Abstract

Particularly after significant strikes in Hollywood in 2023 and 2024, the film and television sectors are currently facing significant challenges. This paper aims to explore how variations in production incentives affect the competitiveness of the film and television sector in the US and Canada. Through a qualitative approach and literature analysis, the study revealed that more competitive incentive policies in Canada could attract more film investment than states in the United States with less appealing regulations. Additionally, the study illustrates how the strikes have impacted investment decisions across sectors and disrupted production, thereby creating uncertainty that hampers the growth of the film and television industries. This study advocates for policy changes to promote industry sustainability by emphasizing the importance of adaptive incentive strategies that respond to evolving global market dynamics. The findings should provide lawmakers and industry stakeholders with valuable insights and recommendations for enhancing competitiveness in the film and television sectors.

Abstract

Dulu tugasnya cuma muter backing track. Sekarang harus ngurus 5 hal sekaligus: playback backing track, sinkron metronom, sinkron timecode, sinkron visual, dan sinkron lampu. Semua harus jalan barengan.Di lapangan, kontroler berbasis MIDI masih menjadi andalan industri. Alasannya: MIDI jago mengontrol parameter DAW. Tapi MIDI punya kelemahan. Metode risetnya Practice-Based Research. Tahapannya lengkap: analisis kebutuhan, rancang sistem, bikin prototipe, implementasi, uji fungsional, sampai evaluasi profesional.

Abstract

The development of contemporary cinema has positioned sound design not merely as a supporting element of visual storytelling but as an independent narrative structure capable of shaping emotional and psychological experiences. However, most commercial films still rely heavily on non-diegetic musical scoring and synthetic cinematic effects as the primary drivers of audience emotion. This reliance has limited the exploration of organic sound as an autonomous emotional narrative medium. The study analyses the use of silent sound design, based on organic and diegetic sound, as the main medium for generating emotional ambience, psychological immersion and cinematic storytelling in short film production. This practice-based, qualitative study blends literature reviews, film textual analysis, artistic experimentation and reflective creative practice. In this paper I examine recent examples of minimalist sound design and the development of psychological soundscapes in Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Chime (2024) and Cloud (2024), and Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza’s Warfare (2025). Artistic exploration methodology includes: manipulation of room tone, layering of ambience, processing of resonance, distortion of frequencies, application of spatial reverb, and construction of subconscious sound with Avid Pro Tools and Ableton Live 11. The findings show that organic sound can serve as the main emotional architecture of cinematic storytelling without the need of musical composition. Manipulated ambience, juxtaposition of silence and diegetic sound layering efficiently achieve psychological tension, alienation and sensory immersion. In addition, silent sound design has great promise as an alternative cinematic way to depict trauma, fear and emotional subjectivity through immersive aural experiences. Conceptually, this research contributes to contemporary sound studies by situating organic sound as a psychological narrative medium rather than as a simple realistic audiovisual accompaniment.
