Abstract

This study is aimed at devising teaching materials for Writing for Academic Purposes (WAP). In context of English for Academic Purposes (EAP), writing is the core materials together woth reading comprehension and critical thinking. The study used Recursive Reflective Design and Development (R2D2) from Willis (1995). The main data if this study were writing materials for academic purposes and the subjects of the study included lecturer, students, and expert in writing. The study revealed two main ifndings. In the Defining Stage, the findings indicated that WAP should include writing for academic purposes that start from paragraph, three paragraph-composition, and 3-5 paragraph essay. The model of the essay is argumentative or persuasive essay as it is applicable for Test of Written English (TWE) for the TOEFL. In the Design and Development Stage, the WAP materials were developed into four components of instructional design: Competency Standard, Basic Competency, Indicators, and Core Materials. In overall outline, the design of WAP is begun with paragraph and its component and the essay for TWE.

Abstract

This paper describes essentials of school based management and its implementation. Theories concerning effective school and leadership are described. To promote quality of education primarily in the secondary school in Indonesia, four problems have been identified: complex organization system at school level, centralized school management, rigid financial system, and ineffective management. Problems on this matter have been the focus of implementation of school based management in Indonesia promoting quality of all aspects of education

Abstract

This study is a correlational study seeing the relationship between work condition and teacher ’s performance in teaching. The study uses 61 respondents in SDs of Kesamben. Product Moment correlation was used to analyze the data. The findings of the study indicated that a significant correlation was obtained. Statistical testing showed that the work condition (X) has positive relationship to the teacher ’s performance (Y) at p=0.005 and df = 16. Relying on the r-value 0.803, Ho of this study was rejected since r-table was lower (0.254). This means work condicition has significant relationship to teacher ’s performance, implying that the better the work atmosphere is the better the teacher performance at school.

Abstract

This article is a review of literature on pre-school persepectives and intelligent quotient. Essentially, intelligent quotient is not a sole measurement of successful or failure of children in the future. In general, intelligent includes: intelligent quotient, emotional quotient, and spiritual intelligent. In the development that follows, Charles Spearman, Thurstone, and Gardner discovered theory on multiple intelligence. The theory identifies that intelligent covers seven dimentions, including: (1) linguistic, (2) music, (3) mathematics logic, (4) visual-spatial, (5) kinestetic-physic, (6) social-interpersonal, and (7) intra-personal. Multiple intelligent is now increasing and provides broader analysis on the interpretation of human behavior and successfulness.

Abstract

In this article, the literal and contextual symbols of Aji Seduluran, a Javanese magical formula were examined. Twelve versions of the -˜mantra ’ -Hindu and Islamic- were analyzed by using discourse analysis. The purpose was to understand the meanings of the symbols, the relations among them, and interpret those symbols according to the Javanese social and philosophical contexts. Based on their scope the symbols may be grouped into: 1) language universal symbols and 2) language culturally bound symbols. The results indicated that the symbols might be classified into three categories: a) spiritual symbols; b) social and moral symbols; 3) symbols of tradition. The symbols were also proven to be universal.

Abstract

The aims of this classroom action research are (1) to find out whether role play can increase students ’ participation in teaching-learning process and (2) to find out whether it can increase students ’ ability in speaking. The data collected in this research were both qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were used to find out the students ’ participation while the quantitative data were used to determine the students ’ ability in speaking. The indicators of the success of this research were (1) that the students are 100% active during the teaching-learning process and (2) that at least 85% of the students get the minimum score of 70. In the first cycle, only 9 students (56%) who take participation, while the percentage of students who get the minimum score of 70 is 4 students (25%). In the second cycle, the percentage of students who take participation is 16 students (100%) and the percentage of students who get the minimum score of 70 is 8 students (50%). In the last cycle, the third cycle, it was gained that the percentage of students who take participation is 100% and the percentage of students who get the minimum score of 70 is 14 students (87.75%). In other words, the target of this research has been achieved at the end of the third cycle.

Abstract

This research was intended to increase the ability of Year II students of SLTPN 17 Palembang to comprehend Indonesian learning material through advance organizer. The method used was a three-cycle classroom action research with 4 phases-”planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The subjects were Class II-9. The results show that the use of advance organizer in the form of text presentation and semantic mapping could increase the ability of the students to comprehend Indonesian learning material.

Abstract

This classroom action research is aimed at seeing causes of socio economy factors and cognitive competence as seen on students ’ achievement. Data are collected using process approach which are based upon questionnaire and observatiom guide. The subjects are the 30 of the IX grade students of SMPN 10 Bandar Lampung. The study runs for three cycles conducted from July to September 2008 involving four teachers as collaborators. The learning method using --KISS ME MY DARLING-- can improve and motivate learning activities and the achievement.

Abstract

This study aims to describe steps to revitalize traditional sports to become sports for all for Dayak Society in Central Kalimantan. The study used qualitative approach implementing phenomenology aspiring perception of athletes of the traditional sports. The study was conducted in July to December 2015 invomving informants from social heads, traditional heads, sportmen, sport teachers, students majoring in sports and public. Data were collected using participatory observation and an indepth interview. Data were analyzed using qualitative procedures: collecting, reduction, classification and conclusion drawing. The study revealed that the best model to internalize and sustain traditional sports to become sport for all for Dayak Traditional Sports in Central Kalimantan includes: conducting festivals, tournaments, and inducing traditional sports in the local curriculum across school levels.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a reference book on the basis of a study on bioecology bryophyte community structure in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. This study used research and development design from Borg and Gall. Two kinds of reference books were developed in this study: biology reference book and ecology of bryophyte reference book. This study revealed that results of validation on book materials, graphics, language and preliminary testing indicated that the book was developed fulfilling standardized criteria of good reference book. There was no revision required to improve the books.
