Abstract

Motivation is among the leading predictors of second language learning. This study investigated the influence of motivation on second language (English) acquisition in primary school students. The study used a qualitative research approach, with case study design as the strategy. The researcher employed purposive sampling to conduct interviews with three primary school English language teachers. Besides, documentary reviews were used to collect suitable data for the study. The findings indicated that motivation is a paramount factor for Second language acquisition (SLA), however, cultivation of motivation to primary school students is a hindrance to most teachers as capacity to use varied experience, student’s efforts, and the learning environment obscuring cultivation of effective motivation. In conclusion, for effective SLA, teachers should develop their skills at fostering motivation to SL learners.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in improving learning outcomes in Civics Education (PKn) for Grade II students at SDS Islam An-Nuriyah. Conducted as Classroom Action Research (CAR) using the Kemmis & McTaggart model, the study was carried out in three stages: pre-cycle, Cycle I, and Cycle II. The data were collected through observation, field notes, tests, and documentation and analyzed descriptively using percentages to measure student progress. The pre-cycle results revealed that only 68.8% of students met the Minimum Completion Criteria (KKM), indicating a need for intervention. After implementing PBL in Cycle I, student learning outcomes improved, with 78.13% of students meeting the KKM. Adjustments were made for Cycle II, including refining teaching techniques and incorporating additional learning media. By the end of Cycle II, 96.88% of students met the KKM, reflecting significant progress in understanding the concepts of deliberation, collaboration, and critical thinking. This study demonstrates that the PBL model fosters active participation, collaborative learning, and critical problem-solving among primary school students, leading to improved academic performance. The findings suggest that PBL can serve as an innovative approach to enhance engagement and achievement in primary education. Future studies are recommended to explore its long-term impact on civic competence and its application across diverse educational settings.

Abstract

In common, EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teachers primarily provide surface-level cultural knowledge to their pupils, who are then expected to use critical thinking to delve into the material. Unfortunately, Universitas Billfath's pre-service teacher education program experienced the same situation. However, candidates for language teachers should possess intercultural competency, which means they should learn about both visible and hidden aspects of culture. To prepare pre-service teachers for their future careers, this study suggests that they be taught profound cultural issues. This will help them to enhance their intercultural communicative competence (ICC). To be specific, this study began with a brief overview of the teaching context and participants. Additionally, a critical analysis of incorporating deep culture to develop ICC was examined. This article also provided an illustration of how the method of teaching deep culture is organized and the reasoning behind it.

Abstract

This research investigated how the rapid shift to online learning platforms in Algerian universities has exposed a critical gap in students' digital dexterity skills. It aimed at exploring students' weaknesses in navigating limitless online resources. Data from a survey administered to 150 students and interviews with 12 university teachers disclosed key areas where students struggle. The findings revealed that in spite of the recent blossoming of online education in Algeria, our students still experience major weaknesses regarding digital dexterity. Also, the findings highlight the need to move towards a pedagogy of abundance to equip students with the skills to access information and to critically evaluate online content. Empowering teachers to integrate digital literacy development within their teaching practices is another crucial action to take so as to bridge the digital dexterity gap and ensure students can thrive in this information-rich online learning environment.
