Abstract

This research aims to find out how the panai tradition of Islamic law is reviewed in the marriage traditions of the Bugis tribe of Makassar in Bima. This research uses descriptive qualitative research with a normative sociological approach to field studies. The collection techniques are observation, interviews and documentation. Meanwhile, data analysis processing techniques use reduction, data presentation and conclusions. The results of this research show that first, the Bugis Community in Makassar has two elements that cannot be separated in the marriage process, namely the man not only gives the dowry but also gives panai. If one of the parties commits a violation after the application and cash payment process has been carried out, then one of them will be subject to a fine. Second, judging from Islamic law, marriage is subject to the application of panai as one of the mandatory requirements in traditional marriages of the Bugis tribe which does not violate the pillars and conditions of marriage in Islamic law, because the tradition of giving panai is by the principles of Islamic marriage law because it contains the principle of consent and agreement between the groom and the bride in determining the value of the panai.

Abstract

Discussions on the existence of Prophet Khidr in Islamic tradition have long been debated. Questions about his status as a prophet or saint, whether he is still alive or has passed away, and other issues remain significant among Muslims. These debates have also drawn the interest of Sheikh Mahfudz al-Tarmasi, a prominent Nusantara scholar. In his work, “Ināyat al-Muftaqir bimā Yata`allaq bi Sayyidinā al-Khidr `Alaihi al-Salām.” al-Tarmasi offers detailed and critical insights into Prophet Khidr’s existence. This research examines al-Tarmasi views using Derridean hermeneutics to deconstruct traditional thoughts on Prophet Khidr and encourage new interpretations. Employing a qualitative descriptive literature method, the study aims to gain a deeper understanding of Prophet Khidr’s existence. By applying Derrida’s deconstructive approach, this paper shows how al-Tarmasi addresses the contradictions among the views of Sufis, hadith scholars, and jurists about Prophet Khidr. The findings suggest that al-Tarmasi supports the idea that Prophet Khidr is still alive, thus reinforcing the Sufi perspective in Islamic tradition. This alignment not only highlights al-Tarmasi’s critical stance but also contributes to the broader discourse on the diverse interpretations of Islamic teachings.

Abstract

The background of this study is based on the fact that Madura herbal medicine is an interesting alternative treatment and is believed to be effective, as well as being Madurese local wisdom that has been trusted for generations. Therefore, consumers are faced with the choice of the maslahah and halalness of Madura herbal medicine. This study was conducted as part of the description of answers to these problems by testing independent variables using comparative quantitative methods. The research variable was the consumer perceptions of Madura herbal medicine products that were halal-labeled and those that did not have a halal label. The population was consumers of Madura herbal medicine in Kwanyar and Modung districts, Bangkalan Regency. The sampling of the population in this study used Lemeshow's formulation because the exact number of populations was unknown, and the sample determination used a random sampling approach with an accidental sampling technique. The main data collection used questionnaires and documentation techniques. Following the principles of research methodology, a series of data analysis stages have been carried out through questionnaire instrument testing (validity and reliability tests), data distribution normality tests (as a requirement for the t-test), and the one-sample t-test. From the test results, it is known that the perception of the consumer of the maslahah of the Madura herbal medicine is different. Halal-labeled Madura herbal medicine is perceived to guarantee more maslahah, while nonhalal-labeled Madura herbal medicine is not.

Abstract

This research aims to develop a contextual interpretation model that connects Quranic studies with social sciences to ensure the Quran's relevance in addressing contemporary social challenges. This study employs a qualitative method using a library research model. The findings show that through an interdisciplinary approach, the integration of Quranic teachings with modern social, cultural, political, and economic realities can be achieved. This contextual interpretation approach emphasizes not only a literal understanding but also an analysis of the historical and social contexts surrounding the revelation. The study highlights the importance of the maqashidy approach, which focuses on the objectives of Sharia, as a framework for interpreting the Quran to ensure its teachings remain relevant to issues such as social justice, gender equality, and human rights. Furthermore, the findings indicate that the contextual interpretation model provides a more applicable and dynamic understanding of the Quran, ensuring that its messages remain relevant and can be applied in the lives of Muslims in the modern era.

Abstract

Even though it is still a long-standing debate within Muslims, visiting the wali’s tomb is still a routine ritual. Pilgrimages to the graves of saints in Indonesia and Malaysia present an interesting phenomenon, because both have different principles in applying the law, Malaysia applies sharia law while Indonesia does not. This research seeks to explore the construction of religious piety identity in the tradition of grave pilgrimages, pilgrim behavior and forms of government intervention in the management of saints' graves in Indonesia and Malaysia. This research is a qualitative-phenomenological research, which will reveal the awareness of experiences, social interactions, motives, actions and meanings of the phenomenon of visiting wali’s tomb in Indonesia and Malaysia. The results of this research are; First, the identity of religious piety in the practice of visiting saints emerged as a result of resistance from the religious purification movement which often condemned the practice of visiting wali’s tomb. Second, religious pragmatism can be seen from the motives of pilgrims who use the wali’s tomb as a means of speeding up the fulfillment of their wishes, as well as syncretic behavior by using the burial ground as a means of carrying out all their affairs. In contrast to Malaysia, in Indonesia, the government tends to be responsive to the management of guardian graves by designing them as part of business and tourism. Third, Malaysia uses a sharia law approach to stem deviant behavior from pilgrimage (khurafat), whereas in Indonesia it does not.

Abstract

This article delves into the concept of Islamic science as articulated by Alparslan Acikgenc, a contemporary issue in Islamic epistemology. The study is set against the backdrop of the impact of secular Western science and the dominance of the Western modern science paradigm, rooted in Western philosophy, values, and culture. This context highlights the fact that science is not neutral but inherently value-laden, which calls for a deeper exploration and development of Islamic science. Alparslan Acikgenc, a notable Islamic scholar, provides a definition of Islamic science that is intricately linked to the Islamic worldview, which serves as a fundamental framework for Islamic science. Utilizing descriptive and analytical methods, this study draws several important conclusions. Firstly, Alparslan posits that a scientist's worldview is inseparable from the science they produce, indicating that the underlying beliefs and perspectives of scientists shape their scientific output. Secondly, he argues that a systematic Islamic worldview is necessary for the development of Islamic science, suggesting that without this foundational basis, the science produced will not align with Islamic principles. Thirdly, Alparslan acknowledges that while these definitions are not universally absolute, they hold conventional universality. This means that despite potential differences in opinions among scientists, as long as they share the same worldview, the resulting science will be consistent and coherent. This research underscores the importance of developing Islamic science within its own epistemological framework, thereby challenging the hegemony of Western scientific paradigms and highlighting the significance of cultural and philosophical values in shaping scientific knowledges.
