Abstract

Searching for novel bioactive compounds of microorganisms is increasing. Actinomycetes are a group of bacteria that have potential as a major producer of bioactive compounds. This study aimed to isolate and evaluate the isolates of actinomycetes collected from soil. This research was carried out in three stages, namely the field sampling, isolation of actinomycetes, screening the potential as a producer of bioactive compounds (antimicrobials). A total of 11 isolates of actinomycetes have been isolated in this study. The isolates varied in morphological characteristics. The antibacterial evaluation showed that nine isolates (81.8%) that were able to inhibit either the test organism. Three isolates of ACT-04, ACT-05, ACT-06 and ACT-11 were capable of inhibiting both bacterial targets.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the process of mee bu tujoh bulen as one of the cultures of the Acehnese community that seeks to meet the nutritional needs of pregnant and prevents stunting mothers. Qualitative research with a phenomenological approach is used to study the cultural phenomena of mee bu tujoh bulen from the views and experiences of the people. Respondents in this study were pregnant women, traditional birth attendants, traditional leaders and community leaders. Data processing is done by using data reduction analysis, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification techniques that are presented in narrative form. The results showed that the ingredients presented in mee bu culture consisted of bu kulah (rice wrapped using young banana leaves which had been steamed and then rice wrapped in pyramid shape), side dishes consisting of grilled fish, beef, roasted chicken, cooked duck curries, eggs, and various types of fruit. In addition to those ingredients, the in-laws also prepared a set of betel (completed with ingredients such as areca nut, gambier, lime, cloves and tobacco or called bakong in local language). To sum up, the food brought to mee Bu Tujoh Bulen in cultural ceremony by parents-in-law to pregnant daughter-in-law contains good nutrients to support the fulfillment of nutrition for pregnant women therefore it can prevent and reduce the prevalence of stunting children.

Abstract

The research about animal species of mini zoo of Jantho, Aceh Besar subdistric had been conducted from 21 to 24 January 2010. This research purpose was to investigate animal species in mini zoo of Jantho as biology learning support. Expedition was chosen as a method in this research by direct observation to the location. The result showed that there are 11 species animals consisting of eagle (Accipiter fasciatur), bintarung (Arctictis bintarung), red cat (Felis badia), landak (Hystrix brachura), honey bear (Hylarcstors malayanus), crocodile (Crocodiles porosus), rusa sambar (Cervus unicolor), mawas (Pongo abelli), beruk (Macaca nemestrina), ular sanca (Python reticulates), kukang (Nycticebus caucang). The existence of mini zoo and the animals inside could support biology learning process.

Abstract

Telah dilakukan penelitian tentang penerapan peta konsep sebagai bentuk asesmen formatif dalam meningkatkan hasil belajar mahasiswa pada mata kuliah struktur dan perkembangan tumbuhan. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada semester genap (Juni-Desember 2013) di Program Studi Pendidikan Biologi FKIP Unsyiah dengan tujuan untuk meningkatkan hasil belajar mahasiswa pada mata kuliah struktur dan perkembangan tumbuhan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian eksperimental desain Pretest-posttest Control Group. Jumlah sampel 92 orang mahasiswa yang dikelompokkan dalam dua kelompok secara acak, yaitu kelompok eksperimen (perkuliahan penerapan peta konsep) dan kelompok kontrol (perkuliahan tidak menerapkan peta konsep). Untuk keperluan pengumpulan data dikembangkan sejumlah instrumen yang meliputi peta konsep standar, lembar kerja mahasiswa (LKM), dan perangkat tes (objektif tes). Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui pretest dan. Data peningkatan hasil belajar diperoleh dengan menghitung skor gain ternormalisasi. Untuk mengetahui perbedaan peningkatan hasil belajar antara kelas eksperimen dengan kelas kontrol dilakukan uji beda dua rata-rata skor gain ternormalisasi dengan uji-t. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan peta konsep sebagai bentuk asesmen formatif dapat meningkatkan hasil belajar mahasiwa dalam memahami konsep-konsep stuktur dan perkembangan tumbuhan. Pemberian  scaffolding,  umpan balik yang intensif serta kesempatan self  assessment  yang  diberikan  kepada  mahasiswa  memberikan dampak baik terhadap hasil belajar. Sebaliknya scaffolding, umpan balik dan kesempatan  self  assessment  tidak  diberikan menyebabkan hasil belajar yang kurang optimal.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the impact of lecture model of Genetics towards students’ metacognition skills based on class category, basic academic skill, and types of subjects. This study was conducted at FMIPA Biology department of UM involving students in education class and non-education class for 2 semester. The instruments used in the research were observation sheets of Genetics lecture, metacognition awareness inventory (MAI), and documents of observation sheet. Anakova with Least Significant Difference (LSD) was used to analyse the data. The result showed that the steps in the lecture model of Genetics comprising instucting reading assessment related to lecture material, composing summary of reading material, setting questions and the answers, and having presentation and discussion. Project-based practical work and classic practical work were used in practical work assessment. Evaluation tools was used based on average score of paper and pencil test and alternative assessment. Students’ metacognition skills were not influenced by class factor (education and non-education, basic academic skill [high or low], and types of Genetics subjects [Genetics I and Genetics II).

Abstract

Efforts to find microbes in microbiological examination of material are carried out by means of isolation and identification of microorganisms from the examination material. Isolation was carried out using culture medium. Use a medium for the isolation and identification are closely related with one of Koch's postulates, that is causing the infection must be cultured in the laboratory. Research on the use of expired blood as a medium of isolation and identification of Streptococcus pyogenes has been performed. The aim study is to determine the viability of the colony and the size of the zone of hemolysis of Streptococcus pyogenes in the blood as a medium expired. Materials use is expired blood 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks. Isolation procedures and identification of Streptococcus pyogenes include Gram stain, type of hemolysis, catalase test, and test basitrasin. The results showed the blood expired before four weeks show the number of colonies was almost the same viability with sheep blood agar medium and large blood hemolysis zone are also nearly equal to expire so that the blood of sheep prior to 4 weeks. Thus the blood is exceeded before the 4 weeks can be used as media for the isolation and identification of Streptococcus pyogenes

Abstract

Observation had been conducted for life cycle and morphology of Nematoda Sista Kentang (NSK).The result shows J2 has been found in the day-eight, whereas J3 and J4 was found in the day 20 to 32 after the plant budding. Female J4 has bottle shape and matured has swollen shape. Mature female Nematode has golden color and is called Golden Nematode. Male nematode formed worm. Both male and female nematodes were found in the day-forty after budding. The amount of eggs  are around 300 to 600 depending on cyst size. Cyst has been found in the day-fifty six after budding.

Abstract

The study aims to enhance the quality and quantity of rice flour in drying process, especially when it is compared to the conventional sun drying. The rice flour was dried for 2 hours at different thickness of 1 and 1.5 cm. The temperatures were measured at several points of the dryer’s tray that is consisted of 4 layers, which was counted from the lowest layer as the first level. The samples were weighed in a small box which was put in the near border of the tray (box A) and in the centre of the tray (box B) for each layer. All measurements were done at interval of 15 minutes. Results showed that the temperature for drying the rice flour at depth 1.5 cm was 66 °C, which was higher than that of drying the rice flour at depth 1 cm (60.5 °C). In consequence, the relative humidity in the drying room at depth 1.5 cm was 35 %, which was lower than that of at depth 1 cm (61.8 %). However, the drying rate at depth 1.5 cm was lower than the drying rate at depth 1 cm. In addition, the distance of tray to the heater was also found to cause the low drying rate.

Abstract

This study was aimed to identify the local wisdom of Acehnese people in marine conservation. The study used qualitative research design (Qualitative Research). Methods of collecting data were direct observation on society GampongLampulo,KutaAlam sub-district of Banda Aceh and deep interview. The interviewees were Pawang Laot (Fisherman Chief) and local people.  According to observation and interview that marine conservation management in Port Lampulo has been done since a long time ago by implementing rules created by the chief to maintain marine conservation. Local wisdom in marine conservation consisted of positive and negative behaviours, obeyed rules and ignored rules, and the customary sanctions. Expenditure for weekly sailing was 5-7 millions with montly sailing expenditure was about 30-60 millions. The obstacles faced by fishermen were weather,  climate changes, high price of fossil fuel, and shallowness of fish landing sties. Improvement suggestions for government and local people are infrastructure improvements, decrease in fuel prices, and increase in welfare of fishermen

Abstract

Chitosan as a material of biological origin has recently been used for recovery of metal ions. This research aims to synthesize kitosan resin resulted by the reaction of kitosan with etilendamin. In the present work chitosan was cross-linked with glutardialdehyde and subsequently treated with epichlorohydrine and ethylene diamine. The resins CR-amine was found to contain 22.7% water content,  and were insoluble in organic solvents as well as in mineral and organic acids. The concentration values of the active sites on the resins are reported. The higher concentration of active sites of CR-amine 6.01 mmol/g indicates that the “en” moieties are covalently bonded to the cross-linked resin. Several chemical modification methods were tried in increasing the uptake capacity of cross-linked chitosan bead. Among them, aminated chitosan beads formed through the chemical reaction using ethylenediamine showed the highest uptake capacity for gold ions. Uptake capacity of aminated chitosan beads was increased to about 0.8 mmol Au3+ g-1 dry mass compared to that before modification. The increase of amine groups was confirmed by IR spectrum and measurement of amine concentration and surface condition on aminated chitosan bead was also confirmed by  SEM.
