Abstract

English speaking skills are an essential aspect in the era of globalization. This research investigates the possibility of using the OmeTV app to enhance English-speaking abilities. Using OmeTV's live video chat, students can communicate directly with native speakers about different subjects. This study utilizes a qualitative method with a solitary case study to thoroughly examine students' experience enhancing their English speaking abilities using the OmeTV app. Information was gathered via semi-structured discussions and non-participatory observations and then examined using content analysis to uncover underlying meanings and trends. The findings of this research are anticipated to offer a more comprehensive insight into the factors that impact effective language acquisition in a digital context.

Abstract

This article aims to discover the impact of using Google Assistant in learning English for high school students in Barru, specifically in listening skills classes. To study the phenomenon and obtain in-depth information, a case study exploration was conducted. The student who has used Google Assistant in listening classes were interviewed as part of the data collection process. This study found that the use of Google Assistant routinely and regularly can have a significant impact on students' English language skills. This research also found that the presence of Google Assistant can increase motivation. In addition, the students faced some problems or challenges in using Google Assistant. The challenges are related to the technical issues such as inconsistent internet connection, and the accuracy in understanding voice command, especially when the student speak with a strong local accent. The limitations on the results of this study are due to having only one informant as a reference data.

Abstract

This study delves into the obstacles encountered by English teachers while utilizing YouTube Live Streaming as a platform for teaching. Focusing on educators from the SMP Unismuh Makassar YouTube channel engaged in live English instruction, the research aims to contribute to the understanding of YouTube Live Streaming as a teaching medium for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. The study employs a qualitative approach, using purposive sampling to select two teachers as subjects. Data collection involves observing the difficulties faced by teachers during the live teaching and learning process. The study identifies four main categories of difficulties faced by teachers: communication barriers, time delays, lack of control, and self-confidence issues. The findings suggest that while YouTube can serve as a valuable source of teaching material, its limitations in fostering real-time interaction with students hinder its effectiveness as a primary teaching platform. The researcher concludes that platforms offering virtual face-to-face engagement may be more suitable for online teaching, reserving YouTube primarily as a supplementary learning resource rather than a live teaching tool. Particularly in contexts where face-to-face learning is feasible, leveraging alternative platforms for interactive engagement is recommended.

Abstract

Penelitian ini menggunakan metode tinjauan literatur yang secara komprehensif untuk menganalisis lanskap penelitian pendidikan komparatif di tingkat regional, nasional, dan internasional. Analisis ini mengungkapkan karakteristik yang berbeda pada setiap level yaitu penelitian pada tingkat regional berfokus pada isu lokal yang spesifik, penelitian pada tingkat nasional menitikberatkan pada prioritas dan kebijakan negara, serta penelitian internasional mengkaji perbandingan sistem dan tren global. Temuan utama menunjukkan interkoneksi dan sifat saling melengkapi di antara ketiga level penelitian, meskipun terdapat perbedaan dalam fokus dan metodologi. Kebaruan penelitian ini terletak pada sintesis unik yang menunjukkan bagaimana temuan dari satu level menginformasi level lainnya. Implikasi penelitian ini adalah memberikan pemahaman terintegrasi bagi pemangku kepentingan, yang relevan untuk pengembangan kebijakan dan peningkatan praktik pendidikan di berbagai tingkatan.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kesalahan siswa dalam menyelesaikan soal matematika berdasarkan tahapan Kastolan serta hubungannya dengan tingkat kecemasan matematika. Pendekatan yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif, dengan subjek penelitian siswa kelas VIII di salah satu SMP di Kabupaten Barru. Data dikumpulkan melalui tes pemecahan masalah matematika, angket kecemasan matematika, dan wawancara semi-terstruktur. Analisis data dilakukan melalui tahapan reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan dengan menggunakan teknik triangulasi sumber dan metode untuk menjamin keabsahan data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat hubungan antara tingkat kecemasan matematika dan jenis kesalahan yang dilakukan siswa. Siswa dengan tingkat kecemasan tinggi cenderung melakukan kesalahan konseptual, siswa dengan kecemasan sedang lebih banyak melakukan kesalahan prosedural, sedangkan siswa dengan kecemasan rendah cenderung melakukan kesalahan teknikal. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa kecemasan belajar berpengaruh terhadap cara siswa memahami dan memproses soal matematika. Implikasi penelitian ini menunjukkan pentingnya strategi pembelajaran yang memperhatikan aspek afektif, terutama pengelolaan kecemasan matematika, melalui pendekatan pembelajaran yang mendukung kenyamanan dan kepercayaan diri siswa.

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of using the VOA Learning English website as a digital learning tool to enhance the English listening proficiency of X-year students at SMK Negeri 1 Barru. By comparing the performance of students who used the VOA Learning English website with those who rely on traditional methods, A quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test was employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the VOA Learning English website in enhancing the English listening skills of X-year students at SMK Negeri 1 Barru. The study demonstrated that the use of VOA Learning English significantly enhanced students'' listening skills. The experimental group's post-test scores increased from an average of 54.20 to 86.70, while the control group's scores showed a less significant improvement. The significant improvement observed in the experimental group, as compared to the control group, highlights the potential of digital learning tools in transforming language education.

Abstract

This study aims to explore students’ perceptions of using YouTube as a learning tool to enhance their English-speaking skills at SMKN 1 Barru. Employing a qualitative case study design, the research involved ten vocational students selected purposively from the eleventh grade. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations, focusing on students’ experiences, challenges, and perceived benefits when using YouTube in English learning. The data were analyzed using a thematic analysis approach, supported by triangulation to ensure validity and credibility. The findings reveal that students perceive YouTube as a compelling, engaging, and accessible platform for improving speaking skills. The use of authentic videos helps learners enrich vocabulary, improve pronunciation, and build speaking confidence through imitation and exposure to native-like models. Moreover, YouTube fosters self-directed learning and motivation by allowing students to control their pace and learning environment. However, several challenges were also noted, such as distraction and limited internet access. The study highlights the pedagogical potential of YouTube in promoting interactive and autonomous learning, particularly in vocational education contexts where communicative competence is essential.

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of using inspiring novels as instructional media to enhance students’ reading comprehension. A pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test was employed, involving 20 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through reading comprehension tests administered before and after the treatment. The intervention consisted of seven sessions in which students engaged with inspiring novels through group reading and comprehension activities. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students’ reading performance. The mean score increased from 65.5 (SD = 10.50) in the pre-test to 78.5 (SD = 7.45) in the post-test. A paired-samples t-test confirmed that the improvement was statistically significant (t = 10.23, p < .05). Beyond score gains, classroom observations indicated that students were more motivated, demonstrated richer vocabulary acquisition, and actively engaged with the reading materials. These results suggest that inspiring novels are an effective medium for improving reading comprehension in EFL contexts. By combining narrative engagement with structured comprehension tasks, this approach fosters both academic achievement and learner motivation.

Abstract

The development of technology has enabled language teachers to improve their learning objectives, media and systems. This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of the ELSA Speak Application to enhance EFL students’ pronunciation fluency and students' perspectives towards the use of the ELSA Speak App as mobile-assisted language learning at SMKS Kesehatan Babussalam Boddie, Pangkep. The research involved eight tenth-grade students in one experimental group. It employed pretests, a posttest, and a questionnaire for data collection. Both descriptive and inferential statistics methods were used to analyze the data. The analysis using Descriptive Statistics and the Paired Samples t-test revealed a significant improvement in students' pronunciation proficiency after the treatment. The mean score difference of -36.25 indicated a substantial increase in post-treatment scores, with a p-value of 0.000 confirming the results were statistically significant. The confidence interval of -39.96 to -32.54 further supports the effectiveness of the intervention. The study provided several recommendations for both teachers and learners to integrate mobile applications in the language classroom, especially ELSA Speak to improve English speaking skills in terms of pronunciation in the EFL context.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of animated videos in improving students’ English listening comprehension at Madrasah Aliyah (MA) Muhammadiyah Padaelo. The research was conducted using a quantitative pre-experimental design involving 14 second-grade students during the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test listening assessments and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed a substantial increase in students’ average score—from 49.35% on the pre-test to 85% on the post-test—indicating significant improvement in listening comprehension after the use of animated videos. The results suggest that animated videos provide dual cognitive and affective benefits: they enhance understanding through visual and auditory integration and increase motivation by creating engaging, contextual learning experiences. These findings are consistent with Mayer’s Multimedia Learning Theory and Krashen’s Affective Filter Hypothesis, which highlight how well-designed multimedia can support both comprehension and confidence. The study concludes that animated videos are an effective supplementary medium for improving English listening skills among EFL learners.
