Abstract

The practice of mokel eating or drinking secretly during the fasting hours of Ramadan represents a unique socio-religious phenomenon within Indonesian Muslim communities, yet it has rarely been examined in academic literature beyond moral or normative perspectives. Most existing studies frame the practice merely as a violation of religious obligations, overlooking the complex social dynamics that shape religious behavior in communal contexts. This study aims to analyze mokel practices through the lens of performative piety and hidden deviance to better understand the tension between publicly displayed religiosity and privately concealed religious transgression during Ramadan. The research addresses the following questions: (1) how do individuals who engage in mokel negotiate their religious identity within a community that strongly upholds the norms of Ramadan fasting? and (2) what socio-religious factors contribute to the emergence and persistence of mokel practices in Muslim society? This study employs a qualitative research design using a socio-religious approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation within selected Muslim communities where mokel practices are socially recognized. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns of religious behavior, social expectations, and individual rationalization. The findings reveal that mokel practices are not simply acts of individual religious deviance but reflect a complex negotiation between social pressure to demonstrate public piety and personal limitations in fulfilling religious obligations. Individuals who engage in mokel often maintain outward participation in religious rituals to preserve social belonging while privately managing their religious shortcomings. This dynamic illustrates the coexistence of performative piety and hidden deviance within communal religious life, highlighting the gap between normative religious ideals and lived religious practices. The study contributes to broader discussions in the sociology of religion by offering a new perspective on hidden religious behavior in Muslim societies during Ramadan

Abstract

This study examines Fakhr Al-Din Al-Razi's interpretation of the process of plant growth and development from the perspective of scientific interpretation, focusing on the verses of QS. Al-An‘am: 95 and 99, Al-Hajj: 5, Ar-Raḥman: 6, and Al-Ḥijr: 22. The purpose of this study is to analyze how al-Razi explains the process of plant growth in Tafsir Mafatiḥ Al-Ghaib and to identify the characteristics of scientific interpretation he uses. This study aims to analyze how Fakhr Al-Din Al-Razi interprets the process of plant growth and development in Tafsir Mafatiḥ Al-Ghaib and to identify the characteristics of scientific interpretation he applies. This study uses qualitative research in the form of library research using books and other literature where Tafsir Mafatiḥ Al-Ghaib is the main data source. The characteristics of Fakhr Al-Din Al-Razi's scientific interpretation combine science with theology through the taḥlili method, examining verses from linguistic, legal, theological, and philosophical aspects. He interpreted the growth and development of plants as evidence of the order of Allah SWT's creation, where the process occurs according to the law of cause and effect established by Him. Elements such as water, wind, and soil play an important role in growth, while the final result, fruit, reflects His greatness. His rational and philosophical approach remains careful not to get caught up in changeable scientific interpretations, emphasizing that the Qur'an has a broader meaning than just science

Abstract

This paper discusses the Sufi approach to prayer (ṣalah) as an effort to understand Islamic worship not merely from its outward legal dimension (fiqh), but also from its inner and spiritual aspects. This study employs a qualitative method through library research, drawing upon classical and contemporary books, academic journals, and relevant online sources. The discussion focuses on the definition of Sufism and prayer, the characteristics of the Sufi approach, the function of Sufism in religious life, and the perspectives of prominent Sufi figures—particularly Imam al-Ghazali and Ibn ‘Aṭa’illah al-Sakandari—regarding prayer. The findings indicate that Sufism views prayer as a means of purifying the soul, a medium for intimate supplication, and a path toward spiritual closeness to Allah. The Sufi approach emphasizes the presence of the heart, understanding the meanings of the recitations, and internalizing the spiritual values of prayer. Therefore, the integration of sharia and Sufism is essential to realizing prayer that is not only legally valid but also spiritually meaningful.

Abstract

The concept of balance between worldly life and the hereafter is one of the fundamental principles in Islamic teachings. The Qur’an does not advocate asceticism that negates worldly life, nor does it justify a purely worldly orientation that neglects the hereafter. One of the verses that explicitly emphasizes this principle is QS. Al-Qasas verse 77, which instructs human beings to seek the happiness of the hereafter without forgetting their share of worldly life, as well as to uphold goodness and avoid corruption. This verse serves as a normative foundation for building a balanced, harmonious life oriented toward the well-being of both this world and the hereafter. This study aims to examine the interpretation of QS. Al-Qasas verse 77 according to Buya Hamka in Tafsir Al-Azhar and M. Quraish Shihab in Tafsir Al-Misbah, as well as to analyze the similarities and differences between their perspectives regarding the concept of balance between worldly life and the hereafter. The research method employed is library research, using a tahlili (analytical) tafsir approach. The data are analyzed through a descriptive-comparative technique by comparing the interpretations of the two exegetes based on their social contexts, interpretative styles, and emphases on the meanings of the verse. The results of this study indicate that both Buya Hamka and M. Quraish Shihab agree that QS. Al-Qasas verse 77 emphasizes the importance of balance between spiritual orientation toward the hereafter and worldly activities. Buya Hamka highlights moral and social aspects, as well as human responsibility as Allah’s vicegerent (khalifah) on earth, by relating the verse to social realities and ethical values. Meanwhile, M. Quraish Shihab places greater emphasis on the functional and proportional balance between worldly life and the hereafter through a contextual and analytical approach. The differences between the two lie in their interpretative styles and emphases; however, both concur that balance between worldly life and the hereafter is the key to human well-being, both physically and spiritually.

Abstract

Intercultural communication plays an important role in the adaptation process of new students in Islamic boarding schools. Differences in language, culture, customs, and communication styles often become obstacles for students from different regions. This study aims to analyze the adaptation process of new mahasantri from Madura in the pesantren environment through the perspective of intercultural communication, identify communication barriers, and describe adaptation strategies carried out by mahasantri. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that intercultural communication helps mahasantri build social relationships, exchange experiences, and understand cultural differences among students from various regions. The adaptation process is carried out through active interaction, sharing experiences, and mutual understanding among mahasantri. The main communication barriers experienced by mahasantri are shame, lack of confidence in starting conversations, language differences, and different communication styles. However, openness, tolerance, and intensive interaction are able to support successful adaptation in pesantren life. This study concludes that intercultural communication has an important role in creating harmonious social relationships and supporting the adaptation of new mahasantri in multicultural pesantren environments.
