Abstract

Abstract

The abuse of religious authority occurring in several Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in East Java has been widely reported by various mass media outlets; however, it has received insufficient in-depth analysis from academics. Consequently, the phenomenon of sexual violence rooted in the power relations of the Kiai (religious leader) has never been seriously addressed by the government. It should be emphasized that this research does not intend to make generalizations and focuses solely on case studies of five problematic pesantren.Using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, critical discourse analysis and sociology of knowledge approach, several key points were identified.  First, the weakness of government oversight and the strengthening doctrine of mystical logic serve as the dominant factors explaining the immense power held by the Kiai within pesantren institutions. Second, in response to this crisis, a wave of resistance has emerged from various elements of civil society. This manifests through two primary channels. (1)  Internal channels: survivors among the female students (santriwati) have engaged in peer-to-peer communication, self-isolation for protection, and strategic collaborations with lawyers and prosecutor, NGOs, and the mass media to voice the truth (2) External channels: residents of East Java have demanded firm state action, including the implementation of chemical castration, the revocation of operational licenses for problematic pesantren, and curriculum reform aimed at dismantling patriarchy and violence. These conclusions demonstrate that sexual violence in pesantren is not merely a matter of individual morality; it is a systemic issue that necessitates legal intervention, rigorous state supervision, and the deconstruction of doctrines that undermine the human rights of female students

Abstract

Discourse on tolerance in Islamic studies has thus far tended to be anthropocentric, limited to interfaith relations, and has paid insufficient attention to the cosmic dimension that also shapes religious ethics. There is a significant research gap regarding how Islamic texts address cosmic and ecological dimensions, leaving a conceptual void in applying religious ethics to the global environmental crisis. This article aims to reinterpret the story of Prophet Solomon in the Qur’an as a foundation for cross-cosmic tolerance that involves the relationships between humans, non-humans, and the structure of the universe. This study employs a qualitative approach using Izzat Darwazah’s tartīb nuzūlī method to understand the context of revelation, as well as Ferdinand de Saussure’s semiotic analysis to uncover the sign structure (signifier–signified) in the story of Prophet Solomon, particularly in Surah Ṣ ād and Surah al-Naml. Through sign analysis, the study identified three main findings: 1) Prophet Solomon’s relationship with the ants establishes an ethical model that advocates for vulnerable/marginalized entities and acknowledges their right to ecological sustainability. 2) His interaction with the hoopoe demonstrates just leadership that rejects absolute domination and prioritizes epistemic tolerance grounded in rational accountability. 3) Prophet Solomon’s relationships with the ants, the hoopoe, the jinn, the wind, and the Queen of Sheba represent a model of tolerance not based on domination, but rather on the recognition of the agency, rationality, and dignity of every cosmic entity. This story affirms that tolerance in the Qur’an is not merely a passive attitude toward difference, but an active strategy grounded in knowledge, symbols, and transformative spiritual experience. The tartib nuzūlī approach demonstrates a narrative shift from refuting political arrogance (mid-Makkiyah) toward a science-based cosmic diplomatic strategy (late-Makkiyah). The story of Prophet Solomon offers an active and holistic ecosentric ethical paradigm, relevant for addressing contemporary humanitarian and ecological crises

Abstract

The concept of qiwāmah in Islamic tradition has often been associated with male authority within a patriarchal marital structure, an interpretation that insufficiently captures the relational transformations of contemporary Muslim families. This study reconceptualizes qiwāmah in marital relations through an integrative framework that combines gender-responsive Qur’anic exegesis with insights from Muslim family psychology. Using qualitative library research, it synthesizes scholarship on gender hermeneutics, Islamic family law, and contemporary family dynamics to examine how interpretations of male leadership shape relational authority, role negotiation, and family well-being. The findings indicate that qiwāmah is better understood as a relational construct grounded in responsibility and negotiated leadership rather than hierarchical domination. Its reinterpretation aligns with partnership-based roles, dialogical communication, and shared accountability, contributing to perceptions of relational justice and psychological well-being. This study advances a relational framework of qiwāmah that bridges normative Islamic discourse with contemporary family psychology, offering both theoretical contributions and practical implications for counseling, premarital education, and family development in modern Muslim contexts.

Abstract

Martapura is renowned as a religious city imbued with sacred values. The collective awareness of the community regarding the figure of Abah Guru Sekumpul has led the entire urban space to be regarded as sacred, not merely the area surrounding his tomb. illustrates how religion functions to create social order through symbols, rituals, and solidarity. This research applies a qualitative approach through literature review, field observation, and interviews with communities in South Kalimantan. Previous studies mostly examine rituals or religious figures in isolation and rarely explore how sacredness expands into a city-wide collective identity. Research that connects the sacred–profane concept with urban spatial dynamics in Martapura also remains limited. Within the framework of Émile Durkheim's sacred–profane theory, this phenomenon The study reveals that the sacredness of Martapura is shaped by social interactions, Islamic boarding school (pesantren) education, and local government policies that instill religious values in daily life. This sacralization process occurs through the internalization of religious values in social interactions across both younger and older generations, thereby transcending the physical boundaries of the tomb and evolving into a collective identity of the local community. The tomb of Abah Guru Sekumpul serves as a spiritual center that binds the community together through mechanical solidarity grounded in morality and spirituality. This sacredness renders Martapura not only a religious city but also a living social space sustained by its residents' shared consciousness of divine values and Islamic tradition.
