Abstract

A successful process of English teaching and learning has been considered as an ultimately major goal in Indonesian high-schools, including in integrated Islamic high-schools known with doubled-curriculum  schools. To mention further,  this agenda  tightens students’ academic activities as other subjects also bring about numerous high standard motives and goals. This study was conducted to analyze the effect of this compact curricular agenda towards the process of English Teaching and learning from the teacher’s perspectives. The curricular agenda at SMP IT Az-Zahra Takengon was SWOT-analyzed regarding its effect to the process of English teaching and learning at the school. In significance, this study is expected to broaden the knowledge of stakeholders of high-school curriculum management in developing the curricular academic activities in more deliberately careful ways in the purpose of reaching the goal protocols. The method used in this study was mainly qualitative approach through interviews which solely sheds light on the description of the academic agenda in the congruence of English teaching and learning process through interviews with the English teacher at the school. The result showed that the strength is that it has risen the students’ motivation whether in learning English or other subjects since the school provides various curricular activities, instead of monotonous ones, that loosen the students’ boredom and tension. The weakness is that full academic agenda leads to the condition where lots of English lessons are left untaught from which we eventually see that it are a management failure. The opportunity from the agenda is that the students are exposed to multi-disciplinary material abundance. Finally, the thread is that realizing the students with low motivation in English would seemingly remove English into their blacklists as a result of exhaustion.

Abstract

Munshi Abdullah, or  Abdullah Bin Abdul Kadir, is considered by many scholars as an early figure of modern Malay laureate  because of his against the  traditional norms writings. His two works; Kisah Pelayaran Abdullah ( The Voyage of Abdullah) ,1838 and Hikayat Abdullah ( Abdullah’s life story) , 1849,  are among his  important and meaningful chronicle memoirs in Malay literature. This paper laments Abdullah’s  true, new and different ideas which serve as a dividing line  between him and the writers before and during his time. Abdullah’s writings contain sharp criticism which addressed to the feudal and Malay community involving leadership, language and cultural practices. Such critics  arose from his education background and his social interaction with the British. It gave him new thoughts and perspectives in his writings, based on his observations and experiences which  were not rigid, comparing to  most of the conventional writings at that time, that incorporated elements of myth, fairy tales and legends. Besides, Abdullah  is also well-known for translating works into Malay, including Christian epistles for missionaries.  Some condemn Abdullah’s work  as a sign of his Anglophile persuasions, but at one level Abdullah’s criticism is inextricably related to his understanding of the weaknesses of his people. Besides his remarkable ideas, the most undeniable contribution of Abdullah is the printing work. His writings paved the way for a significant phase in the development of both Malay language and printing. He boosted the production of Malay works through his writings which previously were handwritten in manuscript forms. It was he who introduced the printing and publication of Malay books in the early  19th century and  brought great changes in the world of Malay literature. His writings brought the  analysis of Malay world which is very comprehensive and encompassing and finally become a great subject in these modern days. Keywords:Abdullah, Malay, critic, modern.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the ability of students in understanding of graph based on interpersonal and logical mathematical intelligence. The approach used in this research was mixed methods by using the stepwise mixed model especially sequence explanatory model. The subjects were six students on grade XI of MAN 1 Banda Aceh selected based on students who have interpersonal and logical mathematical intelligence. The results showed that student’s graphics ability with high interpersonal intelligence was in fair criteria, the student was able to translate the graph, but not yet able to interpret and extrapolate the graph. A student with medium interpersonal intelligence had good criteria in understanding the graph when viewed from the ability to translate and interpret the graph, but still made mistakes in interpreting the graph. The ability to understand graphics of low interpersonal students was in good criteria that was shown by smoothly translating graphs, being able to interpret graphs, and being able to extrapolate graphics appropriately. Student’s understanding of graphs of high mathematical logical intelligence was at excellent criteria that were showed by being able to translate graphs, being able to interpret and extrapolate graphs. The ability of understanding graphics in students with medium mathematical logical intelligence was having good criteria means that students are fluent in translating the graph but still lacking in interpreting and extrapolating the graph. Student understanding of graph with low mathematical logical intelligence had inadequate criteria, meaning that student was only able to translate graphs on some translational indicators. Keywords: interpersonal intelligence, logical mathematical intelligence, mathematical understanding.
