Abstract

This study aims to analyze Sufistic interpretations in Sīrah Nabawīyah from the book al-Syifā' by al-Qāḍī ’Iyāḍ. The focus of the study is on the interpretation of the Qur'anic verses on the virtues of the Prophet Muhammad. This study is important because it reveals the Sufistic dimension that has received less attention in research on the interpretation and narration of Sīrah in al-Syifā'. The research method is qualitative based on a literature study, with data collection techniques through primary text analysis, namely al-Syifā' and secondary in the form of several Sufi tafsir books, as well as various authoritative books and articles. The findings of this study include: (1) al-Qāḍī ‘Iyāḍ not only quotes the Sufi interpretations of Sufi commentators such as al-Tustarī, al-Sulamī, al-Samarqandī, but also actively organizes them with the bi al-ma'ṡūr approach and the isyārī and naẓarī methods so that readers can directly receive the Sufistic meaning of the Sīrah through the narration of al-Syifā’. (2) Thus, al-Syifā' becomes an essential representation of the integration between normative and Sufistic interpretive traditions and enriches the discourse of Sufistic interpretation in the study of the Prophetic Sīrah, especially in the context of classical interpretation.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the meaning of the warak ngendhog symbol through Dilthey's hermeneutics and its relevance to Islamic economic principles. The method chosen in this research is qualitative with field studies. Data were collected through interviews, non-participatory observation and documentation, then analyzed using Wilhelm Dilthey's hermeneutics through three aspects: experience (erlebniz), expression (ausdruck), and deep understanding (verstehen). The results are then connected descriptively with the principles of Islamic economics. The research findings are that the Warak Ngendhog symbol contains religious, social, aesthetic and political values. According to Dilthey's hermeneutics, every series of dugderan including the Warak Ngendhog symbol provides an experience of the historicity of the tradition, expression, and understanding of the culture. Furthermore, in the context of Islamic economic principles, Warak Ngendhog reflects the value of tawhid through the unity of cultural diversity, the principle of justice ('adl) in socio-economic activities, the principle of nubuwwah (sidiq, amanah, tabligh, and fathanah), describing the role of khilafah in the management of a just economy and ma'ad as a spiritual awareness of the blessing and accountability of charity. This tradition serves as a cultural preservation and Islamic economic education media that integrates social, religious, and economic aspects in the lives of the people of Semarang city.

Abstract

This article aims to examine Muhammad Iqbal’s contribution to shaping a hermeneutical paradigm of hadith as a response to the stagnation of Islamic textual interpretation, which has often been rigid and ahistorical. Rooted in the realities of Islamic intellectual modernization and the influence of Western civilization, Iqbal proposes a hermeneutical approach to reconstructing hadith understanding in a more contextual, dynamic, and relevant manner for contemporary challenges. This study employs a qualitative method, utilising a library research approach, to explore Iqbal’s works and the thoughts of contemporary Islamic hermeneutics scholars. The main findings reveal that Iqbal not only distinguishes legal hadith from pre-Islamic traditions but also emphasizes the importance of dialogue between the text, its historical context, and modern audiences. Iqbal’s contribution lies in his assertion that hadith, as prophetic revelation, must be interpreted creatively and transformatively to produce a universal and humanistic form of Sharia. This study enriches hadith scholarship by positioning hermeneutics as a relevant interpretive method in the development of progressive Islamic thought.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the transcendental ethical dimension in the Sufi tradition through a philosophical examination of two key concepts: zuhud (asceticism, spirituality) and tazkiyah al-nafs (purification of the soul). This research is motivated by the phenomenon of contemporary life characterized by materialism, consumerism, and digital disruption that often erode human spiritual values. Instant lifestyles, an orientation towards instant gratification, and the increasing moral crisis indicate an urgent need to reintroduce transcendental values as a counterbalance. In this context, the concepts of zuhud and tazkiyah an-nafs in the treasury of Islamic Sufism are considered relevant for philosophical study. This article uses an Islamic philosophical approach and hermeneutic analysis. This research highlights the relevance of Sufi spiritual values in addressing the ethical and spiritual crises that plague contemporary life. The concept of asceticism in Sufism is not merely understood as a rejection of the world, but also as a form of inner discipline that balances human relations with God and the world. Meanwhile, tazkiyah an-nafs serves as a foundation for ethical transformation, emphasizing self-honesty, controlling desires, and purifying life's orientation. In a modern context characterized by hedonism, consumerism, and existential alienation, these values offer an alternative paradigm for building a holistic self-awareness and a life ethic oriented toward spiritual depth. This study concludes that transcendental ethics in Sufism can function as both cultural critique and a moral foundation for facing the challenges of humanity in the present era.

Abstract

Corruption is a serious problem that undermines the social, political, and moral order of society, including in Indonesia. While the term “corruption” is not explicitly mentioned in the Quran, several terms, such as “gulul” (betrayal of a trust) and “as-suḥt” (bribery/illicit wealth), are closely related to corrupt practices. This study aims to analyze the verses of the Qur'an related to this phenomenon, especially QS. Āli ‘Imrān [3]: 161 and QS. al-Mā’idah [5]: 42, through Abdullah Saeed's contextual interpretation approach. The research method used is library research with primary sources in the form of the Qur'an and the works of Abdullah Saeed, as well as secondary sources in the form of classical interpretations, contemporary interpretations, and previous research that discusses the issue of corruption from an Islamic perspective. The results of the study show that classical to modern exegetes such as al-Ṭabarī, al-Qurṭubī, as-Shabuni and others interpret gulûl as betrayal in the distribution of war booty and as-suḥt as a form of bribery that undermines legal justice. Through a contextual approach, Abdullah Saeed expands the meaning of these two terms to make them relevant to contemporary corruption issues, namely all forms of abuse of public trust, embezzlement of assets, and bribery practices within the modern legal and bureaucratic systems. Thus, this study confirms that the Qur'an not only provides a moral prohibition against corrupt practices but also offers applicable social ethical principles to support corruption eradication in the modern era.

Abstract

Global challenges are becoming increasingly difficult to address, largely due to competition between major world powers and conflicts rooted in identity. These dynamicspose significant risks to peace, security, and well-being both within countries and internationally. This study aims to assess the role of religion in contributing to the development and humanitarian efforts at global and national levels through a qualitative analysis, the study examines the G20 forum, which includes the world’s major economies, to explore how religious influences shape global policies and initiatives. The discussion highlights four key functions of religion: strengthening unity, promoting interfaith dialogue to counter the misuse of religion in politics, opposing wars while supporting victims of conflict, and encouraging ethical behavior to ensure lasting peace. On a national level, with a specific focus on Indonesia, religion has historically served to advance the concept of ‘maslahah’ (the public good) and now holds an increasingly vital role in shaping political systems. Because of upcoming humanitarian missions, this analysis emphasizes the need for spiritual values to be integrated into efforts to enhance global harmony. It also calls for reflection on how effectively these values are being put into practice to support peace and solidarity across nations.

Abstract

Human life is inextricably linked to love, whether it is needing or giving love to oneself or to others, because in order to achieve happiness, humans need love. The purpose of this article is to compare the concept of love in the views of Imam Ghazali and Erich Fromm, both of whom are leading figures in the fields of Sufism and existentialist philosophy. This article uses a qualitative research method with a literature review approach sourced from books, articles, and information data relevant to the discussion of the concept of love. The results of this study are as follows: First, the concept of love in Imam Ghazali's view means enjoyment that requires effort. Love for Allah is absolute love through the medium of love for oneself, love for fellow human beings, and love for the beauty created by Allah. Second, the concept of love in Erich Fromm's view is one of the solutions to overcome feelings of separation and alienation. Third, the implementation of love for fellow human beings in Imam Ghazali's view means that every human being must behave fairly, be forgiving, give advice, and be generous, which is manifested in human relationships. Meanwhile, in Erich Fromm's view, love for fellow human beings can be manifested in the form of knowledge, respect, care, and responsibility.
