Abstract

Indonesian students’ achievementin PISA was unsatisfactory. This shows that the problem-solving ability of Indonesian students is still not as expected. This research aims to describe the ability of Indonesian students and the causes of difficulties in solving PISA problems. The study involved 26 students. The data obtained through test and interview. The test was given to students in grade VIII-3 at SMPN 6 Banda Aceh. The interview was conducted with 5 students selected based on criteria, i.e. one student on good ability, one student on fair to good, one student on poor, and two students on very poor ability. The results showed that the students' ability in solving PISA problems was low which is at Level 2 of the 6 levels by The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). In addition, the results also indicated that the causes of the difficulties were because the students unfamiliar to answer the questions that require reasoning. Students were also difficult in understanding about the word problems. Another factor was caused by the lack of students’ ability of mathematical concepts.  Keywords:PISA, level of students’ ability, causes of difficulties.

The data gathered via interview, observation, and questionnaire was analysed through qualitative approach. The result shows that the factors influencing perception formation of people of Aceh Tamiang towards Islamic dress in Article 13 of Qanun No. 11 of 2002 consist of external and internal ones. The external factors are: (1) the lack of information received by people about the criteria of Islamic dress in Article 13 of Qanun No. 11 of 2002, (2) the limited script of Article 13 of Qanun No. 11 of 2002 received by the people, and (3) the less appropriate and effective socialising system done by the government of Aceh, and the small number of the people who admittedly have ever read the content of Article 13 of Qanun No. 11 of 2002. The internal factors are: (1) the people’s lack of understanding towards Islamic dress stated in Article 13 of Qanun No. 11 of 2002, (2) the presumption that Arabic culture (Arabism) as Islamic teachings particularly in dress code, and (3) the desire to show up-to-date fashion style while not deserting Islamic dress code. Therefore, there is unity between Islamic values and local culture with globalisation/foreign culture. Keywords: internal factors, external factors, Islamic dress code, article 13 of Qanun No 11 of 2002.

Abstract

This study is following up previous one about the development of Introduction to Elementary Mathematics course materials using character education approach; which had resulted in a material about mathematical logic using character education approach which is valid, practical,  and  effective.    The  subjects are  freshmen of  the  Department of Mathematics Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Educational Sciences, Nusantara Islamic University, Bandung, Indonesia.  This study employed qualitative action research design with practical action research type.  The action research was carried out in five classroom sessions where every session was divided into four practical action research steps as follows: identifying focus area, collecting the data, analyzing and interpreting data, and developing an action plan. All classroom sessions are carried out by referring to the main materials that were previously developed; and they all implemented contextual approach based on character education stages: moral knowing, moral feeling, and moral actions. This study used the following instruments to gather the data: observation over students and instructors’ activities, questionnaires, and interview guidelines. This study has successfully found that both students’ character development and instructor’s teaching profiles dynamically improve when the instruction session implement materials that integrated character components into mathematical logic materials.

Abstract

There is a public assumption that Indonesian people, particularly Acehnese, do not utilize personal space during interactions. This study investigated the proximity levels used by Acehnese people when communicating with other people. The observation approach was used to collect data. The participants involved in this study were people who were in natural interaction in public places such as park, playground, market, mosque, restaurant, sports field, and beach. The data were pictured and kept anonymous in regards of ethical codes maintained in research. The results show that there are three conditions obtained from this study. First, mostly, Acehnese people use intimate level of proximity, which is less than 0.46 meter eventhough when they are interacting with strangers. However, this condition only applies if the interactions taking place is male-male interactions or female-female interactions. Second, in a condition where the stranger interaction is male-female, the proximity employed by the people is in the level of personal—which is 1.2 meter.  Lastly, men maintained farther distance compared to women. In conclusion, the farthest proximity level that Acehnese applied was social level (1.2 m to 3.7 m); yet, the main influencing factor is genders.

Abstract

The concept of fraction is a fundamental mathematics subject that is repeatedly reported to be difficult for students to learn and for teachers to teach. Various articles on strategies to teach fractions have been presented, but students’ proficiency in dealing with fractions has not improved in general. This article describes a qualitative study conducted to assess students’ performance in solving a set of problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions. The students’ performances were analyzed according to the standard competence as inscribed in the Indonesian Curriculum Version Year 2013 for fifth grade students which was: capable of solving problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions with different denominators. A set of test was administered to twenty fifth-grade students at a primary school in Aceh, Indonesia. Result showed that the students’ understanding of addition and subtraction of fractions was poor: majority of the students knew the rule of addition and subtraction of fractions but only 45% executed the computation correctly, 25% students appeared to be struggling in finding the least common denominator when executing operations with fractions, none of the students reduced their fractions to lowest terms, and understanding word problems also proved to be a challenge to many of the students. This finding necessitates the importance of meaningful learning. Students need to experience fractions in a familiar context in order to be able to grasp conceptual and procedural understanding of fractions. Keywords:student performance, addition and subtraction of fractions.
