching and learning, its impact is constrained by systemic and infrastructural challenges. The study contributes to existing literature by highlighting the importance of ICT retention and sustainability, rather than mere availability, in improving Arabic language education in secondary schools.
